I thought he just asked Bils if he was going to destroy the Earth, not asking him to do it? Or am I remembering wrong?CaBrPi wrote:Don't forget Whis has a line in the trailer where he asks Bills to destroy Earth.
So I doubt he's a good guy.
Not that I understood it without translation I mean, but I thought I remembered that being in the Kanzenshuu translation of it.

I could have sworn it was something along the lines of "Won't you destroy the Earth for me?"

From Julian's translation:
It's kinda hard to tell if it's in a "Do you plan to...?" context or a "Can you please do this...?" context.ウイス「地球を破壊なさいますか?」
Uisu: [in honorific register] “Will you destroy the Earth?”

Ah, well. I guess we'll just have to find out.

You beat me in my digging back to it DragonBoxZTheMovies, but just for linking purposes I guess...this is where it was from.
http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2012/12/11/ba ... h-website/
It is a little more vague than I remember it being though. If he's speaking in an honorific context, that puts me in the mind of him asking for a favor maybe? So...it could go either way.
I definitely don't think Whis is a good guy, regardless of what this line says though. There's also that later creepy shot of him coming towards the camera. I don't trust the guy.

Wisu is a bad guy with good nature.CaBrPi wrote:Don't forget Whis has a line in the trailer where he asks Bills to destroy Earth.

He wants Birusu to destroy the Earth so he can Re-create it.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
For forum posts I've pretty much gone with "Bilus" because...I like how it looks (I am nothing if not scientific). Plus I still have a half-backed idea that his name may have something to do with Anubis and so the 'u' there might not be extraneous. I dislike "Bills" and "Virus" because I don't like spelling his name exactly the same as common English words, at least not until we get confirmation that his name is a pun on those things. I like to think "Bilus" works equally well (or equally poorly) for a variety of possible name origins. Whereas "Virus" only works if his name turns out to be based on "virus", and otherwise is misleading, so using it now is kind of a gamble. Overall though I think the Kanzenshuu policy of sticking with the direct Romanization "Birusu" until we get more information on his name origin is best, at least when trying to write anything authoritative.DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:By the way, what's everyone's preference for naming the new villains? I'm personally sticking with Birusu and Uisu, but I've seen Bils and Whis, Bills and Wiss, Bilus and Wisu and just Virus for Birusu
I'm constantly tempted to start spelling it "Vilus" just so I can call him "the vile Vilus", even though this promotes a mispronunciation of his name.
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?

I'm currently using "Birusu" and "Uisu" for similar reasons; it's just safer to stick with the direct romanization until I know what the actual name-puns are (no matter how much I want to call him "Virus", I've since decided not to just in case it turns out to be wrong).

Keeping it as simple as I can with one-syllable "Bils" and "Whis" until something official reveals otherwise.

Idea sparked by Kaboom's post just now.
*Suddenly wonders if the name-puns are "bells" and "whistles" in reference to the phrase "bells and whistles". Even though the phrase refers to extraneous features, placing it against characters who are supposed to be bringers of destruction could be something contrasting in a "piccolo, a high-pitched musical instrument" = demon king kind of thing.*

Come to think of it, have we even heard the names pronounced in any kind of audio? I re-watched the trailer, double-checked with Julian's translations, and not once in it are either of their names said...actually hearing the names and how their officially pronounced would help some too, wouldn't it?

I don't think we have, actually. O_O
Which is strange, but par the course for how secretive Shueisha's been with BOG info.
I recall hearing Birusu calling himself a "hakai-jin" (sp?) in the current trailer, but no name pronunciations. Even in the Heroes ads he's "that guy from the movie".

Japanese has pretty set pronunciation though. If you know how something's spelled in kana you pretty much have the pronunciation. It's not like English where you sometimes have to guess if you never's heard it said aloud. Of course, there's all the alternate readings for kanji, but that's not really a pronunciation issue per se (as mentioned, kana is used to specify pronunciation). And of course it doesn't apply to purple cat man and his katakana name.
Ah, speaking of alternate kanji readings...in compound words 神 is sometimes shin but sometimes jin (via the magic of rendaku). So 破壊神 could be Hakai-shin or Hakai-jin. I thought the various Jump features and whatnot have furigana specifying that it's Hakai-shin. It's interesting if they're going with Hakai-jin in the trailers.Chuquita wrote:I recall hearing Birusu calling himself a "hakai-jin" (sp?) in the current trailer, but no name pronunciations. Ah, so it's not as much of a mystery point as I thought then, just a curiosity. I'll have to find more straws to grasp at then. ^_^;
Oh, and to further clarify, I know you guys have been saying their names in the podcast, I meant from an official source on the movie though. But since it's apparently moot anyway...well, yeah, it's moot.

If all the backgrounds on the official website are pulled from the movie, I can't wait to see these outer space scenes. I just got my first look at what the "character" page background art looks like by itself; it's beautiful! Will definitely be using that as wallpaper in the future. *_*

Maybe Yamadera's going for a speech quirk?Herms wrote:Japanese has pretty set pronunciation though. If you know how something's spelled in kana you pretty much have the pronunciation. I've been wondering if Birusu's going to have any cat-specific quirks; depending on what they choose (if they choose something) it could be fun.

Suddenly, I want Bils to end all of his sentences with "nyan" or some variation thereof.

Maybe, if he's a quick learner like Boo, he can take a page from Neko Majin's book and fire back a Nekohameha towards Goku.
