Origin of "changeling" name

Post by VegettoEX » Thu Dec 15, 2005 9:05 pm

Heyas.

Does anyone have any evidence that would lead to where (and when?) the term "Changeling" first came into use as a "name" for Freeza's race? Was this a "translation" from another country's book (like the French daizenshuu), something someone like Curtis Hoffman wrote and people adopted as fact, or simply just... "one of those things"...?

Anything anyone's got would be great. Please try to keep it on-topic at all times, and not random outta-left-field speculation.

Last time I checked it was just a fan term that someone came up with. Things like that tend to spread around when a series is very popular in many countries with kids that can create websites in seconds and all of the information is stolen from other sites so you never know whats true.

I thought I heard Freeza called a "changling" in the dub - and Dayspring said the French Daizenshuu listed him as something similar.

I've read a lot of fanfics. (I know. >.>) and a few have references to Freeza's race as the 'Aesuu-jin'. I have no idea if that is correct, but Ice-jin does sound right.

One might also assume the term 'Changeling' was derived from the fact that he was able to transform at least four times. If it is a dub term, I suppose it seemed the best thing to fit in at the time of translation.

Hope this helps. :P

Hey guys:

I know what it means, and why people would have come up with that name. But that doesn't help me figure out where it originally came from :). The closest thing seems to be the French daizenshuu comment, which I'd love more information on! Thanks!

From what I have read, the French Daizenshuu were translations of the original Japanese ones. If it wasn't in those then, chances are, it probably isn't in the French version either. I hope that helps a little.

Here's the link where I got that information. It's the only site I've found that even mentions them.

Er...no I didn't. :P

For a lot of bios in the daizenshuu, it lists what race the person in question is a member of. For Freeza, it had "Extra-terrestre polymorphique" which literally translates to "polymorphic extraterrestrial". I think the daizenshuu used a good term since that's pretty much EXACTLY what he is.

I'm pretty sure "changeling," if memory serves correctly, was a fan-term created by Mr.E back from the EARLY PN days (I think it was just him and SkullMac running it back then). What I do remember is that it was a big site from back then which started it, even clearly stating in their FAQ that it was simply a fan-term they used from time to time that was NOT to be taken as canon (the question was more or less "Why do you refer to Freeza as a Changeling all the time but have his bio listed as 'unknown species'?"). We know from experience, however, that nobody reads FAQs. :P
