Spelling of characters names?

Our (and by "our" I specifically mean "my") problem was and is not simply "it ain't the same! this is 'umerica and we dun spell it that way here!"

Personally, my preference for name adaptations is that they retain at least something remotely resembling the pronunciation of the character's name, and that's my number one priority -- everything else is gravy. This is why I loved Julian's "Tullece" adaptation so much -- first and foremost, it preserves the pronunciation of "taaresu", but beyond that, it actually very cleverly introduces the pun behind the name with an appropriate spelling "in English".

You don't get that with "Vegerot". It communicates the pun, but it doesn't resemble the original pronunciation of the name at all. To me, a name is a name is a name, and that's that. In that respect, I hold the same disdain for "Pocus" (Pui-Pui) that I do for "Vegerot".

It's all a school-of-thought, translator's-choice method, though. I don't like it, I don't prefer it, and I don't personally use it in my style guide. Do I understand the logic behind them? Do I find them to be valid adaptation methods? Yes and yes.

But they're still dumb! ^_~

I'm rather inconsistent with my name spellings, because I just plain don't have the knowledge I require to settle on a name in most cases - it's too darn confusing!

Yeah, I kind of agree. Me switching to using "Kakarotto" so it would "make sense" with "Vegetto" was one of my attempts at consistency with my naming scheme, but no-one can even be 100% consistent, especially when you're dealing with Japanese-to-English translations that depend on judgement, tone, etc.

Yeah, that's the spelling used on Carddass cards and other merchandise back when the series was still running.

Even still, I've been using "SS" for a while, and no-one piped up to say in surprise, "Wait, Gokuu was a Nazi?" Since, you know, this is a Dragon Ball forum. So it's not a problem for me.

Oh, it's completely my issue. I know that they are different and all, but my mind still leaps to "Secret Police" when I see "SS", and not "Super Saiyan".

I've been going through the podcasts fairly randomly, and I noticed in the old ones Mike said Super Saiyajin, but in the new ones he says Super Saiyan. I haven't got to one where he says why he changed, though.

I don't know that I made any silly "formal announcement" about changing, but a lot of it simply had to do with working on new materials for the site, formalizing style guide stuff with Julian, thinking more thoughtfully about pronunciations due to the audio nature of the podcast, etc. It just kinda happened.

Also, I love the idea of annoying certain people by NOT using the "-jin" suffix, having an entirely accurate-and-localized pronunciation of the word, and yet still not pronouncing it like the dub they all watched. It's only maybe 5% of the reasoning, but it's somewhat hilarious all the hate that I've seen come from that and a properly-pronounced "Budōkai", so anything I can toss back that way as a legitimate reason... blah blah blah, childish talk, blah blah blah.

Meh, I use the names I'm accustomed to, like Goku, Bulma (sorry guys, I don't like saying "Blooma", it looks out of place for her...) Kuririn, Yamucha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, Freeza, Kaio, you name it. Mostly it's Funi and Japanese spellings mixed. Blame the Romanian subtitles.

I keep a list of spelling preferences and my logic behind them on my site, but it's not complete yet, and I change my mind about some things roughly once a year. Either way, I try to stay consistent and logical about things, and I'll probably add quite a bit to it in the next couple weeks as I go through certain books again. But I think you guys have heard quite a bit about my spelling preferences already. ...I like "Gokuu."
