"DBZ has no story." HOW?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

What? I'm sorry but- What? What the HFIL are you talking about? I happened to be away from this site as the replies kept coming since I don't spend my whole day here and my last post was me checking up on it.

Also I forgot to put in the "no" for the title. Yeah, that was stupid. So what?

B) Not seen or read the series for a significant amount

That is what I'm fucking talking about you being C you are actively trying to provoke a response from fan's.
Also you absolutely knew that there was a story may not be the best, but you knew that there was a story.
Why would you make a thread then not get on and check it. (ridiculous)
You apparently don't read your thread's either if you didn't know what I was talking about.

What the "HFIL" are you talking about there was no last "post" this is you only fucking post the first thing was your thread title.
So please tell me how this was you "checking up" on this thread?

Lastly you never answered my first Question if you don't think it has a story (which it most definantly does) What the hell are you doing here?

1. Certain people be they fans or non-fans of Dragon Ball claim that DBZ has no story when it's unfounded BS. I made this thread to ask people on this forum their thoughts on this. I wasn't trying to "provoke a response from fans." At least not in the sense of a troll like you make me out to be. Hell, I'd deck you for being a goddamn prick when I didn't deserve it.
2. The "last post" of mine was a reply to dbboxkaifan. That was when I return to this thread to "check up" on it.
3. To answer your first question: Yes, yes, yes. Dragon Ball Z has a story. I stated that in my OP. And I'm here because I'm a Dragon Ball fan. What else?

Is it so wrong to make a simple mistake? And wasn't this forum suppose to promote maturity amongst each other? When you're unbanned, I expect an apology if you have the common decency. But until then, F**K you!

I'm sorry for that outburst. But I've never expected to be so hurt and insulted here.

I feel the people who tend to say that really don't look into the series long enough and only really see the aesthetics to it. Most people I've meet who look down on the story end up saying "Just spiky haired cartoon guys hitting each other through mountains." While that is true in a sense, I think they just fail to see the charm and Shonen-ness that goes into the writing. While some other franchises have complex moral messages about human nature or deep complicated sexual romances, Dragon Ball doesn't. However that doesn't mean it lacks story, it certainly doesn't, its just that its a little more straight forward in terms of how the story progresses than others. Honestly, I feel one of Dragon Ball's strongest areas in terms of its story would be the relationships amongst the characters and the arcs some characters go through. So next time someone bashes DB for it's lack of said "story", explain to them that while it may not be some masterpiece, its the characters and Shonen spirit that keep the plot so full of discussion and debate.

Damn dude, take a chill pill. We are friendly folks here. No need for the hostility. And I'm pretty sure the OP made it clear that Dragon Ball does actually have a story... :|

...which it does, a pretty damn good one I must say. From chapter one to the presumed death of Son Goku on planet Namek, it was all gold.

I remember my girlfriend saying: ''Damn, I was so excited at first but this story is so retarded that no-one really dies in there!!
Someone dies, like Krillin, which I cared for, but no, they will resurect him with dragon balls twice..... I was really hoping for him to die then. Who the hell cares about them? There is no damn tension or drama, even Jesus knew that ressurection works only once..... Is there anyone who really died, except for Cell or Freeza???''

EDIT: This is one of the biggest reasons she dislikes Dragon Ball nowadays, she likes Naruto more...

Honestly, I could care less if nobody dies. But there's tension if the Earth is destroyed or if Goku or anyone else who was revived before dies again unless they can find New Namek.

THe anime/manga with billions of flashbacks and where almost everyone share some 'sad' backstory, and it's mostly the same 'loved ones have died in a holocaust' or 'nobody likes me' (in some cases, it's both), and with that emobitch Mary Sue Sasuke Uchiha? Hmmmm....

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

How much less could you care? (Grammar Police)

The problem with the Buu arc is that it didn't really portray how high its stakes were. Scenes that should have been earth-shattering (Literally, in one instance) weren't nearly as much so because in-between those scenes the story just seemed to plod along- you should be on the edge of your seat with the number of one-ups that happen with Super Buu, but you aren't. There were sparks that could started something, like how the anime played up Goku's Super Sayain 3 transformation, the shots of the leftover humans in tents surrounded by ruins, Piccolo's becoming a reverse-reverse-utilitarian by telling Buu to kill the rest of humanity to stall because restoring enormous damage Buu does is the easy part.

Not to put the movie on a higher pedestal than it's already been put at the box office, but I'm honestly thinking back to the Avengers; the movie had a ton of one-liners, a lot more than I expected, but they were clearly staged reprieves from overarching fact that the Avengers were never winning against the Chitari, they were stalling them. Not that I didn't love the Avengers.

Collectively... well, Dragon Ball doesn't really do a ton of melodrama. That really is a strength in one aspect; it's cheesy in other ways, but it doesn't strain your ability to care with angst or minute plot developments that ultimately don't matter, so you can take it a bit more seriously when it wants you do because you can recognize the tone change.

I have to come to Naruto's defense for a moment; watched pre-Ship Naruto vs Sasuke dubbed with a friend recently, and I was astonished at how through their banter was, as to how much the two characters has analyzed each other and their motives. There's a place for it.

Well, I really love the Gundam for this case. When somebody die + you like him and some character is longing for him, it creates some drama and reason to push the other character somewhere and help him grow and I really like these situations, where there actually goes something. So I do not blame my girlfriend for her opinion and I also was shocked and pissed on Jiraiya's death or Asuma really got me. This thing is not present in Dragon Ball after reading/or watching it past Freeza saga and I still liked the DB, but I didn't care that much about the characters. They'll die? So what, they have the radar and dragonballs are out there. Only thing that had me still engaged in the series were the unique fights and how to stop Buu.
But not to kill Dragon Ball entirely, there was the possibility of Buu destroying the universe, which I wasn't afraid off, but I really did care about Vegeta who had the chance of vanishing completely.
There was also one saddening moment, how Goten, Trunks and co. perished with the Earth, but there you have it few episodes later watching down from the cliff completely at ease, like they didn't even died.
I like Dragon Ball, but think that more drama wouldn't kill mr. Toriyama.

I'm kinda bothered and oversaturated by thos 9GAG memes these days, but really, this striked me in mind with Cell,
saying that if he wins the Cell Games, he will engage different planets and destroys the whole universe...... B**ch please!

Toriyama doesn't like be depressing, its more about the moment in Dragon Ball. Either way this thread is terrible, obviously it has a story.

Well, only thing without a story and being book can be only manual for washing machine, so it's also technically impossible for franchise spawning 42 volumes of comic books and 500+ episodes of anime to not having a story. So I too think this topic is rather weird, maybe if the title was rewritten as DBZ has poor story?

But yeah, there are different things I like about this series than solid complicated story.... I like how story of One Piece is done, but on the other side, during the Ace rescue it started to bore me heavily from it's slow overcomplicateness.

The more important thing is that the Pokemon anime is cash-in series; it's own directors have no issue saying so. And thus is has to be able to continue indefinitely or end at any time.

I understand her point, but you know, Toriyama did build up drama and tension at a couple of points when it looked like the dead heroes wouldn't get revived with the DBs. Like in the Piccolo Daimaou arc, after Piccolo killed Shenlong and Karin told Gokuu that they'd forever float in limbo (yeah, I know, not necessarily accurate, but whatever). Of course, Toriyama undid the drama then when he introduced God and the ability to revive Shenlong, but since this was the first time a major character was killed, he did pretty well.

Then, in the Saiyan arc, most of our heroes were killed off, including Piccolo, which means no God and no DBs. Actually, scratch that, even before Piccolo dies, Vegeta mentions that there must be other Dragon Balls on Namek, so if you didn't forget that already, you might already be inclined to think, "It's all right, they'll just bring them back on Piccolo's home planet!" But, even still, it was dramatic because it was Piccolo sacrificing his life to save Gokuu's son, and just because there may be a chance that he can still be brought back doesn't necessarily demean the impact of the scene.

Also, between the Namekian DBs and the Great Elder's revival, there was that thing about not being able to revive someone who'd died twice before. Like Kuririn, Chaozu and, eventually, our main character, the presumably dead Gokuu post-Namek. But yeah, I think Toriyama probably could've handled that part of the series better, and it got to a point where the DBs weren't even the focus of the later arcs.

The Pocket Monsters cartoons do have some over-arching stories, just not to the degree of Dragon Ball.

Let's not forget that the crew has no idea where Namek is or how they could get their in any reasonable period of time at that point. Let alone how the Namekians might react to them.

Oh I agree, Pokemon has no problems referencing or advancing it's own continuity or having character arcs within seasons (Particularly Diamond/Pearl), like the occasional shot of Misty or Ash bringing back older Pokemon in for League battles despite that the new younger fans weren't alive when he originally caught a lot of them. It just can't bind itself too heavily to it or it will stop plugging the current Pokemon generation as much as it's designed to, or the fact that characters don't age (Which of course is also openly stated by the directors as intentional) might catch up with hit, since we can only expect so many ranges of emotions out of children, a few people like Brock being exceptions.

Yeah. And after that, you've got Freeza and a password that they have to contend with.

Not implying that you didn't know already, but many cartoons have this same thing, perhaps to keep them relatable to the audience (e.g. Pretty much all the characters in The Simpsons).
