The key trait to "Saikyo no Gohan"

Post by Duo » Thu Jun 15, 2006 2:36 pm

The first time I read Volume 41 and Gohan was shown powering up into his Ultimate stage, I noticed that something about his face was different, but I couldn't ever really put my finger on it.

However, recently, someone pointed out a detail about Super Saiyans that I never noticed before. Their eyes are drawn with a set border every time (in the Manga), whereas a normal Saiyan sometimes only has a half-border (excluding Vegeta, who always has a full outline).

Here are a couple pictures (thumbnailed - click to enlarge) to illistrate. Pay very close attention to the outline around the eyes.

Image Image

I think my point is a bit more obvious now.

Well, when Gohan recieves the Elder Kaioshin Power-up, his eyes do the same thing. They are, from then on out, always fully outlined.

I also remember it being argued, much of the time, that the Elder Kaioshin power-up "wore off" after Gohan died and came back, or after the 10 years passed. Being a debate-fanatic at heart, I decided to check every single image of Gohan after recieving the power-up. His eyes stay the same. Until the very last frame he appears in.

That's pretty much all I got to say about that. I thought it was cool to finally see something that un-obvious. Or maybe I'm just blind...

I hate to burst your bubble, but your not the only one who's noticed that. ^^; I didn't realize that he had the full border eyes the entire time after the Kaioshin power up, but now that you mention it I remember. :D

I thought his hair was also slightly different, though. Pointier maybe? :?

I just thought that the whole thing was hugely obvious, but that could just be me. I suppose I would notice more quickly since I actually draw these characters.

Well, if you look at some of Toriyama's title pages for his chapters, he drew "Mystic" Gohan with more circular eyes at one point. However, you could just say that it was because Toriyama drew that title page with circular eyes.

I guess I noticed this whole eye change thing when I saw pictures from the Cell Saga when Goku and Gohan were hanging out as Super Saiyajinns. You could assume that their eyes were circular and not as square because the two were trying to make SSJ as comfortable as their base form.

And even "Saikyô". Or "Saikyou". Or "Saikyoh".

Then again, he's generally called "Ultimate Gohan" (in English) in Japan, so it's a moot point...

Those are good points. Whenever a Saiyajin becomes Super Saiyajin, they always have complete borders around their eyes, even when their eyes are circular.

I actually never liked how Goku, Gohan, and all the rest had borders around their eyes with circular eyes as Super Saiyajin. It just looks so unnatural. :x

It's suppossed to be unnatural, it's ment to show 'evil'.

Was it Bejita who brought this up before? I can't remember. Who knows the difference between a SSj aura and a SSj2 aura?

Well, I remember that in the JP version of the anime (not so sure about the manga) when Gotenks goes SSJ3, he says something like "Woah, I look so different that people would think that I'm evil... kinda like you, eh Piccolo?" If you're wondering, this is right when he transforms and takes a mirror from out of nowhere to look at himself. (ep 260- Feeding Frenzy/FUNi episode 245)

I'm guessing that that little line was an inside joke based on a Toriyama interview when he describes the SSJ and complains at how evil it looks (I don't remember, but I think this was mentioned somewhere on DaizEX.0

The FUNi dub just has him say something like "You could barely notice me."

Erm... I really don't wanna go into this debate. :?

Depends on the person, but generally the characters have blue lightning when they power up (though not always, but this trait isn't part of the first SSJ level.) Hair changed slightly, spiking "up" more, the most obvious difference being Gohan when he fights Cell (and Bojack in movie 9.)

Many argue that in the Buu Saga, Goku, Gohan and Vegeta's hair never change from SSJ1 to SSJ2, but there are differences. Gohan's hair seems to get a little longer, some of Goku's bangs go up, and the top spikes of Vegeta's hair "uncurl" from the center and points straight up.

Don't ask me about Vegetto, Gogeta or Gotenks, though. :?

[edit] Oops, sorry Desire. Didn't realize what you meant.

Crap, let's kill this before it goes 'Superman' style.

I wasn't asking "what's the difference between a SSj aura and a SSj2 aura?"

I ment "there's a member here who knows the difference between a SSj aura and a SSj2 aura, who is it?"

I am the same way, and i think goku's kids, chi-chi, and krillin have the unconnected borders.

I thought at least one person would find this remotely interesting...oh well. Can't win them all.

I wasn't claiming to know Japanese, but was just wanted to make the thread title interesting. Sorry for forgetting an "I"?

The difference between the original Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 Aura? More Pictures...

I can get more if you need me to - but I think this illistrates the point. Literally.

I also looked at Gohan's eyes after the Buu saga to see if the full eye-borders were still present; they were, even in GT.

Personally, I like that look on Gohan; it shows that he's finally grown up now. He's through playing games. He's gone beyond any other Saiya-jin. He bitches even harder.

I always took it to mean that he recieved as much power from Ro Kaio-shin, he's as strong as a Super Saiya-jin in his normal form.

He's leaner, meaner, and ready to kick some pink, blobby ass. 8)
