Re: Instances of Fansubs Influencing Official Media
Well calling the Artificial Humans or Cyborgs "Androids" for one. I remember them being called Androids in every series summary I read as a kid, you know, when the series didn't get past Goky vs Butta and Jheese. And in some fan subs that I saw. This was years before they even got to the "Android Saga." If that didn't influence them, I can't think of why else they would improperly name them.

"Android" isn't a fansub thing -- it's a perfectly fine translation of "jinzōningen". It's Toriyama that could have chosen a better word for the concept he was going for.

Then went is everyone so against using that word for them? Whatever they may or may not be, if that's the translation, then why not use it? Even the Japanese subtitles for the series done by FUNimation's own Steve Simmons uses "Artificial Humans." I just find that funny.
Also, because all that was there was the series summary, anyone I've known pronounced "Dr. Gero" as "Dr. Jero." Could have also been followed by them.

Re: Instances of Fansubs Influencing Official Media
"Artificial Human" is a very literal translation of "jinzōningen" that happens to encompass all the different types that were created: cyborgs (#17), robots (#16), organic (Cell), etc.
"Android" is to "jinzōningen" sorta like "teleportation" is to "Shunkanidō". You can literally translate them out as "Artificial Human" and "Instantaneous Movement", but they have more colloquial, if you will, meanings.

This happen all the time for older series. The people who write the episode lists don't actually know Japanese, so they grab a translation from whatever source i available, be it official subs, fansubs, etc.takarajima wrote: Here's one possible (though not exactly "official") example -- I was looking up episode titles on Wikipedia, and some of the episode titles on Wikipedia's DBZ episode list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dr ... Z_episodes) seem to come a bit too close for comfort to the episode titles used on fansub tapes (or, their source). I don't have my official DVDs handy at the moment, so I haven't checked what titles are used there... Can anyone tell me?
I see a lot of those translations on the wikipedia list is taken from Funi's subs, too.

Cyborg, android, no Engrish. I think Toriyama just didn't have a fine grasp of the big E.

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.

The US-made game Buu's Fury came out before Funi has released DBZ movie 12, and so references fansub dialogue like Janenba being a mob boss and Gogeta's "I am the instrument of your destruction".
What's that have anything to do with his use of jinzou-ningen.Gokuden wrote:Cyborg, android, no Engrish. I think Toriyama just didn't have a fine grasp of the big E.

The ones that match FUNi's subtitles are probably all from me. It was pretty much all funsub translations at one point, and I was correcting them as the Dragon Box Z volumes came out. I guess I forgot to keep up with it... Hahaha.Adamant wrote:This happen all the time for older series.
