Favorite Aspect of DragonBall?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

What I love the most is the relationship between the characters and how well they're defined and progress as the series moves on.... and how they change, and how they all affect or portend what might be the key to defeating the next villian, or just pure character development alone, on that note.
That's because they've probably been watching or reading too much Bleach & Naruto :P

But seriously, I don't think it's fair to call them "distressingly cliched" & "moronically retarded" because were talking about a manga that started its serialization in 1984. Where at the time Kinnikuman was probably being serialized or already done. No, I'm not saying Kinnikuman is bad, but quite silly.

Seriously, it wasn't cliche for a character to get pissed and transform into a 'super' version of himself yet either :P

The characters (except Goku and Cell Saga Gohan, you can keep them).

Sorry if this is a necro-post, but this thread is only slightly older than week and I really want to answer this thread question.

My favourite aspect of DB is, like the others have said here already, are the characters, or rather, the relationships they have with each other.

You’ve got the mentor/student relationships, father/son, brothers, best friends, rivals etc. it's probably the best thing about the series and it’s a joy to watch them develop and they provide some great moments, but what I love more are the more subtle relationships that exists in the series like Gohan/Vegeta and Vegeta/Piccolo. They’re not obvious, but if you read through all of their interactions throughout the series, you see the relationships are there.

While it’s in Gohan’s personality to care for and to respect people (especially his elders) and to put his life on the line for them, Vegeta seems to grow to reciprocate those sentiments towards him. I think it was MajinVejitaXV who described them as distant uncle/nephew relationship, and think that’s fairly accurate. They save each others lives during the course of the series, while Vegeta even says sorry to Gohan for being a ‘liability’ during the battle with Cell, and seems genuinely disappointed in Gohan for his lack of progress between the Cell and Buu years (he comments on this on number of occasions), like a uncle would be of a nephew after showing so much promise as youngster. Hell, Vegeta even expresses remorse when he thinks he’s indirectly responsible for Gohan’s death, and expresses even more disgust at Buu for actually killing him (as he thinks).

Then on the other hand, Vegeta and Piccolo are like the two gangstas of the series, and while they threaten to fight each other a few times, they also give each other a number of verbal nods of respect (just before Freeza and his father arrive on earth, Vegeta more or less demands that everyone suppresses their Ki while immediately saying: “The Namek’s already done it, now there’s a warrior”, while Piccolo gives Vegeta a number of props throughout the Cell saga) My favourite scene between the two of them (and just one of my favourite scenes throughout the whole series period) is just before Vegeta blows himself up against Buu, he asks if he’ll see Goku again, and Piccolo essentially says ‘I’m going to tell you straight: no, you won’t even exist.’ and Vegeta is just like “Oh well.” I love that scene, just love the straight shooting between the two of them; no arrogance, distain or either of them being condescending, just real talk like the men they are.

About the Piccolo/Vegeta thing; my favourite interaction between those two is after Cell is killed.

Everyone flies off, leaving only Piccolo and Vegeta are left.

Piccolo says to him, "I'll lend you a hand, Vegeta."

Vegeta then replies, "Mind your own buisness. Just go. I don't need your help."

Piccolo then smirks, and flies off.

Vegeta then curses Kakarrot for just dying like that.

Then he just hovers away, vowing: "I'll never... fight again..."

Priceless. :D

Oh, there's so much I love about the series, but overall, it's character development and character relationships. The action is awesome but I think what drew me to Dragonball Z, and later to the other two series, was the emotional attachment the characters developed. I _cared_ about these characters!

Gohan's development was easily my favorite development. We see him go from a frightened and pampered child to one that'll stand up to pretty much anything if it's important to him. I have to say one of my favorite moments in the manga is when ChiChi tells Gohan he doesn't need to go and revive Piccolo and he cuts her off with a "BE QUIET!" I probably reread that panel about five times because I'd been waiting for SOMEONE to say that to her...

The relationships are what keep me locked to the series though. Goku and Gohan's is easily my favorite, especially in the later Cell Games saga. I loved how Goku could be a buddy at some times but at other times a father. His little speech to Gohan in the Funimation dub when he's fighting against Cell remains one of my favorites: WOULD YOU STOP ATTACKING YOURSELF? I don't know where you got it in your head that there's something wrong with you because there's not!"

There were also relationships that were more subtle I loved. I saw a little of the Gohan-Vegeta one but I tended to see Kuririn and Gohan's as a older friend/uncle to nephew relationship, especially during the Namek saga. I haven't seen that uncut yet, unfortunately...soon! There was even a little bit of aunt/nephew relationship between Gohan and Bulma I thought. I always thought it pretty neat that the two Goku seemed closest to in his childhood became 'friends' for his son too!

Overall, I think the characters were what really _made_ that series.

My favorite thing about DragonBall is the theme of overcoming incredible odds. No matter how hopeless things seemed the Heroes always found a way to win. It's a message that translates well into the real world. You can overcome almost anything if you just dont give up and try your absolute hardest. Also i love the characters because they are just so darn memorable. You really get attached to them because you see them grow up, mature, get stronger, fall in love and start families. :)
It is impossible to improve upon perfection.

The unique art style, the characters, and the long, LONG, sweeping epic storyline. DB starts on a relatively small scale, but then ends up involving the entire universe!
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
