They seemed overly harsh on it simply because it was Dragonball and because of the cel-shading. Must a conformist's life be so negative?Kula wrote:Official UK PS2 Magazine review of Super DBZ (5/10)...

"While [Tekken or Sould Caliber] were devised as figting games, DBZ is based on an anime series, and it shows"
Awesome. He doesn't sound like a fucktard at all.

There were three or four sentences in the Budokai 1 review that would get him banned from this forum. I guess some magazines don't have grammar rules

"Dragon Ball doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Soul Calibur III and Tekken 5."
Because all three games have the same kind of combat system and can be accurately be compared without any kind of bias, am I right guys? 8D
Here's where it gets more hilarious.
"This mediocre beat-'em-up series does nothing to justify their continued existence, either. Pick a figher, fight in a series of timed rounds, throw down a few combos, and unlock bonus characters for completing challenges."
Just about every fighting game these days is like this. The only difference with some games are either their fighting systems and/or additional features like Create a Character. Soul Calibur III is pretty much what was described there with a CaC mode and a story mode for said character.
So really, it seems like all they're doing is bashing the game because it has Dragon Ball Z in the title. And what's with the comparisons between it and the Soul Calibur and Tekken series'? Yeesh. Apparently the idea of playing a fighting game that isn't Street Fighter, Tekken or Soul Calibur turns them off.

You know, you said everything I was thinking. Thank you for that wonderful read. It is amazing how bias magazines can be (just look at Revover magazine, they are a living contradiction).Tsukento wrote:"Dragon Ball doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Soul Calibur III and Tekken 5."

Those thoughts came to my mind just like it did also to yours and DevilsAlwaysCry's. However, unlike you, I couldn't put it into a meaningful post like you did. I completely agree with what you're saying.Tsukento wrote:"Dragon Ball doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Soul Calibur III and Tekken 5."

My...GOD. Those have to be the worst, most biased, most uninformative reviews I've ever seen.
They basically spend like half the already super-short article either explaining DBZ or complaining about how many games of it are out and how it's not going away, then the other half comparing it to Tekken and Soul Calibur, and saying it's a crappy game.
There's maybe one or two sentences relating to the game, but it's mostly stuff that isn't all that important in determining gameplay quality. Like the Budokai Tenkaichi article, it spends a sentence commenting on the loading times, when they could've spent it saying something that affects the actual gameplay.
They don't go into detail at all. Probably 'cause they can't. I mean, how many ways can they say, "I hate DBZ". Clearly, they're not judging these as GAMES, right?
And that's for ALL the reviews; I wasn't just talking about Super DBZ's.
They're all the same. That's pretty pathetic.

I stopped buying that SHITTY magazine because they were always putting Dragonball down. They gave Budokai 3 a 6/10!Kendamu wrote:They seemed overly harsh on it simply because it was Dragonball and because of the cel-shading. Alright guys, are you ready to help me send a complaint letter? Please. I know some of you guys can contribute, and add some powerful sentences.
And by the way, Budokai 3 is almost as good as Soul Calibur 2. No kidding. I have to admit Budokai 1 and 2 weren't that good, though. Maybe those 2 games put the writers off before playing B3.
DAMN THEM!

I stopped listening to reviews a long time ago, especally the ones mentioned in that magazine. I hear they gave Makai Kingdom, an excellent game, 5/10. And by the looks of it, they generally only give good reviews to the big named, over hyped games. I could go into other things that I've seen them do but this isn't the place for that.
Anyway, I've ordered my copy of Play.com which mentioned it would be available on the 7th of July. However they haven't recieved stock yet so I don't have my copy (and doubt I'll be getting it until end of this week/start of the next). I'm looking forward to playing it. Unlike some game playing Brits, some of the ideas in that game generally sound interesting.

I considered writing a letter to them about their reviews of the DBZ games, but they would probably write some sarcastic comment. Besides, they're entitled to their opinion.
Their review got me thinking 'Maybe the game ISN'T so good after all'. I'll admit, part of me liking it was due to being a Dragonball fan, but Budokai 3 is a damn good game. It was pretty much the only game I played from christmas, 2004 to mid 2005.

Yeah, a lot of big time gaming magazines (like EGM, they think they are God himself) make sarcastic remarks instead of answering the consumers questions.Kula wrote:I considered writing a letter to them about their reviews of the DBZ games, but they would probably write some sarcastic comment. Just a few minutes ago I just went back and played Sparking again hoping to get some hardcore fighting action that might hold me over until I can buy Super DBZ. After hearing and reading reviews of people who have actually played the game *cough*podcast*cough* and being reminded of games such as the Super Budoten series and Ultimate Battle 22, I suddenly was no longer feeling satisfied with Sparking as it felt way too cinematic for a fighting game.
I guess I'm going to have to drag out my copy of Ultimate Battle 22 and find my PS1 memory card until Super DBZ hits the States. I'm being spoiled by nolstalgia of Street Fighter games and Dragonball Z fighting games of previous game generations. Gah!
I think I'm going to sell Sparking to get some money for Super DBZ.

People have given Budokai 3 even worse than that. I've seen it go as low as 4/10. For a list of review scores, you could check out gamerankings.comSteven Perry wrote:I stopped buying that SHITTY magazine because they were always putting Dragonball down. Nothing for Super DBZ yet though.
PSM is a magazine I used to read, and really liked. They also gave Budokai 3 a 6/10, but, I'm not sure if they're biased against it like some of the others seem to be. I mean, they did give Shin Budokai a 7.5, and Budokai Tenkaichi an 8.
I didn't read the actual reviews, just the final score. I haven't actually picked PSM up for a few years now, and I'm not sure if it's still the PSM I once loved.

Yeah, PSM is an independent magazine that generally has different reviewers that seem to have different opinions. I think Budokai 3 didn't get such a decent review because the person who did the review was not the same guy who did the review for the past 2 games. I think he was more of a newcomer to the Budokai series of games & he hasn't generally played the past 2 games well enough to appreciate the 3rd one & I'm also assuming he's not generally a fan from what I've read of his article.
