Episode #0033 (
download MP3)
46:46; 64 kbps, mono; 21.4 MB
Episode #0033! VegettoEX, Julian, and Meri discuss DVD delays and the strange happenings with Atari. We also continue with our quasi-serious discussions on aspects of DBZ; this week, it's the shift from comedic-action to comedic-action with intense sci-fi elements! DBZ ABCs, Meri's Top 5 "Piccolo Saves Gohan" moments, and your e-mails! Referenced sites:
Whee! Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to
godofchaos for hosting the monumental
*thirty-three* episodes, now.
That's right, thirty-three episodes under our collective belts, now! And speaking of "Belt", continue to get more familiar with the song. It will pop up again in the near future. But that's pretty much entirely irrelevant to this podcast episode, so let's move along. Nothing to see here.

Thanks for answering my question guys &, yeah that pretty much clear things up a lot for me. As far as the sci-fi elements that were prominent in the later story arcs from Dragon Ball (Dragon Ball Z), interestingly, that's one of the elements that detracted me from the anime series in its early Ocean Dub syndication run...(insert shock). I'm just not a big fan of sci-fi, however time travel is one of the very few sci-fi elements I do indeed enjoy (which is why I did not became a more dominant fan till later on the Cell story arc, alas, peak of popularity &, coincidentaly, was the period of time I discovered I had Cartoon Network!). Now going back reading the original manga by Akira Toriyama, I truely enjoy & appreciate the series even more than ever. I have to totally agree with EX's testament of the transformation of the manga & anime series which, in my book, makes this the best podcast I've heard to date.
Keep up the great work guys.

With the time travel thing, it's similar to the X-Men saga "Days of Future Past". Especially with the ending of not changing anything in the home timeline, but keeping the main timeline from going down that path.

About Son Goku wearing weighted gi, I believe that it isn't weighted anymore. If you remember in the manga (well the Viz translation) and japanese anime (as far as I know) during the fight with Freeza and Son Goku, Tenshinhan asks Kaio-sama if he is still wearing his weighted clothing. Kaio-sama replys with something like "what he is wearing is durable, but not heavy". I took out of that line that Son Goku doesn't wear weighted clothing anymore. The reason I believe he doesn't anymore is because he is past the point of its usefulness as a training device. It doesn't build up his speed anymore (its intended purpose). He is so much more advanced in DBZ (well most of it) in terms of strength, that Kami's training device is rendered useless.

Hey Mike, I figured that you might not have immediate access to the DVD where Piccolo arrives to fight Freeza so I took a screencap for you from my R2 DVD:
Here's a link to a 640x480, screencap from said DVD in case you may want to reduce the quality or anything:

Hope this helps. :O

In reference to the JoJo characters, Julian is quite correct. Dio's infamous screech is pronounced "RIIIIIIIIII".

I wanted to point out the "Days of Future Past" comparison, Super Sonic. ;_;

Oh, I'm well aware of how it would be pronounced. I find it funnier to rhyme it with "Why"

.
Also, we could have gone on for another hour or so with time-travel explanations and Meri's
X-Men comparisons and analysis. But that's for another episode

Ooooh... "Time-travel explanations", huh? Lookin' forward to it!
Oh yes, and what I
really wanted to say was that the speech at the near end of the topic was...
awesome.
VegettoEX, you're a man with a passion for Dragonball, eh (I'm not sure if I've already said that, but...

)? I couldn't do the speech better myself. Well, maybe...
I haven't finished listening, so I'm anticipating the conclusion of the RRA contest. If there is one.

It's not in the show; it's not really a podcast contest. I haven't finished it up yet, but I'm getting to it. It just hasn't been the highest priority.

Ooh, interesting podcast. I'm at the end of Meri's Top 5, and I was slightly disappointed that Kuririn saving Gohan in Movie 10 wasn't mentioned. I mean, I know it wasn't Piccolo, but the guy was wearing a Piccolo outfit, and he saved Gohan in a Piccolo-esque way!
Anyways, keep up the good work!

Oh and let's add a guy with stretchy arms, and give him a bandana that looks EXACTLY LIKE VENOM'S HEAD :B
Aw, no e-mail from me this time. Oh well. I totally agree with the comment about people's misunderstanding of DBZ's plot. As great of an explanation for that that would be, there are just too many people in America that just get one taste of something and then INSTANTLY think they have a reason to knock it down. The same goes for Naruto and One Piece unfortunately. Sadface :<
Really liked the topic for this episode, the various references to other series, and the Piccolo-saves-Gohan list. #1's definetely my favorite, but I'm surprised nobody made a "LET THAT CHILD ALONE..." reference for the Movie 3 instance XD

Did anyone else notice that Mike and Meri said the same lines from previous podcasts?
"VegettoEX is a FUNi loving sellout!" was said in episode 19 and
"Let's throw rocks at him!" was said in episode 17, and both were said by the same person as before.
Maybe I should lay off the podcasts for a while... I'm starting to know too much

This looks like a most interesting episode.
I unfortunatly will not be able to hear it, due to the fact that I am currently at camp.
Satelite connection in the middle of nowhere... go figure
I will have to listen to this as well as the next five podcasts as soon as I get home.
There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

Hm, I can't remember if it was this week or last week's Podcast regarding Coola's metal form's name, but I've found something of interest.
According to the recent games, Coola's name is spelled out as メタルクウラ in his metal form in
Bukuu Ressen. o_o Translating that comes out as Metal Coola.
Just thought I should point that out, as you guys mentioned the Daizenshuu simply called him Coola. Though, I guess it doesn't help that the game spells his name out in English as Coora.

Nah, daizenshuu 6 indeed says メタルクウラ. I'm just an idiot.
