How to raise our kids on the DB anime.

Post by Conan the SSJ » Sun Jul 23, 2006 2:04 am

I figured this would be a good thread where we can get insight into each other's opinions and reasons as to how we would expose our children to DragonBall. Seeing as I've started the thread, I'll obviously be the first to go. By the way, notice how I've been gone a while? Maybe there is such a thing as message board burnout (j/k).

Anywho, how I'd like to raise my kids on the anime (note: I do not yet have kids, though I'd definitely like one or two sometime down the road). I'd be pretty spoiler-ish myself when showing them, not really telling them the plot, but the way I'd start showing them the series. I'd like to start when they're close to under 10 years old, I figure that's as good a place as any. The language I'd begin showing them would be the dub, considering at that age, I doubt the Japanese version would interest them much.

I would begin at literally the beginning of the story, while it may be very spoiler-ish, I'd start them off with the Bardock special, telling them it's basically a short movie setup of the series. Then I'd start to get them into the original DB anime, starting from the very first episode. What I'd do here is use the edit-dub taping I have from Cartoon Network for the Pilaf saga, then get them into it Uncut with the Tournament saga. I'd want to restrict them to the edit version of the Red Ribbon Army arc though, as there are understandable reasons. Then I'd get them back into it Uncut starting with the Fortune Teller Baba episodes, and all the way through the rest of the series.

Now to after the original series. I'd like to start them off with Dead Zone before the initial Raditz episodes, that way they'd be familiar with Garlic Jr. later on following the Freeza saga. I think I'd rather go with the Ocean dub with Dead Zone, as it retains the original BGM familiarity from the DB series. While they'd likely be confused by the different voices, I'd pretty much just shrug that off. For the Saiyan and Namek arcs, I'm pretty torn on rather to show them the Ocean version (as it gets through those episodes at a quicker and non filler-ish pace) or the redub episodes. Still not sure what to decide for that, though I may end up opting for the Ocean version.

I'd definitely like to give them full Uncut exposure starting with the Ginyu/Freeza saga, as the violence in this arc isn't any more eye cringing than what you'd find in a PG rated Disney movie. Going on through that saga, I'd be fair to them and give them full Garlic Jr. saga exposure, I figure since they haven't read the manga, they wouldn't think too badly of it. Right after that episode where Kuririn proposes to Marron, I'll say what the heck and give them a viewing of the Trunks special. If I need any explanation to give them before that special, I'll just be like "Well, Goku returned, now he's sick". >_>;;

Following that, I'd obviously be ready to show them the early Trunks episodes. Now here's where it'd probably be a little tricky. During the Driving School episode, right at the part where Chichi passes out due to Goku's failing, I'd stop there without continuing the rest of the episode; showing them the first Cooler movie. Basically, I'm one that considers this movie part of the anime continuity (please, no timeline debating); plus I think it'll help give a more believable sense that 3 years is going by.

For the Android arc, I'd begin them right where I left off in the series; the last minute-or-so of the Driving School episode where the 3 years have now gone by. They would get to see it with no edits or such, right to the end of the Cell Games saga. Just another treat, after the episode where Trunks defeats the Androids and Cell in his timeline, I figure this'll be as good a point as any to give them the Bojack feature for viewing. It gives one more final incident with preteen Gohan and Future trunks (not to mention bald Kuririn XD). Next would be the Other World Tournament episodes, a great filler arc that sets up a certain green man Kid Buu does battle with sometime later on Grand Kai's planet.

Then for the start of the Buu arc, beginning right from the high-school episodes with Saiyaman (I can't wait to watch these episodes with my kids) all the way to the episode where Kid Buu is gone and Goku is celebrating with his family and friends in West City. After that episode, I'll definitely have plans for the Hildegarn feature, as I very much believe that deserves a place in the anime continuity, as well as their watching. Following that, the last 3 episodes of the Z series, and I even plan to show them the Goku Jr. special following that. Regarding GT, while I am one that believes it takes place in anime continuity, I just do not want to subject my children to that dub, it makes the Freeza saga look good.

Perhaps when they're 12 or 13, I'd like my dear soul mate and I to begin getting them into the Japanese version, starting back from the Bardock special. I'd like to show them original DB as the original Japanese VAs recorded, in full Uncut form. Then at last: DBZ, Japanese version all out, still in the order from which I'd show the dub. After the last 3 episodes, I'd like to get them into GT in Japanese version, probably re-showing the Goku Jr. special right before the final 8 minutes of episode 64.

That's about all there is to that. As I'm an anime purist when it comes to DB, I don't have full intentions on exposing them to the manga, maybe I'll buy them the first couple DB volumes when they're old enough. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Anyway, now it's your guys' turn. No need to make your post as long as mine, but feel free. :)

I dont think our kids (By "our kids" I mean our generation's children) will care for DBZ unless there was a newer version that didn't have such dated animation. 10, 20 years from now what will our kids think of a show thats 30 or 40 years old? Probley not much.

Also, when you have kids I don't think your going to care for DBZ anymore. I know we all say sure, Iam going to always be a DBZ freak. No, you probley won't. You can definitly have a place for it in your heart, but you probley won't care once your kids come around.

Hey, thats just my two cents. If you still love DBZ and have kids I guess thats cool to. :D

I would be a little "iffy" starting with the Bardock special. I believe that to get the full effect of the series you would start with the dragonball series. I would then show the Bardock special, DBZ and DBGT.

It is like Star Wars. I believe the best way to see the movies would be ep IV, V, I, II, III, VI. This is telling the original saga with all its secrets (Darth Vader is Lukes father). But also showing the flashback of Anakins life before wrapping it all up with Return of the Jedi.

I believe DBZ would be a lot like that. Start out with the original, flashback and finally finish the rest of the series!

Well, how do kids nowaday feel about The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo? Those are also 40-something years old shows, but still pretty popular(of course, both have more modern-day versions out there...). And then there's other things that are just as old or older that are still popular with kids. The Wizard of Oz is still highly regarded, even though it's nearly 70 years old(and the book behind it is over 100...). So this is a question that may or may not mean much. Ofcourse, we probably won't know until 30-40 years from now. :)

On the other hand, will "your kids" like the show so much if daddy insist on watching it? Watching it all the time because daddy said so could turn them off it. :P

Yea, thats a good point, but on the other hand Scooby Doo dosen't take 30 episodes to solve a mystery. :?

Well, when its a movie its a little different. You can watch the whole story in one sitting. With Dragonball it takes days, months, years, to see the ending of the story. I guess it depends a lot on the kid though.

Redoing my post because it was a bunch of crap, excuse me.

From the outlook of the post, you've obviously put a lot of thought into this. It sounds like you want your child/children to be interested in the same thing, perhaps to help them build a better relationship or whatever else. It's nice, but here's the thing. I've noticed parents who 'initiate' children into their favourite form of pop culture, once they hit the puberty mark, will start to get really pissy about it and will take it out on you. It's just how some teenagers go. That and if you try to 'schedule' it, it'll seem like a chore, and if you take so much pleasure in it, they're not really going to want to 'offend' you and it just leads to all kinds of bad.

I know thats a bit awkward but it's the best way I can describe it.

Ultimatly, the best way to get your child into anything you want is to not make them. Children (so long as you don't viciously beat them) usually can be very interested in what their parents do because it's just so different and bizzare. So if you have spare time, watch Dragonball. If your kids ask you what it is, just say you're wathcing something, and explain things only if they have questions. If by the end of it they want more, then show them more, but don't ever make it a chore, or a rite of passage, just make sure it's wholesome, natural time with your kid, and them with their father, nothing else.

I'm not a parent so if there are some and I'm amazingly wrong I'd like to hear so :). Peple can be very very different and varied but children are, for the lack of a nicer word, simple, generally. Therefore it's fairer to make blanket statements about them.

POWER LOVE~!

Well in my experience as a very young child, which I remember very little of, the TV was pretty much my babysitter and I would spend entire days in front of it just drooling and not really taking in anything that I was watching. Now I didn't watch real broadcast television because I don't think my parents thought I was prepared for that, but my mom had plenty of educational videos for me to watch which were understandably in japanese. Stupidly enough my first exposure to Disney movies was in japanese, so I'm thinking this could work pretty much the same way with my own children. If I take after my mother and end up as an incredibly lazy parent I'll just want to leave my toddlers in front of the tube all day, and since I won't have much else except Dragonball I'll just have them watch that in generally chronological order (er, excluding questionable parts).

I didn't have a choice as to what I watched as a kid but it's not like I resent my parents for it. In fact I still have strong attachments to my first shows like Anpanman, despite not understanding a word of it at the time, and still get the urge to watch them even now. I wouldn't want my kids to be obsessed with Dragonball like I am but I at least would like that same measure of familiarity so that I'd have some common ground with them. It's depressing how little I can relate to my own parents and I wouldn't want that for my kids. I just wonder how my future spouse would feel about something dumb like this....

Well, much like Mr. Announcer's childhood, the tube was my general babysitter. If I'm still into the series when I have kids, I'd just do something like a movie night and occasionally show one of the DBZ movies.

If they're into the show, then I'll go on and show some of the Great Saiyaman Saga (one of the more tame sagas) and continue on with DBZ until its end, then show them DBZ from the beginning, DB, and GT. Just as a little side note, this was how I got into the series (after seeing some clips of the Cell Games, that is).

You know the Dragonball story, if you just show them a random movie they'll wonder "Why can they turn blonde?"

Well... (thinking of some kind of comeback) how come Scooby Doo can talk (very badly, by the way)? My kiddies would probably just be like "Oh... so are they stronger now or somethin'?"

EDIT: Most kid's shows don't exactly follow logic :?...

Movie 5 might be a good introduction.

I'm going to start my kids out with the first episode of DragonBall. It's where I started, and is the main reason I started watching DragonBall Z.

While it's be interesting to show them the show in 'chronological' order, it's not the best way to do it. Work that was done later references things that only make sense if you've seen it already. Watching the Bardok special before watching DragonBall would be confusing and distracting. Probably best to watch everything in the order it was released.

I would suggest not pushing it on them, though. Let them develop their own interest in it.

Eh, if I may disagree. I think that showing the Japanese version would actually be good exposure to another culture (since, DragonBall isn't exactly based on European/US culture like Cowboy Bebop, Gungrave, etc.). If I could go back and change an element of my upbringing, it'd be exposure to more different languages at a younger age. I learned some of Spanish that way, and if I had been introduced to Japanese at age 8-10...I'd be set by now (I'm 22 for reference).

Allowing your children to experience different languages and cultures at an earlier age only serves to make them more intelligent. Assuming that they 'won't be interested' will not only possibly instill a bias in them (since you're talking about approaching them at a developmental stage), but it's also being a bit...err, insulting? Hopefully, any fresh mind can appreciate any number of things, even if they're foreign.

For the record, I have no intention to force the series on my kids. I realize they may not like it and if they don't, then I'll accept that and probably never bring it up to them again. I guess if I'd be forcing anything, it'd be wanting them to watch the Bardock special with me. It's not only a chronological start to the series, I think it'd be a swell choice for a family movie night. If the kids are interested in seeing more, then I'd like for my spouse and I to get them into the series, but just as long as they're not watching it just to make me happy. If they're not interested in seeing more, then that's the end of that. While I do have a well thought out and considerable plan, I'm certainly not gonna see that it goes through at any stake.

Also, hopefully, my dear spouse won't mind the Bardock special for a Friday night family watch either. :)

Considering DB would probably be their first Japanese TV exposure, I still have doubts they'd be as interested in it as they may be with the dub, I mean we're talking under 10 years old. This is basically why I think 12 or 13 would be more preferable ages if they'd be interested. But hey, tell ya' what; I wouldn't mind in the least if my wife would choose which version to watch. Hell for all I know, I'll be a whipped hubby. >_>;;

That's a good point Corey, perhaps the best option is to show them both.

I'd be weary of showing the dub first because they might never stop associating the characters to that voice. I know I can't think of Freeza or Vegeta with dub-nightmares ("...my wraaaaath!"). Sigh...

Personally I think starting with an English dub would probably be best if the children are very small, but if the child can read well there's no reason to limit his DragonBall to dub-only.

The best method, for a child that might be old enough for subtitles, might be to show an Episode of DragonBall in Japanese (no subs) to him to spark his interest (and to unfairly get him to associate the characters with the Japanese voices :P), then explain that it's another language and he can watch it with different voices in English or with those same voices but with subtitles.

And of course, there's always the option of showing them the manga first - getting them into the story without any voices at all.

If I had a boy I'd start letting him read the Manga, if he cared to, around the age of 15. If it goes somewhere, cool. Afterwards I'd let him watch the (Japanese w/ Subs) anime if he wanted.

But I would keep the dub away like a bad itch. It's Japanese and YOU WILL watch it in Japanese. Lol.

If i had a boy or girl I start him or her with the Anime since they would like the colors and fast moving pictures. If they like the Anime and get into read let them read the Manga. Get them to read early on since they will get hooked!
