...I hate you Viz. I really, really do. :lol: Gaaaahh. I'll take a product that will last even if it has a few visual edits over an uncut book that's going to rip when I even look at it though. So that's still the VizBigs for me.

14:56:07 <bay|SC|Viz> A: For the 3-in-1s, that is unfortunately not taken into account, we don't have that in there...so yea, we don't have a way to showcase all the art

Viz finally gives us a proper release.

On the worst quality of paper. :cry:

I don't suppose it's getting a slightly updated translation on top of all this too is it? Drive that final nail in while you're at it Viz. :clap:

After all these years, they're finally going to stop splitting it up between "DB" and DBZ?" And they decide to implement this change for the release with the worst quality?

Never has good news hurt so badly. At this rate I'm fully expecting Viz employees to just start coming to our doors and beating us until we're blue in the face. It's the next logical step.

The entire run will be called "Dragonball" AND it's going to e uncensored?...

Welp, finally time for me to pick up English Dragonball manga. Would look nice next to my Kanzenban.

Honestly, I like to buy English releases just to support a good product (it's why I have every piece of Hellsing Media produced in BOTH Languages) and because of the censorship, I've never felt the Viz DB Manga has been a good enough product for my support. Now it deserves it.

I would definitely take a look at what the paper quality's going to be like before you become set on that DemonRin. You may still find yourself underwhelmed.

All right! I'm gonna buy this 95%.

Poor paper quality doesn't really bother me. I tend to be extremely delicate when reading books in the first place, so at least I now have a reason to be delicate. Being able to see through to the next page sucks, but not enough to keep me from throwing away money.

I collect American comic books, so I'm used to being very careful when reading comics. The "poor paper quality" doesn't seem like something that would phase me TBH.
Besides, the first book is only $15. That wouldn't be a huge loss if I decide not to get the rest.

No but seriously, what is this? I just got some of the expensive VizBigs, and they are planning on releasing this? That's just a cruel way to get my moneybags Viz. :(

I'll stick with my VizBigs. I've seen the 3-in-1 editions of other series, and as cool as uncensored art and the combined "Dragon Ball" title is, it's not worth the horrible paper quality and lack of color.

Using the Kanzenban cover art on top of it all is still just a big kick in the balls.

So this may have been covered, but why are the Evangelion 3-in-1s such a high quality product but the SJ titles (those money printers) are not? They seem to be classified as the same product and have the same pric (I think).

I just had a thought - chances are they're reverting to just 'Dragon Ball' for the entire thing not because it's 'proper' (though I'm sure they'll spin it that way), but because it makes their job of three-in-ones easier. Remember with the VizBigs they had to have the last one for 'DB' be a four-in-one and the last two of the 'DBZ' ones be two-in-ones? That was because of their division. Reverting it back to just one long series makes it 42 whole volumes instead of 16 and 26. 42 is divisible by 3, whereas neither 16 nor 26 are.

So...yay math?

Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting these. I don't care that it's all Dragon Ball, as I already have the first 16 volumes and only need Z. So it looks like I'll be hunting down the vizbigs instead because censorship doesn't really bother me.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Visual gags like Bulma's tits? Because that's the sort of things they censor. Here's a list of what they visually censor currently:

- explicit female nudity (they put a well drawn bra on the character or bath bubbles covering the strategic places and stuff like that, which still makes the scene work in its entirely, the reader doesn't get to see explicit female nudity, but all the sexual intent is still there and all of the characters reactions still make perfect sense, as does the situation; there's never a case where the censorship of nudity interfered with the logic of the scene);
- characters flipping the bird (they put the characters raising a fist or extending another finger instead; this is one of the cases where it does affect the scene unfortunately);
- Mr. Popo's lips (to prevent complains on racial profiling; his lips aren't important to anything so it doesn't affect anything at all);
- #17 killing a old man with a gun in the future (made it look like he killed him with his bare hand; shouldn't affect the scene but it makes the scene look a little weird, so it ends up affecting it);
- and a few thugs' weapons in the Buu saga are made to look less realistic and more laser-like (concerns with real weapons since those weapons are used to shoot Mr. Satan; doesn't affect anything in the slightest).

Those are all the visual edits currently in Viz (at least with the Vizbigs). In 42 volumes of manga and so many pages of it only that was edited and only a few cases of that actually affect the scene (flipping the bird and that situation with #17). I don't know to which gags you are referring but these are all of the edits.
I don't like any changes to Toriyama's original art, it just really bothers me. If Toriyama wanted the thugs to have lazer guns, they would have had them, and if he wanted Bulma to be wearing a bra, she would have. Would you be bothered if they changed Goku's clothes, and gave him a different hair cut? It wouldn't change the story, and it would have the same meaning, right?
As for the translation itself, there have been a few modifications but it has been mostly the same. They don't americanize the dialog nearly as much as you make it sound, really. They do it a little, its true, but it can't be compared to the dub or other stuff out there. Its simply not a literal translation, its a translation and a adaption, as it should be. It could be a little more literal and less adapted, its true, it would be better, but its still good and like I said, what it matters is that it conveys what was meant and implied.
I would like the translation to be as literal and direct as possible, and where a literal translation isn't possible in the case of things like puns on Japanese words, they should explain that in the notes.

So I suppose since you like the current translation so much, you don't have any interest in the new uncensored one they will be releasing? :D

This all very enticing but I don't think I'll double dip on these when the translation is just the same(presumably) and I already own the VizBigs. I do hope the series just being named Dragonball sticks but I doubt it. I'll wait for the eventual release of the full color comics even if it is only digital.

Yeah, not likely that we'll be getting a new translation, right? If they say it's uncensored, that probably means the art will be unedited, but if they aren't doing new translations for the color Z chapters running in Jump, I doubt they'll do so for these.

I think there might be something to this. I mean, I hate the DB/DBZ divide probably more than anyone, but even I think "just called DB for the entire run" is a weird and underwhelming selling point for a new release.

Though I understand the gripes, I find it interesting how certain people who have been wanting an uncensored release of the manga for years, are now backing out after Viz's announcement. Yeah... I get it, the lack of color and use of lower-quality paper suck. But we're finally getting it uncensored, it's almost worth the trade-off. I'm not too worried about the lower quality printing, because I actually take care of my shit. Years of collecting US comic books has prepared me for this.

Regarding the translation, just change Hercule back to Mr. Satan and Vegerot back to Vegetto/Vegito, and I'll be pretty satisfied. I hope they end up releasing this in its entirely and don't drop it, because we probably won't get another physical release of the manga again. The future is digital.
