I meant understandable as by someone who knows the english language but not the dub names. I don't see why they can't use Mr. Satan instead of the H-Word or Kienzan instead of Destructo Disk.JeffJarrett wrote:Since it'll be written in English, the names have to be in English (=dub names). Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
Saw some references to Kanzenshuu in their discussion thread come up in my alerts.
Very disheartening. People are obviously confusing bits of information without fully understanding it, and then attempting to argue from a position of authority regarding translations. One there I see is that the character's full name is "Mark Satan".
No, it's not. (Insert explanation of how Videl describes to Gohan how it's weird that he has a last name since most people don't, how "Mr. Satan" is a stage name in and of itself separate from any "real" character name, etc.)
If you're not in a position to understand where that information comes from and how it's used in the series and its supplemental material, you're in no position to be telling the rest of the world how they should be reading text in a video game you're poorly translating.

Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
Obviously I'm in the minority here, and I definitely agree that they should be using some kind of terminology that everyone could agree on rather than just going for the lowest common denominator with the dub terms. And I'm not saying the dub or it's fans, of which I am one, are inherently lowly or something - I'm just saying that going for the side that they think has the most English-language based fans is a bit skewed.
That said, and again I'm in the minority - but if it's an English translation that bases itself on dub terms, I'll take it. I just want to give the game a try already, it's been out way too long without my having a reasonable chance at seeing what it's all about. If I have to make due with 'dubisms' to do that, then I'll suck it up and be fine with that.
That's just assuming that I can actually play it anyway though. My laptop's hardly top of the line, and I can't imagine it playing a large MMO without lagging horribly...but I'll give it a shot.

Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
The problem near as I can tell (and, granted, I'm not really reading much here) is that they're not even "translating" -- they're dumping text into an online translator, attempting to make the best sense they can, and then swapping in dub names.
I think I might have a better chance understanding it in Korean

...Ohh. In...that case...um...VegettoEX wrote:The problem near as I can tell (and, granted, I'm not really reading much here) is that they're not even "translating" -- they're dumping text into an online translator, attempting to make the best sense they can, and then swapping in dub names.

...Wow. I can't even begin to try to justify it if that's what they're doing. I guess I can see the 'ease' of the idea. I once contemplated throwing some French interviews I found with Katsura into Google Translate once, but the outcome was dreadful, and after I thought about it, I didn't even want to think about how much was probably lost if I had gone through with that plan (going from Japanese probably, then to French, and then to my Google Translate English version...)
Wow. If that really is what they're doing, it'll be awful.

Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
You'd be better off learning some Korean, since the language itself is easier to learn than Japanese or any other Eastern language. Their alphabet is pretty similar to ours, with a few additional symbols. Dumping the English patches in the file doesn't really help everybody in the long run.

Really? Just because they want to use dub terms?VegettoEX wrote:Then I declare it unplayable.
I understand everyone wants an accurate English version of this game but that will not happen anytime soon, officially that is. I'm just glad they are attempting a full translation.

Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
It occurs to me that this game is explicitly and exclusively based on the manga. And there actually is a licensed English translation of the manga, with it's own set of name translations/adaptatations distinct from those used in the Funi dub. Name translations/adaptations that are, you know, accurate much more often than not. Any particular reason they couldn't use those?
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?

Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
That's the problem. They thought the dub terms are more popular than the names used in the manga or Japanese anime. Which is kinda sad since Funimation is long past these kind of things. I just told them on DBO that they should just use the original Japanese name. See what they replied back in the Translation thread.

Kai Ousama?! XD
Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
Okay, so they have 'Original Japanese' which is untouched romanized Japanese and 'Kanzenshuu' which is similarly correct modified romanizations..... What do.
Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
Someone should really point out that there's a difference between "weaboos" and "people who like correct terminology"... I'm fine with English names if they're actually translations of the Japanese ones (or acceptably close)... which "Special Beam Cannon" just plain isn't.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
Or Tribeam, that one annoys me so very much, it's not even visually correct.
I'm digging the Kai Osama Bin Laden though. Who knew he was a terrorist, maybe he's the one who woke up Bils. Maybe his pun really is on Bill... Clinton?
Anyway I had enough, I'm gonna try and learn Korean.

I think someone just got banned for standing up to the extremely rude mod; the message just disappeared.
Re: Dragon Ball Online Discussion
I got a warning (by Citrinate) for my last post in the poll thread. Reason: Flaming (Minor). And here I thought I was being quite the polite one, given the circumstances. I guess I'll just refrain from discussing that any further, as even with the English patch being available, the game would still be too laggy to be satisfying.

I'm not actually contributing to the discussion, and I haven't read what other people are posting, but I'd like to remind people that no-one beyond the four of us that run this website actually speak FOR this website, and I'd also ask (not that I'd expect differently) that you all present yourselves appropriately and with friendly demeanors if you are going to mention where else on the Internet you hang out and what you believe in
.
(Though I'm looking at this "vote" thread right now, and it's clear that whomever it is that's responsible for the initial post doesn't actually grasp what a romanization is, how to go about doing it, what a transliteration/adaptation is, how to classify them, etc. Like, "Vejitto" isn't his "original Japanese" name -- it's be "bejitto" if you're going to do a straight romanization -- and then why is "Ten Shinhan" something called "Original Japanese" and somehow separate from "Tenshinhan" that we + Viz + FUNimation subtitles use, which is also used by... err... most of the rest of the world...?, and really what's the difference between the two beyond getting into the super-vague discussion over whether or not "Shinhan" is a surname...?).
I'm super incredibly behind and supportive of people being able to play this game in English -- hell, I'd LOVE to be able to! -- but it's clear that the folks that have put themselves (somehow) into a point of authority behind this project probably aren't the best ones to do it. I'm not saying that we would be, either, but I don't have to think I could do a better job to be able to point out all of the inconsistencies and incredible flaws I see in each train of logic here...

Doesn't really matter anymore. The thread got locked last time I checked.

So I guess I won't be making a thread there about how VegettoEX would beat Citrinate in a fight.
