I was wondering why the French randomly changed their names to "Zabon" and "Doria"...

Not a correct variant, I don't think.

What has 800 got to do with that character anyway?
On the internet, nothing ever goes away.
Well that's interesting.

I assume that "Dr. Raichi" is something similar?
Where's the beef?

Not similar to any Chinese fables, but rather to Chinese fruit.

Thanks a bunch! Here's a few more names/terms I can't figure out:

Yardrat, Metamour (those fusion people), and the potara earrings.

No need to bump; 9 days isn't a necro. :)

Yardrat I'm not too sure about, but Metamour is probably short for "Metamorphosis", which is defined as "a transformation, as by magic or sorcery".
Random Fact: "If Freeza used a watering can on Piccolo, he would turn into a tree. FACT."

I don't know about a pun, but Popo himself is based off a charcter from Hindu mythology, I believe. :P

Well... This is just some kinda guess... But he IS God's assistant, perhaps it's a pun on "Pope"? No idea if I'm right, but it does make sense... Sorta...

I figured 'Gero' was reffering to a "Gear" with him being associated with robots and all o.o

That's Giru's pun.

Except "Gero" isn't pronounced "Gear-oh"... it's more along "Geh-roh". The long list of puns in a text-file I have from Julian says, "etymology unclear. Frogs say "gero-gero" when they croak, and it's apparently also an otomatopoeia for retching. Dunno what that has to do with him, though." This is old, so he very well could know, now :).

SaiyaJedi wrote:Dr. Gero: This one, I'm not really clear about. On the one hand, "gerogero" sounds either like the croak of a frog, or someone retching. A more intriguing connection is to the Greek root "geros," which means "old man," but I don't believe Toriyama's ever really said.
Apparently not :P
Though the Greek theory sounds good.

Umm...I don't know if this is a fan-name or one given by Toriyama himself, but what about #17 and #18, that other name for them? Juuhachigou and Juunanagou (if that's his name)

"jûnana" (17) = "seventeen"; "gou" (号) = "number"
"jûhachi" (18) = "eighteen"; "gou" (号) = "number"

Their names are simply literal.

人造人間17号 = jinzôningen jûnana-gô = "Aritificial Human Number Seventeen"
人造人間18号 = jinzôningen jûhachi-gô = "Artificial Human Number Eighteen"

I'm not sure if this has ever been asked before, but is the name "Kibito" a pun off of anything? I also sometimes see it spelled "Kibit".

The pun was explained in a old Ask VegettoEX, though the question wasn't about it :P
That being said, if I had it to do over again, I would have used the spelling "Kibito," since it is derived from the word "Tsukibito" (attendant), as per my "Japanese origin" clause above. By the time I realized what I had done, it was too late to change it, however, and so the spelling stuck from there on.

Ehya......what about Cell? Or Veku? Both don't sound like puns, unless it's kanji related. >_<

Well, Cell isn't really a pun - it's just a descriptive name. Like General Blue.

Who's "Veku"?
