GT in my perspective
When most Dragonball fans think of GT the first thing that pops into their head is: Derivitive, full of plotholes, confusing, ect. However if you get deep into it, many reasons unfold.
First off I will give a brief summary on how I view each series.
Dragonball: Dragonball was mainly about, well, the Dragonballs. Their was not much during Dragonball that did not involve the Dragonballs.
Dragonball Z: Dragonball Z was the turing point in the series, because it was this that turned the series into a hardcore fighting show. On DBZ the Dragonball were pretty much used as a get out of jail free card for after battles.
Therefore GT seems to be a combination of these two. Two of the four series involved Dragonballs a lot more than DBZ, but it also trying to keep it's popular fighting style at the same time.
So this is my theory as to why GT turned out the way it did.
Thank you and I'm really sorry if this was long and boring.

GT missed so many opportunities, they could have turned it around so much when Bebi came into the story but it was more of a case of just filling the schedual until a game was released back then. Quite ironic in actuality.
I hated it how every time Goten and Trunks were about to fuse or do something awesome Goku would say "No, don't. Let me do this alone, you just sit back and watch me and every so often go Super-Saiyan and attack in mass just for my opponent to defeat you all in one punch accompanied by a short and swift burst of music".

I like GT. In fact, I remember being so excited when I thought I won it on eBay that i damn near died three years later when it finally came out on DVD. Granted I've never seen all of it there is no way it's as bad as people want it to be.
It's just a cartoon after all.
It's just a cartoon after all.
Just remember, everytime something bad is happening to you. Something even worse is happening to someone else.

GT was originally going to end at Bebis defeat . The reason it wasn't is because the DragonBall GT Final Bout game hadn't been released yet so the show had to be extended. That is the main reason why GTs quality is so bad compared to Mr.Toriyamas work. Well, to me anyway. The reason it was created in the first place was to capitalize on DragonBalls popularity to sell more DragonBall products. Toei even changed the tone of the series because nobody was watching. Now everyone has their own opinion I undertsand that. And if you think GT is just fine, then thats ok.
But I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are reasons why it failed in Japan. GT has always been and always will be the black sheep of the DragonBall universe in the large majority of fans minds.

Honestly, I can't help but feel "so what?" about that comment. The run of the manga was extended past the planned ending point, for commerical reasons also. The last sentence there just has me thinking "so?". The anime series, the movie, and even the parts of the manga were created to capitalize on Dragonball's popularity(something that comes with a capitalist economy), yet, most enjoy those things.GT was originally going to end at Bebis defeat . Well, yeah the Cell and Buu sagas weren't originally planned but Mr.Toriyama still put effort into making those sagas. My point about GT is that the only motivation for the series creation was to make money off of DragonBall products. Now, there's nothing wrong with wanting to make money. After all in the end everything is created to make money. But with GT they didn't really (from my point of view) put a lot of effort into making a quality series. The few things that are decent in the show are just copies of things I've seen before. And when the best things about a show are just copies of things I've seen before in the series that came befor it , then it just is'nt a quality series. Of course this is just my personal opinion of the show. If you disagree, then thats fine. I respect other peoples views.

I seen some people that consider the beginning of the series, when they search for the Black Star dragonballs, to be a seperate saga. That's probably what he meant.JAKEMAN wrote:Yeah wasnt there 3 story arcs?Leotaku wrote:I'm just curious; what four series are we talking about..?future_trunks wrote:Therefore GT seems to be a combination of these two. Yeah, FUNimation has it as a seperate saga, too.Jerseymilk wrote:I seen some people that consider the beginning of the series, when they search for the Black Star dragonballs, to be a seperate saga. I'd call it the same arc as Baby (since in my mind, a single "arc" can incorporate a lot. ie, the Boo arc)

I'm glad that the series didn't stop at Freeza though...
Freeza as a charecter is cool... as a saga, eh, not so much.
Anyways, I really like GT, and I find it funny that it gets more crap than the Garlic Jr. Saga or the After-life Budokai, well, the Garlic Jr. saga does get a lot of crap... but no one ever says anything about the After-live Budokai, and while I enjoyed it, a lot of GT was just as good, and neither were Toriyama related. Though, like was said before, GT missed a lot of chances to be cool.

Well I've never been against filler in general and the afterlife tournament was probably my favorite arc because while it didn't involve many of the staple dragonball characters it was still inventive and enjoyable. It kind of made me feel a little nostalgic for Gokuh's old tournament days back when he wasn't on top yet and entering into unfamiliar territory. GT on the other hand didn't appear to have much thought put into it at all. I think the first 16 episodes had a good clear focus and maybe if it had kept going along those lines the remainder would have been watchable to me. Afterwards there was just no question of the plot being pulled straight out of someone's ass. I know they were trying to combine fighting elements with the original adventure/dragonball ideas but they failed miserably in the fighting department. I can't think of a single fight or villain that I liked in that series. Even in DBZ I had felt that the super saiyan and ki blast fighting was getting out of hand but GT just took it to the next level with ridiculous powerups and and uncreative battles. Overall, just in bad bad taste and not really doing credit to either of the previous series.

Well for one, GT's quality was already pretty bad before the Baby saga, you can't blame the decline of the show on that. But was it ever really confirmed that the show was extended because of Final Bout? I heard that myself a number of years ago, but never saw any evidence. It seems kinda sketchy to me, episodes cost a lot of money to produce, more than a Playstation game I would think.Majin Cell wrote:GT was originally going to end at Bebis defeat . Well, to be honest, no I dont know for sure that it was extended just for the Final Bout game. But I do believe that because I have no reason not to.Deus ex Machina wrote:Well for one, GT's quality was already pretty bad before the Baby saga, you can't blame the decline of the show on that. That's pretty weak reasoning there. If there's no proof (or proof is uncertain), then it shouldn't be treated as factual. I've also heard this "extended only because of Final Bout" thing(first with DBZ uncensored), but where did this come from?Well, to be honest, no I dont know for sure that it was extended just for the Final Bout game. Well, everybody thinks differently. Sometimes I need proof to believe a rumor, sometimes I don't. It depends on the rumor. As for where the rumor came from, I couldn't tell you. I just remember reading about it a long time ago.Domon wrote:That's pretty weak reasoning there. If there's no proof (or proof is uncertain), then it shouldn't be treated as factual. No offence man, but that's fucking retarded. You can't just go around saying things are true without proof.Majin Cell wrote:Well, everybody thinks differently. It's all well and good to believe whatever you want, but it's quite another to say it's actually true. You need to make sure what you advise other people on is based on fact.
Here's an easy to use checklist for any 'rumours':
1. Is there any reason to think this is true?
2. Is there any proof?
3. Does it explain something more simply, or more logically than the previously held explanation?
If you answer 'no' to any of those, then it's probably bullshit.

Well, when I first brought it up, I did make it sound like it was a fact and should've been clearer that it wasn't. However, in my next post I did correct myself .desirecampbell wrote:No offence man, but that's fucking retarded.
