Dying While Dead

Post by Iyouboushi » Tue Jul 18, 2006 12:01 am

So back in `98 or `99 I remember reading or hearing that if a character died while he/she was already dead that they would cease to exist (disappear completely). Then along came a ton of people who told me "no, they just go back to the afterlife. The whole disappearing thing was a bad translation/just a rumor" or, alternatively, "nothing happens, they're already dead."

Well, I was playing Budokai 3's Dragon World for the second time with Gokuu (yes, I'm a few years behind on the times) and noticed that in one of the alternate paths Gokuu tells Vejita to be careful about dying again since he would "disappear" if he died while dead. So now I'm confused. Which is it? Is this a rumor/bad dub line/mistranslation?

And if it's in the manga and I've just simply forgotten (which is always possible) can someone tell me which tankoubon it's in? Likewise, if they mention it in the show, which episode (Japanese #, please, or if you're unsure you can describe which ep it is and I can find out what # it is).

Thanks!

In DragonBall Z, if someone dies and is then killed again, they cease to exist all together. That's what Goku says to Vegeta.

In movie 12, it would seem that if the dead crossed over to the living world and then were destroyed, they would just be sent back to the after life, but with nothing to stop them from leaving again until Janemba was destroyed.

DragonBall GT seems to take a few liberties with the rules; all the villians that escape from hell are somehow considered ressurected, which is why they are back in the check-in line after being killed.

Cell and Freeza, whom remained in Hell, claim that since they are already dead they can't be hurt. As to whether this is because the rules in Hell are different from other dimensions, or just because Toei were re-writting the rules is uncertain.

Episode #281, where Vegita stalls for SSJ3 Goku.

It's in DB vol 42 (DBZ vol. 26). I'm not exactly sure what chapter it's in, but it was when Vegeta said that he will stall for Goku. Then Goku says that he shouldn't because if he happens to die while fighting, he'll be gone forever and will never be able to be wished back.

Canonically, if you die while dead, you disappear forever.

Non-canoncially, it gets very messy. Aparantly you can regenerate, or go back to Lord Enma, or respawn instantly, and so on and so on.

Just to add another point, perhaps it works differently with Hell than for other parts of the afterlife. It seems that every time I've seen (that I can remember) a group of people in Hell (deceased villians, etc), they don't have halos or anything, whereas people everywhere else does.

What? Are you sure? I could have sworn Freeza and Cell had halos, along with the Ginyu force.

Ah, good job Toei: make the mats the same colour as the halos. Noone will miss that.

While we're on the subject of death, why do those that go to Heaven have those little "ghost-tails" for legs and those sent to hell keep their full bodies?

Any idea?

I think most of that was non-cannon but i've never read the Buu saga manga so i'm not completely sure.

According to Toriyama, when a person dies they lose their bodies and become spirits, except for Goku and others who were martial artists/heros in life.

In filler episodes when Toei wanted to show dead villians, they were given their bodies so that they would actually have something to fight against. Then Toei kinda flip-flopped later, showing Chi-chi, Bulma, Videl, and Dabra as spirit people.

Okay thanks.

Another thing, am I the only one to find it funny that those in Hell have halos?

I know it's a symbol of death but. . .still. . .

There was also a bit in DragonBall with some kinda Mos Eisley Cantina in Heaven - lots of strange creatures with bodies.
