I tend to be one of those fans that likes to defend Dragon Ball's lighthearted approach towards, well, everything, but even I can't help but wish they had been braver with the story and gone with a more darker theme. That doesn't mean they had to go full angst on us. Even One Piece can be down right dark when it wants to be and I don't think anybody complained about it.

After reading the spoilers, part of me did think "so...that's it ?" I can't really say what it was that I was expecting, but I guess it was a bit more than this . I'm not dissapointed and I will not form a definite oppinion on the movie without having seen it first, but I will have to say that it has not completely won me over with the story. And it's not even because my favorite character got his ass handed to him by chop-sticks (well, maybe a bit because of that too), it just doesn't feel as impressive as I had hoped. Oh well, maybe the execution and the animation will make up for it

I like the idea that this might actually be the beginning of the new series of something (movies? OVAs? series? not games, pls not games ) since the ending kind of suggested that, but we will first have to wait . Maybe they will become more daring with future projects.

I love Dragon Ball for what it is, and I would dislike if Toriyama or anybody for that matter were to make it "dark".

Depends how dark it will be? I won't mind having a show with a more serious tone. I think being dark does not mean it has be as dark as the Nolan Batman movies.

I would like it, but not as much as the usual Dragon Ball. It just wouldn't feel like Toriyamas DB to me. I completely understand what you mean though.

Well, Dragon Ball actually was dark, from the Kuririn's death in the Piccolo Daimao arc, to the finale of the Cell arc. It did had some gags here & there, but the tone was mostly serious.

This also worth mentioning. Dragon Ball does have some seriously dark moments too. Think of Cell and his flesh-absorbing tail. Or the anime adaptation of future Trunks' life.

I did think about that, but there was usually a character around to lighten the mood. Or the more serious moments wouldn't last long. Dragon Ball was usually light hearted, don't get me wrong I loved the more serious parts, and I could like it if they did it in the movie, but it would have to be executed right, and not be entirely serious IMO.

Or perhaps it has something to do with pure hearts - needing six pure hearted Saiyans, and that reaching Super Saiyan in-itself required a pure heart, so in this state they could be seen to be pure?? And the fact that Pan is unborn and not exposed to any environmental factors is also of pure heart, in essence a blank slate; tabla rasa??

So, you say that if a Saiyan isn't pure, but he is a Super Saiyan, he is considered as a pure-hearted because he already fulfilled the condition for the Super Saiyan form? Because that's what I thought as well.

As for the tone, I think that it seems to be nice that the film has taken a turn for light heartedness, it seems like it will sit as a nice blend of gags and quality fighting.

Now, I guess the topic of discussion this time is about how a "darker" Dragon Ball movie would have turned out?

Personally, the things I like best about Dragon Ball, besides the fights, is the silliness of it all. A darker Dragon Ball somehow doesn't fit right with me. I mean, sure, there have been moments in the series that can be considered dark. Someone mentioned Kuririn's death, and that's a great example, but how long did that dark moment last? Goku gets pissed, then gets beat down, and then meets Yajirobe, and the funny returns with him. The humor didn't leave for long, because you can't have an arc, or a movie where you try to explain what makes Goku a hero, or to see him suffering because of his inability to save the day or stuff like that. For me that's not Dragon Ball.
Yes, there's the story of Bardock, and the one with Trunks. And indeed they were quite dark. But here's the thing, Goku wasn't around at all in those stories was he? Because if you make Goku lose his cheerful attitude for too long, we'll have a Dragon Ball Evolution on our hands..., and we don't want that, do we?

But, I'm not opposed to the idea to give the other characters a more prominent role. Maybe have more enemies, so that the others warriors can fight as well, or a plot where the others are doing something very important while Goku is fighting, instead of looking up in awe as Goku fights. But at the end of the day, Goku should be the one to defeat the big bad one, because he's the main character, because Dragon Ball is his story, and because Toriyama already tried to make a Dragon Ball with Gohan at it's center, instead of Goku, and that did not turned out quite well at all...

Personally, I wouldn't mind Goku showing emotions other than cheerfullness, anger and slight variations of those two . A constant display of the same set of emotions makes a character kind of shallow and I KNOW this is the norm with Dragon Ball and the author stated that he likes to keep things lighthearted and upbeat, but I really believe going a little bit towards the serious side would not harm the story if handled properly. I think it would make the characters feel more fleshed out.

Call me crazy, but moments such as his one-sided fight with Radditz or the "Oh Shit, what have I done" moment in the Cell Arc were very Interesint for me because we had Goku shown in a different light. Here he was capable of fear, doubt, desparation, things we don't usually see with him.

That's the first full scene I've decided to watch; the flying-towards-Beers looked a little lazy, like they zoomed the characters instead of actually animating motion, but besides that, looks good.
