How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
Hello!
How did you folks feel about the English singers in Kai?
I do like these two
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdzNN8rjOo0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpnq1RdywZg
But in my opinion this is just horrible
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icsM-38OSq0
I couldn't find the rest of them but what made Funimation think it was a good idea to let the voice cast sing the opening and closing credits? I honestly wish they would have kept the Japanese singers for the opening and closing songs.
Does anyone else feel the same way? because anytime I watch Kai as soon as that intro starts playing I just switch to Japanese.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

If your going to produce a dub, why not go all out and do the openings and endings anyway?
And also, Sean Schemmel's Dragon Soul isn't really that bad at least IMO. However, Justin Cook's definitely is the least in quality.

Re: How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
Part 1 - Sean Schemmel VA of Goku
(The one you called horrible)
Part 2 - Justin Cook VA of Raditz
Part 3 - Vic Mignogna VA of Edward Elric and Also Burter and Broly from DBZ/Kai
(The version that you praised the most)
Part 4 - Greg Ayres VA of Guldo
Part 5 - Sonny Strait VA of Bardock and Krillin
Part 6 - Brina Palencia VA of Puar and Chaozu
Part 7 - Mix of Greg Ayres, Sean Schemmel and Justin Cook
Part 8 - Mix of Brina Palencia, Vic Mignogna and Sonny Strait.
I think that not all of the VAs did a terrible job, like you said, Vic Mignogna performed well. Personally I think that Sean Schemmel was pretty good, but the autotune can be distracting.
I liked Brina Palencia's rendition most of the time, and she wrote the English lyrics as well.
FUNimation usually do well in dubbing songs, and remember that Kai was brought to the US with the driving force of television networks airing this for children between 8-12, think about what they would be thinking if they show Takayoshi Tanimoto's performance of Dragon Soul... [What is this weird language that I have never heard before etc.] (Even though The Lone Warrior was used as an insert in Episode 82 with the Japanese vocals, even in the Nicktoons broadcast.)

My thoughts exactly! I have no problem whatsoever with Japanese songs in and of themselves (I've got hundreds of 'em on my iPod, after all), but I don't like them in the context of English dubs. Like you said, if you're going to produce a dub, why not go all out? I have an all-or-nothing outlook when it comes to dubs. When I hear a Japanese song in an English dub, it breaks the fourth wall and takes me out of the moment.Gonstead wrote:If your going to produce a dub, why not go all out and do the openings and endings anyway?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

There's basically one for each taste, and so, my two picks are Greg Ayres and Vic Mignogna.

I'm cautious to repeat stories I've already told just because I don't want to annoy anyone by sounding like a broken record, so I apolgize for anyone who's read this story...DBZAOTA482 wrote:That one isn't that bad IMO.Gonstead wrote:If your going to produce a dub, why not go all out and do the openings and endings anyway?

...But there does indeed exist a version of "Dragon Soul" sung by Chris Sabat. Sort of. He said at a con that he never intended to sing it because it was way out of his vocal range, but he did record a "joke version" of sorts just to show to his friends at FUNimation. He said he sang the whole thing with a heavy southern accent and inserted swear words into random places, just for laughs. I'd love to hear it, but it doesn't sound like anyone outside of FUNimation is going to hear it. At least not for a while, anyway.
Similarly, I once asked him (via his Facebook page) if FUNimation has a blooper reel for their DBZ dub, and much like Chris Sabat's take on "Dragon Soul," such a blooper reel does exist, but it hasn't been made public. Oh man would I love to hear that!

I really don't care for the other three.

Dragon Ball could do with stuff like that, though I would assume the age rating may have to go up a little for some bloopers

Worst English Kai song is Kokoro No Hane, it sounds like a mix that a teenage girl did with Garage Band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PetHXweDBrg
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Finally someone who thinks the same way I do!
Also, in some rare cases, dubbed songs are even better than the original (look at some of the German Detective Conan openings and the English dub of Opening 3 of One Piece for some examples).
I've also got hundreds of dubbed songs on my ipod too BlackPaladin.

Re: How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
Nickleodeon PL has a strange policy of cutting off endings, leaving original openings and dubbing insert songs. You know why? Because they want kids to know the original version- or they wrote so on facebook. Read: we just don't care, it's cheaaaper!

Re: How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
I don't really mind either way. Dubbing songs sort of feels like an old-school thing to do that not many companies do anymore, but as much as I'm okay with dubs having the original Japanese songs, it's kind of nice to see it done again here and there. Dragon Ball GT and Kai's dubbed openings were fine and dandy if you ask me.

Re: How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
I pretty much feel the same way. In the case of Kai, some of the vocalists weren't all that great, but since I skip the opening most of the time I didn't really care that much.Bussani wrote:I don't really mind either way. Re: How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
I don't mind song dubs if they're done to similar standards of quality as the original song (I loved ‘Ginyū Force Rules’ for instance), but that's rarely the case.
I'm very glad the Portuguese dubs of the Digimon series all keep the insert songs in Japanese, for instance, because if they were to dub them, I just know they'd turn out terrible.

I actually thought that the EU Portuguese Digimon songs were pretty good. However, I thought that the EU-PT dub of "Oversoul" from Shaman King was just exceptional. It's probably one of the best dubs of a song I've ever heard.

Hear the Savers songs and you might not feel that way :s
The lyrics are good, but the singer just sounds flat and generic.
And while the singers in the openings of 02, Tamers and Frontier were good, the 02 and Tamers songs had ridiculous lyrics. Adventure's ending and Frontier's opening were great though.

I thought the Mexican Spanish dub of "We Were Angels" was exceptional.
...Then again, I love that song in general. One of Kageyama's best, if you ask me.

Re: How did you feel about the English singers in Kai?
They're all awful except for Mignogalogalog. Even then, his 'full' version of the opening isn't that good, his TV version is much better. Auto-tuned Schemmel is depressing.
