The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

TOEI and Disney use the same scheme for their animated series/film, I personally did not occur to compare Boo and Gohan to Goku/Vegeta.

Thanks for the find, Cloud! :)

I noticed it, but only in my most recent re-watch of the series. It was awesome when I realized what I was seeing there.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Gohan/Boo mirroring Goku/Vegeta is only in the anime though, so it seems more like Toei paying tribute to the original Goku/Vegeta fight rather than them just having a set pattern for how fights start.

Ahh, for a second I thought Toriyama actually read some of his past work while writing the boo arc, but I had a feeling it could've been an anime only scene. Nice move by Toei paying homage to Goku vs. Vegeta.

I pointed out the last time this was brought up just how appropriate it was; Gohan, with no inhibitions and intent to kill for the first time in his life, faces down someone he already knows is stronger than him. I wonder if anyone and Toei caught that.

Well, give Toei credit for paying homage to one of the first big battles of Z.

It's too bad the worst animators are the ones who drew it. The Goku/Vegeta fight looks better than this newer homage. Was it Lucky House who animated it?

Yeah, it's hilarious how stiff Gohan and Boo look, especially compared to Goku and Vegeta.

Worst? I think Yukio Ebisawa is worse in the Buu arc.

I noticed this one too. It's a nice homage, but as everyone here says, the animations is kinda stiff'n crappy looking.

Personally, I didn't get the homage. I just don't see the real connection. The two fights just seem completely unrelated, and you'd probably be grasping at straws attempting to find a link in there.

Agreed. Aside from the fact that Gohan is wearing Goku's gi (although not the same gi that Goku was wearing then) and the very obvious "one guy fights another guy with the fate of the earth at stake," there really isn't any thematic connection. This homage could have been done at any other fight in the series. Still, it's interesting to see the two sets of images side by side.

If I remember correctly, this fight also had the Jackie Chun and Goku kicking each other thing.

Yeah it was in that same episode(before the above scene IIRC). Perhaps there are more homages we haven't found yet?

I think it's not so much a homage as it is the animators not being able to come up with their own fight scenes for filler material.

The strongest Earthling at the time vs. the intruder from space could be the connection they were going for.

Goku's first real challenge, which started his journey to Namek and ended up with him becoming pretty much independent as a warrior and much more dependent on himself, started with the Vegeta fight.

Gohan's first "real" challenge, where he finally became an adult who didn't scream for his father/depend on his father (when the odds became bad) during a fight, was his fight against Gotenks Buu.

But, yeah. The homage is still pretty loosely connected IMO. Gohan vs. Cell would have worked much better.
