But that was earlier on in the franchise's life. My comment was in regards to the last year or two where Dragon Ball Z was lucky to get a twenty. Aside from the one or two incidents GT managed to stay in the same range the later Dragon Ball Z episodes did. If those numbers were enough for Fuji and Toei to put their heads together after 444 episodes and say "Oh, shit. We needs us some more Dragon Ball!" I don't see why they would be the overtly contributing factor to the ending of Dragon Ball GT.

Which I suppose is my coded way of implying both parties probably found themselves in a bit of a hole similar to what they would find themselves in later on with Dragon Ball Kai.

Lovely trailer, though I must say that I'm pretty disappointed that Chaozu isn't with the group at that scene where everybody were shown. He was with them at that shot with Shenlong and he's also mentioned in the Character section on the official website so I expected to see him at least more than Puar. I like Chaozu and he was a Z-fighter almost during the entire Dragon Ball series (as kids) and during the Saiyajin saga. He's also in a lot of group pictures of Z-warriors but from the looks of it, he'll probably have 10 seconds in this movie. Yeah, I'm judging from a trailer  so I hope I'm wrong.

I seen those before, thank you. From what I've seen that GT does not have as many merchandise compare to DBZ does. I think the last GT merchandise that I saw was that statue of SSj4 Goku vs. Adult Bebi (Funny that fight never happen in the show  ) which came out like four or five years ago.

Anyways, I saw the new trailer and it looks good as always. I think if they give us another trailer then I won't watch it since I feel like they give us enough clips already. I bet that they won't show off SSj God in any trailer or TV spot to keep it as a surprise. I'm pretty sure someone will do fan art of the design after the movie is release. Just like how everyone did fan art of the Clovefield monster after the movie came out.

In response to posts on the previous page:

You have to remember that it's really hard to compare TV ratings from the original run of the series to Kai. Once Fuji TV, and other stations, moved most of their animated programming out of the weekday prime time (~6 to 9pm) blocks, they no longer received ratings as high as they once were. What was considered a "good" rating back in the day is longer applicable to ratings we see these days. And as far as GT is concerned, I think you can tell a difference in ratings when you compare it to Dragon Ball Z. However, you can also see that people's interest was starting to wane near the end of the Majin Buu arc, but I definitely wouldn't say it was in the last two years. The TV ratings up through 1994 were pretty good, dropping here and there, but overall pretty damn good. The beginning of 1995 starts out pretty good too, but then drops off for a while until the end of the series. You do have to remember though that this part of the series took the most days off, for various reasons. I'd imagine that had at least some impact in the TV ratings.

But either way, like kei17 said, the Dragon Ball anime series had simply run its course by the time GT was underway and many general fans were just uninterested.

Just making my own DBZ movie marathon. Saw the first movie today..... and then the trailer. Oh God, how I miss the celluloid animation from 90's!!!
Frankly, this movie looks like hell, even if it's computer animation today, I saw lots of OAV's with better art. Gundam Unicorn looks way more budgeted than this.
Why is TOEI so cheap with everything? The movie looks like TV show.
Looks like they put the goverment money into propagation, merchandise and IMAX thing.

Hmm I think it's more the animation itself that's pretty go, not the actual still images. I mean in motion I think most of it looks pretty awesome, but when they're just standing still... yeah compared to what some movies did... it feels a bit cheap.

Agreed. The Majin Buu saga had the best animation in the whole franchise, in my opinion. It's hand drawn and it looks damn good.

BoG's animation looks better than what's been coming out in the videogames and recent OVAs, but it still doesn't compare to the hand-drawn animation of the 90s. Digital animation simply looks like crap to me. Shiny crap.

Ah yes, not to be ignorant, I mean the actual art of course, animation is pretty and more fluid nowadays than it was before. But the art is really bad and cheap.
Those Hokuto No Ken OVA's were marvelous for example, or recently, Saint Seiya Lost Canvas or Gundam Unicorn looks better than this.
It looks like drawn in Adobe Illustrator by pencil with one stroke set on everything.

The movement is most certainly very awesome and far better than any other style of animation DBZ in that regard.

Everyone's priority differs, but I preffer art to the movement.
This looks like the cheap Raging Blast 2 special with better animation.

For me the animation looks really good in some parts and then average and lazy in others. I can put up with it, but for the first DBZ release for many a year, you would have thought they'd put all their effort into making it look amazing.

Aside from tracksuit!Goku and Kaio, I do have yet to find a screenshot that I like enough to make my desktop background; but I partly chalk that up to the trailer having so many tiny clips edited together that it's difficult to pause it in time to get exactly what you want. Also the HD(?) versions on BOG's site won't let you fill up the whole screen, so it'd end up being blurry anyway.

I don't think this movie's got as big of a budget as an OP movie would, but I think it's more than the Precure All-Stars movies get (you want to see off-model characters, check those out compared to their regular October movies which are typically pretty good about staying on-model).

Even though I do agree that the Buu arc had some beautiful animation days (including Movies 12 and 13) I still feel optimistic about this film.

I don't like the animation either compared to the traditional one. It just looks way too bright and unnatural how they move. Everything's so squiggly. Just like the special on RB2, where the Kamehameha waves look fucking retarded, as if they were jump ropes made out of energy.

The movie seems to be a bit inconstant with the animation (compare the Boo or Vegeta/Bulma close-ups to the side pan with most characters in awe and Goku sitting on the ground). I don't remember Movies 12 or 13 being so inconstant, it's almost like the differences between episodes in the series... (as in different animation teams)

Long time lurker here, this discussion has sparked my interest.

On DBGT being a part of the franchise:

Personally, I think it's completely ignorant to deny Dragonball GT as a part of the franchise. All arguments stem from two points: Low quality and/or canon factor; both points, mind you, can be very same argued for the entire Dragonball animated series as a whole.

There is one thing to preserve the dignity and have respect for the original work by saying that Dragonball GT has no connection to it, which is understandable as the author of said work had barely any involvement in the process of creating Dragonball GT. Then there is another thing to be willingful ignorant about Dragonball GT's place in the series just because you're a staunch purist.

Here's some facts about Dragonball GT you have to take in consideration:
  1. Dragonball GT is NOT a failure of a series, in sales. It just never did as well as the original series both financially and critically. This isn't bad.
  2. TOEI still makes loads of money off Dragonball GT, especially in the Western market.
  3. Despite cries of non-canon, TOEI most likely considers Dragonball GT to be canon in the marketing sense. Why? Because continually in every form of Dragonball product that TOEI has some hand in, Dragonball GT is pretty much always recognized and represented somehow or another. This includes video games, merchandise, DVD releases, and everything. TOEI also probably considers the movies to be canon, especially Broly which is pretty much slapped into every Dragonball related merchandise ever.
  4. Most fans do not think Dragonball GT sucks. Matter of fact, most fans of the series think that Dragonball is a "crazy cartoon from Japan" and nothing more. Most fans, at large, view the entire trilogy of anime to be definitive Dragonball, whether we like it or not the sales of DVDs do not lie. Since all three series were shown together at large in the Western market, this is understandable.
  5. TOEI does not care about your opinion on the series and won't delete Dragonball GT from existence. What they care about is money, especially the money they get from the above fans I described and little kids.
The release of Battle of Gods, Dragonball Online, whatever is NOT going to erase Dragonball GT from existence, it's only going to solidify a more solid idea of what Akira Toriyama's intentions are for the history of the franchise. However, keep in mind to suggest there is a Dragonball canon is suggesting that Akira Toriyama and TOEI care enough to give Dragonball a canon, and I doubt either of them really do in the long run. Canon is synonymous with an official established guidelines and rules to what is legit and what isn't, basically, and AT/TOEI has yet to establish this with Dragonball as far as we're concerned.

On Battle of Gods:

Movie looks good, it's long running hour is pretty surprising though.

Don't care about SSJGod, and hopefully will look nothing like the garbage fanfiction SSJ forms.

I like to think everything is canon with a multiverse theory.

Just to be nitpicky, Chaozu is really only around for about half of the pre-Z era.
