I'm not trying to defend the dub's changes here, just wanted to point out that they were still kind of unlikeable to begin with, that it wasn't an entirely dub convention.
Though, on the Valley Girl thing - and this is a serious question here, not trying to be funny - what exactly IS a 'Valley Girl'? The one time someone's tried to explain it to me, was 'Think the girls off of Clueless', which if that's what it means...I...never really quite got that vibe off of dub Bulma. Or have I just repressed a lot of it?
Yeah, I know, just...Saiyan.
And if you want to know what a Valley Girl is, just search it on Wikipedia. I still, to this day, don't know why on Earth they made Vollmer put on that stupidly exaggerated accent. Then again, I don't know why they had Sabat do a piss-poor and exaggerated Australian accent for Jheese. Or a retard voice for Recoom. And so on...

All the females are extra-hostile/bitchy in the dub. Especially Chi-Chi.
IKR In the manga and the original version of the anime, Chichi was hard on Goku throughout most of the series however you can still see that she does care about him but in the dub, she's downright nasty to the man and angrily criticizes every aspect of his character in front of the boy who idolizes him (calling him an overly-muscular thug with no brain and add to the fact that Goku in the dub is like the best person in the world), she's also shown ungrateful for all the efforts the Z-Senshi go through to save the earth in the Garlic Jr. Saga where she called them bad influences (she calls them 'delinquents' in the subs), Bulma refutes "But these guys save the planet." and Chichi responds "Yeah, so?". She's even flat-out racist when she calls Goten a "monster" (as well as referring Goku and Gohan to as monsters) then starts crying. Yep, Chichi is really bad in the dub.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I'm just about done with the concept of reboots and making shows that were products of their time and impactful "new and sexy" and in line with modern tastes and sensibilities. Let stuff stay in their era and give today's kids their own shit to watch.

I know, what the fuck was up with that? Did they want the viewers to hate Chi-Chi even more? The voice in the first place doesn't help, but the dialogue to boot...

I think they succeded since they convince a whole lot of people that she's a 24/7 bitch tirade (Japanese fans know she's not always angry and protective of Gohan) although I thought Cranz sounded nice as Chichi (unless when she's yelling).

Really? I thought Cranz sounded nice as Chichi (unless when she's bitchin').
Nah, most of the time, she sounded on edge, even when she wasn't raging.

They just wanted a cheap laugh to get out of the viewers. FUNi was told to "punch up the comedy" from what I heard. Really, they should've gone with Dragon Ball if they even wanted their "punched up" comedy to be remotely justified.

Freeza, the unimportant characters and the narrator. Look at the very first episode of DB, "Their lives were about to undergo some radical new changes... Toadallyyyy radicaaaal". Then we have things like "These apples are roar-tten!" pretty much every episode the minor characters, and Freeza, with "pop goes the weasel", "shish-kebab" etc... Ugh.
I kind of like the shoe salesman line thought, and I think Oolong nearly always has better lines in the dub, especially in DB. "I wish for the worlds most comfortable pair of ultra soft underwear!" is actually funnier than what he's meant to say in my opinion, as are all of his sarcastic comments.

Of course, Dragon Ball was meant to be funny so that helped a bit. Still wish they didn't change the dialogue so much.

But...it wasn't funny. At all. It was just corny and stupid.

For kids, it was. And sadly, with other TV dubs back then and even now, it was prevalent for this kind of dub dialogue to be used. Not just DBZ. Tragic, ain't it?

Well,
I certainly never found it funny, but whatever. I don't understand how making it (subjectively) funnier would make it more appealing to children, especially since it's not even meant to be a comedy or even an action-comedy (talking about
DBZ here, not
DB).

Yeah, kids would find the action awesome, the story (if possibly followed correctly through the filler) stellar and the characters cool even with an accurate dub. To be fair, DBZ had funny moments, the Boo Saga in particular, but the dub put in many "funny" lines where it wasn't appropriate at all.

Cool, I get what you're 'Saiyan' then.
After searching it on Wiki and then on TV Tropes both, it seems that I was more or less right, it's kind of the Clueless type thing I was thinking of. I really must be forgetting a lot of it for Bulma or something, because it just doesn't sound familiar to me. I remember her going 'Whatever' in response to someone a few times, but never like 'What-EVAH!', like how I would think of that speaking style.
Unless maybe Clueless-style was so extreme that it in-of-itself was a joke, so that I don't even recognize the more normal version of Valley Girl...hmm...
And no, I never watched Clueless - it was just popular with some of my cousins when I was little.

Well, I'm pretty clueless about
Clueless myself

, but just listen to her again. The accent is quite distracting. I mean, she's not bad
all the time. I think I remember one scene in
DBZ Movie #13 when Blooma was encouraging Tapion to tell her his backstory, and Vollmer sounded very natural with genuine warmth.

It'll definitely be something I try to listen for specifically, whenever I get around to watching the show dubbed again. I'm still recovering from my last all-the-way-through watch subbed, so that could be a while.
So is this something that was worse for Vollmer's Bulma at any particular parts, like season 3 Freeza stuff, or Z in general, or when she was young in Dragon Ball, or etc.? Or does it pretty much persist throughout most of Vollmer's work?
Ah yeah, I remember that scene. I liked it quite a bit in both versions.

I can't quite remember; understandably, I haven't listened to her Blooma in a while. I've heard that she was a bit better in
Dragon Ball, though.
