XDDDDDDDD
Well there is a part of me that's insane in that I want to construct and wear a costume from a 20 year-old anime tv series geared at 10-12 year old boys. But that's beside the point.
To quote myself from earlier:
I'm really determined to make this a "first class" cosplay so hopefully I can accomplish that, which is why I'm starting my planning on it over a year in advance.
And that really is what I'm striving for.
I agree that there's some really badly done Dragonball cosplay out there, but there's been some really incredible cosplay too. Partially why I want to cosplay this is because I want be one more cosplayer that adds to the "good cosplay" pile for DB. The show gets enough flack as it is and accurately done cosplay that makes people stop and go "cool" will hopefully help reduce that. If you think all cosplay is shoddy then I suggest you visit the "cosplay.com" website and browse the galleries of the members. Yes there's ones that aren't that great, but there are also a lot that are incredible.
As for things like Zangya's hair and the blue skin. Yes that's a challenge but there is such a thing as "modifying" or "styling" wigs. Most wigs out there don't look like anime hair. It's a give-in that cosplayers will have to style them somewhat. There are even people that you can pay to do wig commissions that are very skilled at making accurate wigs of anime character hairstyles. For the blue make-up, that's quite easy. You run into problems when you use bad products and don't match your colours. There *are* brands of make-up, bodypaint, and facepaint you can get that are top quality. "Ben Nye Make-up" for instance has been used in the theater world and film world for decades. Tons of professionals in the industry use it daily.
There are people such as myself who cosplay for a hobby not just because we're anime fans. We also enjoy dressing as someone else for a day. Also there's the challenge of accurately bringing a 2D character to real-life 3D. It's a great feeling when that's been successfully done. I'm planning to debut this costume in late 2007, plenty of time to work faithfully on it. That's how serious I am about making it a success and trust me, you won't see me wearing it until it's up to my standards, and I'm a perfectionist. I'm definitely not just going to jump into some baggy pants and a vest, slap on some blue powder, and wear a cheap orange Hallowe'en wig bought at the "dollar store". Personally, just the thought of that gives me the willies. >>
