Which PS2 Games do you recommend?
Which PS2 Games do you recommend?
Next year (possibly boxing day sales if I'm lucky) I intend to buy a PS2. The games I want all seem to be "Greatest Hits" lately, so I've been giving it some serious thought.
I was wondering which PS2 (DB-related) games you guys suggest, and if you could tell me which ones are Greates Hits. Unless I'm mistaken, all three Budokai Games are Greatest Hits, so do you recommend I pick all three or just one (please mention which one)?
The only "new," by which I mean fully-priced, games I intend on getting are X-Men Legends 2 and the non-Greatest Hits DBZ games you recommend that I get.

As for the Budokai games, if you own some DVDs then you probably won't enjoy Budokai 1 at all. Budokai 2 and 3 have two different fighting engines, but Budokai 2's story mode is really boring. Tenkaichi, well a lot of people have already posted it's flaws, it's far too short (or long), hard at first then gets so easy it's boring, ect.
Budokai 3 also has password mode so that is probably the one you should buy, and if the U.S. is lucky, Atari will have included the extras from DBZ3. Tenkaichi/Sparking! is pretty fun and covers more of the story than any DBZ game before it, so get it if you want.
As of 2006, all three Budokai games should be Greatest Hits.

I'm the only person who enjoyed Dragon World ;_;. Budokai 2 is the one Dragon Ball game I've played the most ever, Budokai 1 I would only recommend if you're a serious collector and want to see scenes from the anime rendered out in 3D, otherwise go with the sequel, which is everything Budokai 1 is and more. The three games you'll want in total are Budokai 2, Budokai 3 (Greatest Hits) and Budokai Tenkaichi.
Why buy one next year? Aren't PS2s cheap enough now?

I'd recomend just the three Budokai titles. 1 and 3 more-so than 2, and 2 way more-so than BT, unless you're collecting like me. BT's just not got the substance for me to recommend it. B1's got the superior story telling (excellent cutscenes) and B3's got the superior gameplay.

-Budokai 1 (possibly the greatest DBZ game ever created)
-Budokai 2 (more characters than 1, SSJ3!)
-Budokai 3 (Like Budokai 1, very very good game, though I hate the story mode.)
-Sagas (Just kidding!
)
Don't know about Sparking! yet, since I don't own it.

Skipping the long paragraphs...
Tenkaichi Budokai and/or Budokai 3.
To me those are the ones I would buy if I didn't have them.
If it's Budokai 3 you should buy the new greatest hits one(or Special Edition if you're in Europe). It features 3 more characters and Japanaese voices, the pictures move on story mode, and was it someone here who said the ki attacks look slightly upgraded and better as well?
Anyway, those two.

Gah! These recommendations are all over the board!
The reason I haven't gotten a PS2 yet is because the price has plateaud at $179.99. That's not that cheap since they used to only be $20 more. I could get a Gamecube, since they use free games to avoid going under the $149.99 mark, but then my PS1 games won't be cross-compatible and I won't be able to take advantage of the Greatist Hits games I want. As a result, I'm waiting for boxing day sales to lessen the price, or until next year when I'll know how stable my budget will be. Remember: $179.99 isn't cheap, THEN add a second controler and $60 per game. That makes about $300 (after taxes) just to play one game. What changed my mind was that Greatest Hits would only be $19.99, I could trade-in my PS1 console to lower the price, and that the PS2 is cross-compatible.
So the general concensus I'm getting is buy Budokai 2+3 since they're both Greatest Hits, and wait for Tenkaichi Budokai to become a Gratest Hits. That works for me. With X-Men Legends 1+2, those 3 games, 2 remotes, and trading-in of PS1, that gets me everything I want for only $320.

I suggest:
"Greatest Hits" Budokai 3: Phenominal story mode, excellent gameplay, Japanese VAs as an unlockable option, only DB game you'll find Uub and Xi Xing Long, and fantastic replayable elements.
Budokai 1: Straight up, buy for the jaw-dropping cut-scenes in the story-mode, as well as the aspect that it's the first DBZ Ps2 game.
Sagas: Buy for the decently fun story-mode and the aspect that you can actually play out the story with a friend in 2-player co-op.

Yeah, if you still want PS2's price to drop some more, waiting for Boxing Day isn't so bad. I mean, it's less than a month away, so that's not too long to wait. They might have it on sale then.
I remember, I got a brand new Budokai 3 last Boxing Day and only payed $35 Canadian (when it was still regularly at the full price of around $60). So you never know, you might get a good price if you wait a little more.
I actually saw PS2 on sale right now, I think it was around $160 or less. I don't remember exactly. Might've been in Walmart, Zellers, or Toys R Us. But then again, I live in a different place than you (though it's still Canada
), so I don't know if it's on sale where you live too.

Gah. I forgot about the memory card. Please tell me those are $10 at most.
I'm getting desperate now: next semester's university fees cost $1300. I have less than $3500 to last me until I can get a new job.
I'm strongly hoping I can find a store where a dork sold his high-quality PS2 et al to get credit on an X-box 360. Then I can buy it used AND boxing day priced!
Mmmmm...75% off...

Budoukai 3 is the one you MUST own, and you should most definately buy the new "Greatest Hits" edition. This is the best Dragonball game I've ever played, and I've played many. It's also an inspired, quick, challenging fighter (against a skilled opponent - the CPU has some silly fighting patterns).
The second game is a tough one. It's definately between Budoukai Tenkaichi, because of its wonderfully unique take on Dragonball in a videogame format, or Sagas, because of its comically flawed but fun co-op gameplay. I would say Tenkaichi, as it's something totally new and interesting, but you could probably find Sagas somewhere for a really low price if you looked hard enough.

I don't remember how much Memory Cards are, but they're a hell of a lot more than $10.
Whatever you buy, I suggest looking in Zellers, Toys R Us, and Walmart.
I think Zellers was the one that had both the system and memory cards on sale, but I'm not sure. They also might have some harder to find games, and still brand new.
Toys R Us sometimes give you good extras. Occasionally, they may give you like "buy one Greatest Hits, get the second one free", or "buy the system and get a free extra controller". Stuff like that. In fact, I think the 2 for 1 Greatest Hits is on right now, where I live anyway. May be rare stuff here too.
And Walmart might have good stuff too. I bought from there recently, and they had a bunch of these overstocked games or something, for pretty cheap. And, while you probably don't have to concern yourself with this for the DBZ games, I've seen some rare games at Walmart, that I wasn't able to find elsewhere. Like Suikoden II and Dead or Alive 1 (this was a long time ago, but still).
And, all 3 often have Greatest Hits for around $20-$25, instead of the usual $30. People don't often think of these places as a source for games, and instead go to EB. This might also explain why there are rare games at them. Not as many people go to them, so they get all these games in, and no one buys them. Of course, EB has a much larger selection, and used stuff, but you'd be surprised what you can find at the 3 places I mentioned above.

The reason I never go to Toys R Us, Zellers and Wallmart for video games is because they suck where I live. Toys R Us has been borderline chapter 11 for a while now (forty million baby strollers does not a toy-store make!), whereas Zellers is always hit or miss depending on the precise store (miss in my area). Walmart... I have no fricking idea what happened to the one near me. ALWAYS chaging their layout so they never have time to have a proper electronics and toy section. Bizzare.
Also costing all three stores money, so they don't charge the prices you mention. Toys R Us almost got bought out by KB Toys! KB TOYS ISN'T EVEN IN QUEBEC!
Least a Best Buy opened up at my mall. I've got to go check that out.
As for boxing day, it's not some wacky Canadian or European thing.
It's the day after Christmas where eeeeeverything is discounted so that they can get rid of their box-loads of extra, unsold holiday inventory. If your location doesn't have boxing day sales, it most likely has "holiday" sales that go past Christmas day.
How about Gamecube games? Do you recommend I get a gamecube + games since it's cheaper?

If you want advice don't buy Saga's.
I haven't even played it, but from what I have seen it is a repetitive load of crap. The fight's look so basic and un-DBZ, the same move is done over and over again to win the battle, just look at how boring the fights are on IGN or something.
It's definately a Fanboy game, they see it, see it has Goku, Vegeta and Gohan and automatically think it's gold dust, if you are a better gamer and know how game companies scam people, you'll find out quite quickly after purchasing Saga's that you have been conned.
Now I'm waiting for someone who actually has the game to tell me I'm wrong and possibly convince Dayspring to buy the game because they wasted their money on it...unless you have it for a collector's purpose.
