An update about Viz
I went to my Bookstore the other day and saw that many of the volumes of Dragonball and Dragonball Z now had Viz's new logo - the mark of merging with Shopro.
Having heard that Volume 9 of DB had added a Censor, I checked out what Volumes were there to look for other changes.
First I could find was Volume 4. The potential changes here would be 2 things. Removing the "Is this the end of Goku?! Then how do you explain Dragonball Z?!" thing at the end of one chapter and Goku's privates.
Well, both were fully intact. Matter of fact, it seems identical to the copy I have with the old logo from a few months back.
Next up was DBZ Vol 2. The potential edits would be Gohans privates and some of Piccolo's more violent, gruesome words, along with Vegeta's murdering of the Cultivar.
All intact.
So, next was DBZ Vol 18, notorious for the amazing and brutal dismembering of the Cell Juniors. What did I find?
Nothing changed, again.
What this means is that the only thing changed, from what I can gather, is showing of Bulma's naked body.
And to be fully honest...I suddenly lack resentment over this. Okay, stupid edits. But...why do we need to see Bulma's tits on...what, 4 occasions? If that is all they changed, then holy crap, no reason to flip out. No worse than Popo lips. Pencil n' paper boobs don't really matter to me, and I know what really happened, so no big loss.
O'course, what remains is an issue with the later DBZ Volumes. Nothing really has changed there, but looking at what they did with Naruto, maybe they'll grow some balls and make Boo the Djinn back into Majin Boo in a re-issue, and if we're lucky, Hercule as well.
Viz really isn't as evil as we all thought they were, eh?

What do you mean by "What they did with Naruto"? Also it seems that they're not too big on censoring the violence.Duo wrote:I went to my Bookstore the other day and saw that many of the volumes of Dragonball and Dragonball Z now had Viz's new logo - the mark of merging with Shopro.

No, the reprint of Naruto doesn't match the dub still. All the reprint does is get rid of 'What the hell are you doing?' and 'Come on at me, you big dick' making them 'What the heck are you doing?' and 'Come on at me, fool'.
Naruto's attacks are still given their SJ names (Ninja Centerfold instead of Sexy no Jutsu; Art of the Shadow Doppleganger instead of Kage Bushin no Jutsu (Shadow Clone Jutsu) and the nide form of the Sexy no Jutsu is left untouched.)

Well, it was in Weekly Jump #21/22. According to the update-desperately-needed "Manga Reference Guide," that's tankôbon #31, which was Viz Graphic Novel DBZ #15, which comprised their own domestic monthly Shonen Jump November 2003 to January 2004 issues.
Yes, it was edited in the monthly, and remained edited in the GN.

I got Volume 40 / 24 today.
The sexuality censorship is ever so present, and many instances where they obviously cuss is still variations of "Curse you!" and "Blast it!".
The scene with the Elder Kaioshin and Goku (bribing him) is dumbed down...and Elder Kaioshin's yelling at Goku after taking a Ki blast to the face is very...mild. The word "Dumb-butt" was even used.
There was one point that was kind of funny, where Mr. Satan is supposed to cuss but they put "%&#@!!".
"Djinn" still remains, as well...
"Gotenks" name wasn't changed at all.
"Super Saiyan 3" was written as "Super Saiyan Level 3" which, uh, is just freakin' fine.
All of this aside, everything in the volume is fantastic. It was great to finally see such a well articulated version of the dialogue leading up to the Ssj3 Transformation n' all that.
And...that's it. Questions?

Duo, of course Bulma's breasts are important, I would rather Bulma's Boobs than Gohan's penis. Ya know it's all about they think women will freak out or something at the sight of breasts in a Manga, yet Viz knows that us men don't care.

Vegito: What do you call a Goku & a Vegeta? Gogeta sounds nice.

I actually noticed an interesting change between Shonen Jump and the graphic novel. In One Piece, Nami returns to her home island and heads towards Arlong Park. On the way she is approached by a young boy who wants to attack Arlong. In the Shonen Jump version he says Arlong "destroyed" his father yet in the 8th graphic novel they change it to "murdered".
Generally though I find some of their changes annoying. They originally promised us un-cut versions yet it’s starting to remind me of the dubs with them making some comments more “kid friendly”. I realise they’re trying to appeal to the child market as well, but as I previously stated, they told more mature fans the manga will be un-cut.
I just hope Smoker is called Smoker, not Chaser when he shows up during the LogueTown arc. I can stomach most of the 4Kids names except that one.

Hm, "Destroying" to me seems like a cop out. Shoot, it ranks up there with "perished" as being something a watered down show uses when they absolutely must say "kill", "die" murdered", but just go with one of those two. A lot of American made cartoons and butchered anime have gone with this concept, as did the Ocean version of DBZ. Hell, I still remember Ocean's DBZ only using the words; "die", "death", kill", "murdered", etc., in the first 4 episodes and 2 later ones that seemed like basic flukes. One series in particular that's very famous for using "destroying" and "perish" as cop outs seems to be Power Rangers (can't believe that show is still running, sheesh).Super Sonic wrote:This is my opinion, but saying that you'll destroy someone sounds a lot more messy than saying you're simply going to kill them. To me it sounds like there won't be much left of them when you're done.

Well that's what it really means, but it's not seen that way. When a dog is put to sleep people say "it was destroyed", but they didn't blow it to bits they just suffocated it. "Destroyed" is a very general term, it could be used for non-living things as well, and that dis-attachment from life is what makes it more palatable.Super Sonic wrote:With the latter you hit the nail on what I was saying as those monsters got blown to bits. That's what I think of as destroyed.
(é) Yeah, I'm famous. Super famous. I start things.

Dogs aren't "suffocated" when it's said they are "destroyed". We give them an overdose of highly concentrated anaesthetic that basically shuts off "the switch" in their brain that keeps them alive.desirecampbell wrote: Well that's what it really means, but it's not seen that way. Sorry for going off topic, but I don't want a misconception like that spread.
