Manga Question

Post by KameHouse » Sun May 07, 2006 11:17 pm

I have a question about the Japanese Dragonball manga.

I recently went into a local comic book shop, and in the back in a box I found whole lot of Japanese dragonball manga.

There was no price so I went and asked the guy how much each one was, and he said he was trying to sell them all as one and that he was selling them for $230.

He has volumes 1-41 and says he is missing Vol. 42 and Vol. 32. Also in the box are 4 DBZ Japanese movie books (they are in color).

So for the questions is that a good price for all those novels?

How hard would it be to get the 2 missing Volumes (as I am a completist)?

And how many color movie books were there?

I cant read Japanese but I think these would be really cool to look through and add to my collection.

I... don't know. Ha! But I do have a suggestion! You should look on amazon or ebay what the price of one japanese-language DBZ manga costs. From the sound of it, it sounds like a good price considering an english adapation that can be easily found in a local Barnes and Noble cost around 8 bucks a volume.

If you can't speak Japanese, atleast you'll have bragging rights, and a reason to actually learn Japanese and embrace Dragonball in it's original beauty!

Yes they will definately look good right next to all my other dragonball memorabilia! Learning Japanese would be cool but it looks hard.

No, it's way too much. You can get the complete series (vol. 1-42) in a nice little package on Amazon Japan for about $150 US plus $20 express shipping (I think it's $9 for regular shipping).

If you insist on buying from this guy, finding the missing volumes would be as easy as a quick visit to Amazon Japan. To search for DragonBall books just click on the tab that looks like this 本 and then enter ドラゴンボール into the search field. However, if you buy the books individually, you will have to pay full shipping ($9) PER BOOK. Much easier/cheaper to get the full set and pay the flat rate.
And how many color movie books were there?
20 originals, 10 remix volumes (2 per book).

If this guy has the original movie comics, then I suggest you go in and demand them, whether you get rest of the manga or not. They're quite hard to find, so just make yourself very clear that you want the movie comics, and not the others (and hope that he sells).

Good luck! :D

Wow, how bout that? Now I'm actually interested in this... except, I really can't read japanese...

It's not that I couldnt appreciate the manga's in japanese, thats not the problem.. the problem is that the page is in Japanese! And I can't flippn' tell which button is the 'BUY' button!

...This is like that twilight zone where the guy who likes to read steps on his glasses... or something like that! *Long, exajerated NOOO!*

Thanks everyone for the help.

I cant go with Amazon Japan as I dont have a credit card, but armed with the info I have here I can go to him and see if we can haggle a cheaper deal.

I know that he had a bunch of rare Star Wars figures that my friend bought and he was able to haggle to get a little bit of a cheaper deal with this guy.

Also the 4 movie books the guy has are from this page:

I really wouldn't suggest getting the manga unless you have that much money to spare and don't care. Have a bank account? Get a debit card. If not, just wait. Also, as DBW said, you should get those movie books, assuming you want them.

Well during luch break at work, I went into the comic book store to gather a little intell.

I got him to come down to about $200, I do have a debit card but I think its just easier to go ahead and get it locally rather then the timely process of Amazon Japan. Plus I get the movie books, I might go the Amazon Japan way to get the 2 missing volumes though.

And are there any movie books that are more rare than the others?

The 4 that this guy has is:
-- DragonBall Z Movie 8
-- DragonBall Z Movie 9
-- DragonBall Z Movie 6
-- DragonBall Z TV Special 2

That's actually a pretty decent price, especially since it includes the 4 movie books. I'd say as long as the books aren't literally falling apart, it would be a good buy.

For the original volumes, the older they are, the more rare they are. That's actually a pretty good collection there too. The first Brolli movie, the Bojack movie and the Trunks Special...definately good stuff!

I'd like to give my thanks too - I didn't know I could get the original manga straight from Japan for such a good price.

Within a month I will have them :D

I was concerned with which edition of Viz's books to get (damn cencorship) but if I have the originals too - I can instantly go back and see the original art.

I'm so pumped :D

Same here cant wait to get home and check out those movie books a little more.

I already have all the Viz mangas that are out as of this date so it will be cool to do some comparisons between the two.
