Puar's Gender

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Puar's Gender

Post by Maphisto86 » Fri Aug 04, 2006 1:00 am

I know many will be wondering why the hell I have asked this question and I'm sure most have not bothered in asking themselves such a question. Puar appears to have no applicable gender since Puar... well ya know. Still Puar's personality seems rather feminine though in Wikipedia and other sources Puar is refferred to as male. So what is this sexual organless, shapeshifting, floating cat's gender?

I'm pretty sure Puar's male. In one of the first dragonball ending credits, there's one scene where everyone crossdresses, and Puar's shown with the guys.
On hiatus.

I know that the old Ocean dubs of DB/DBZ they mistakenly referred to Puar as female, but in the Ask Toriyama letters in DB, he says Puar's male. But as people wonder, in the story, they don't refer to Puar really by any gender-specific pronouns.

Yeah I came accross an article in Wikipedia about Puar (I know it's Wikipedia but I like their articles) and it states how Toryiama referred to Puar as male but Puar's gender is never set in stone in the manga. It's all confusing... :x I geuss it's best left up to the fans to decide  :) .

Actually this question has been asked about a thousand times here, well okay I exaggerate, more like a couple at least. Anyway, so it's not really as odd a question as you think.

I know that in one of the Q&A sessions in the DB manga, Toriyama did answer the question and state that he thought of Puar as male. I just can't remember which volume now.......

I also remember that the question was reprinted in one of the first issues of American Shonen Jump as well. Going to see if I can at least track that down.....
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I looked in the back of Volume 2 for literally 2 seconds and found the question. Go me!

DragonBall Vol. 2 Akira Toriyama's "Ask me anything" corner.

Q. I Like Pu'ar. I told my brother that Pu'ar is a cat and he told me that Pu'ar is a mouse. Who is right?

A. Actually, Pu'ar is neither a cat nor a mouse, but I draw him a little bit like a cat.

I'm quite certain he's male. I think he went to school with Ooolong and something tells me he wouldn't pick on girls. (Besides stealing their panties  ) therefore making me convinced he's male.

Then again, that's a translation. Maybe Toriyama didn't confirm anything, in the original Japanese.

(for the record? male)

No they're probably right... Akira Toryiama considers Puar to be male. It is crazy then that the English dub refers to Puar as a "her". As I said before even though A.T. has stated more then once that he thought Puar is a guy that it was never really stated one way or the other in the manga... :x . That's awkward considering most fans I have talked to think Puar is a girl but alas Puar doesen't seem to have any real.... um... "gender specific anatomy" . Yeah that's politcally correct enough!

I've always thought of Pu'ar as male. He/she/it uses male speech and nuances in the Japanese version.

Actually, I've heard Oolong say "he" in the dub too at least once. It was later on with Funi's dub cast though. Yes it seems the original dub made a lot of incorrect assumptions that *still* plague DB fandom. "Bardock P.H.D." anyone? XP

I know myself actually always thought of Puar as male and I know of other people I've talked to that had that opinion too. I think the main reason many people think he's a girl is because of the high-pitched voice. Though as I've argued before, he has a high-pitched voice because he's a little, cute cat-thing. It's the same as with Chip and Dale or Nermal from the Garfield cartoon. All males.

Plus Tori-bot brought up a really excellent point that I'd forgotten all about. Puar does indeed use "male speech" in the original Japanese.

Viz isn't perfect, but they aren't a bunch of hacks. They wouldn't mess something that simple up, especially since it was back in the earlier volumes long before the likes of "Djinn" and "Hercule".

Pu'er is Male.

True. And I have to say I prefer "Djinn" to TokyoPop's "Bunny" or "Plum".

In one of the Q&A sections of my viz manga, Akira says something along the lines off..."For what it counts, I made him to be male".

Not an exact quote though, and I'm too lazy to quote the exact thing, but it's true.

I believe that quote is "I've always thought of him as male". And then he laughs. What a weird dude.
