What form of martial arts do the Z fighters use?
I was interested in taking a martial arts class, I could not decide what form I wanted to study. Then I thought of DBZ and wondered; what form of martial arts do the Z fighters study?
As I am not very knowledgeable about martial arts I leave the question to you and cant wait to participate in the debate.

Well there aren't that many fighting styles I could mention in The Dragon Ball Universe. I remember in the early days when little Son Goku was training under Kame-senin, he was teaching him the way of his style or the Turtle style which consists of the typical wearing weights (or Turtle shells on their backs) while doing some tasks. I think it's a fighting style, but it could be just a way of training. Even before then, Son Goku already knew some Kung-Fu & then later on in the manga, when he was looking for Bulma in the city, he decides to fight a martial artist for some money. As their fighting, the martial artist notices he knows some Kenpo.
I think its safe to say most of the martial artists in early Dragon Ball know Kung-Fu. They're just separated by houses or styles (Turtle, Crane, etc.,).
Much later on in the series, when Vegita appears, I think the fighting styles don't really matter up to that point.

I think I quote Bruce Lee here:BrollysKin wrote:But what would it be if it were put into a modern style?
Most of the characters deliberately use as many (or looking at it another way, 'as few') styles as possible. Limiting oneself to only one style breeds predictability.Bruce Lee wrote:A martial artist who drills exclusively to a set pattern of combat is losing his freedom. He is actually becoming a slave to a choice pattern and feels that the pattern is the real thing. It leads to stagnation because the way of combat is never based on personal choice and fancies, but constantly changes from moment to moment, and the disappointed combatant will soon find out that his "choice routine" lacks pliability. There must be a "being" instead of a "doing" in training. One must be free. Instead of complexity of form, there should be simplicity of expression.

Wow... you're gonna study martial arts? Train under my Unicorn clan!
Anyway, I remember Raditz having a particular style in Budokai Tenkaichi... which turned out to be the same method of fighting he used in the first episodes. He stands on one leg, and does some fancy kicking moves. I have no idea what the style is called, though.
Heh... I don't know how far you'll get by just standing on one leg.
In developing the martial art of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee worked hard to quantify and formulate a philosophy for self-defense and personal growth. His formula was:
1) Research your own experience
2) Absorb what is useful
3) Reject what is useless
4) Add what is specifically your own
In order to make myself look cool, I'm gonna quote Bruce Lee (like Desire
):
Or, you could do what Broly does: thrash about in a blind rage. That works.

Learning is definitely not mere imitation, nor is it the ability to accumulate and regurgitate fixed knowledge. Learning is a constant process of discovery – a process without end.

Holy crap, I didn't see that part.BrollysKin wrote:I was interested in taking a martial arts class...
Okay, don't start off trying to emulate Bruce Lee - start slightly smaller.
I suggest looking for what kind of classes are offered in your area, that's the best place to start (I took Tae Kwon Do in a pre-school).

That all depends on what you wish to emphasize. Tae Kwon Do is mainly a form which involves kicking, Karate is mainly hands, and Judo is throwing. Those are the only ones I've dabbled in (I'm a college student, so my budget isn't exactly high enough to allow for a $150+/month class), and all were fun but distinct.BrollysKin wrote:I was interested in taking a martial arts class, I could not decide what form I wanted to study.
I'd read about all of them and visit the local schools. Most will allow you to come to a free class or classes, to see how you like it. You can use that to determine which you like most to start out with, and go from there. Personally, I liked Tae Kwon Do, and my instructors came from varied backgrounds (Tae Keon Do, Kung Fu, Judo and Jeet Kun Do were some of the styles they had attained black belt or equivalent in) so they implemented many styles into their instruction.
Anyway, good luck and have fun!

I took Tae Kwon Do back in high school when DBZ was the new hotness on CN. My other friends took karate, kung fu, hapkido, etc...
It was a lot of fun for me, but I couldn't continue after getting my black belt since I was starting college and needed to work.
DBZ was definitely a great motivator for helping me through the final lessons.

I think of it as 'Saotome-ryu'.
That is pretty much the fighting style of most of the characters. They don't stick to a particular form of martial arts, they simply do what the situation calls for. I'm quite sure each person has a distinctive style (look at the differences in battle stances between Goku and Vegeta), however the rule is in DBZ is that anything goes!
Quite similar to the opinions of Steven and Desire, actually. Bruce Lee had his own style, incorporating many elements from different martial arts.

First of all, good for you!
I've been studying martial arts for 13 years.
Second, you should never even try to associate Dragonball with real-world martial arts. It's just not present. The only real training witnessed in Dragonball was Goku and Kuririn under Roshi and that wasn't even martial arts training... that was milk delivery, farming and swimming.
Other than that, training in DBZ is randomly jumping around and punching with various methods of weight training. Whether it's the turtle shells, weighted gi's, gravity chambers or excessively heavy swords...
One wonders if the Z-fighers even know any real martial arts at all...

I'd recomend a form of Okinawan Karate', which is usually very novice friendly and, in my experience, is very defensive while incorporating effective punching, kicking, and breaks/grabs.
Then again, I study under the top ranked Karate' sensei in my state, so it may be different for other schools.
As the previous poster said, don't look to DragonBall for real life Martial Arts. It simply isn't present. Though, weight training isn't a bad idea at all, so long as you don't bulk your muscles up so much that they get in the way. A slim build is much more effective than a Broli build.

I claim ignorance in overall knowledge of Jeet Kun Do, aside from it being the brainchild of Bruce Lee (and being used by Spike Spiegel in Cowboy BebopBoxerGloves wrote:From what I know, Jeet Kun Do is one of those martial arts that don't believe in belts, or anything that shows the rank and/or proggress of the student.

He named it after Dragonball because he's a fan of the series... that doesn't mean it actually has anything to do with Dragonball. Their's also a microprocessor called the 'Freescale Dragonball'... doesn't mean you can summon Shenron with it.ericscarface wrote:Just to let you know...... there is a system call Dragon Ball Jiu Jitsu. I tried my best spelling guys.

Strangely on the same subject, I looked him up on Wikipedia, and found this...
Newton's views on the martial arts evidence the influence of such classic martial texts as The Book of Five Rings, The Art of War, and The Hagakure. Not to be overlooked, of course, are popular influences such as the Star Wars films, and the aforementioned Dragon Ball Z manga and anime, from which Newton draws not only the name of his fighting style but his post-fight "Kame Hame Ha" celebration as well. Newton charmingly lists his heroes as Muhammed Ali, Albert Einstein, and Batman.
I used to believe that though. I spent a long time looking for a cell phone with that chip. >.<Their's also a microprocessor called the 'Freescale Dragonball'... doesn't mean you can summon Shenron with it.
Heh, They never state what kind of real martial arts styles Goku and the others use in Dragon Ball. Just assume it is what Roshi says. Then of course, by DBZ, it is simple punches and kicks that look pretty.
Or Broly's blind rage thrashing. That works too.
The styles used in Dragonball are probably closest associated with Kung Fu or some other type of Chinese martial art.
I would suggest either that or Kenpo. Both use a wide variety of manuevers as far as typical martial arts goes.

Just remember, everytime something bad is happening to you. Something even worse is happening to someone else.

Looking at Tenshinhan forms, he uses White Crane kung fu. Jackie Chun used the Drunken Fist. Yamcha uses a wolf stance and form, which to my knowledge isn't real, but since it is animal, it could be considered a by-product of Shaolin animal kung fu.
Jeet Kune Do isn't a martial art. It's your general, personal way of fighting. They're no belts, no forms, and no rules.
