Website/Forum Outage

Post by Hujio » Fri Apr 04, 2014 10:11 pm

As you probably no doubt know, the main website and forums have been down for the past few days. I cannot even begin to describe how stressful, frustrating, and time consuming it has been to get us back up and running smoothly, but what's done is done. Overnight on April 1st we were inundated with numerous connections by some not so nice places. The extreme amount of traffic was maxing out our CPU. Initially our host disabled the forums, without consulting us, which is where most of the traffic was being directed. I re-initiated everything the following morning, but the traffic was still too extreme for the CPU to handle it. In order to stop the site from being disabled by our host again, and so that I could have access to troubleshoot things, we implemented IP blocks to stop the traffic. Unfortunately that meant we had to block all of you as well. So technically the site has been up, but you were all being denied access by the server (Error 403). Since then it's been nothing but troubleshooting, in-between work-work and parenting. Luckily I have a very understanding wife, and lots of PTO.

At this point it appears that everything's pretty much back to normal again and I finally bit this thing in the butt, but I'm still playing it by ear for now. Things may get worse again, but let's all cross our fingers that it won't.

I sincerely thank everyone for their patience and support during this "not so fun" time. Also, thanks to those that spread the word. Finally, I'd also like to apologize for any withdrawal symptoms you may have had to endure during this hardship. Now, carry on!

*passes out from exhaustion* :wtf:

I can keep playing FF14 instead of working on the site, right...?

Phew, that bites. Did all of the hits at least count towards advertisement revenue?

No legitimate traffic = no displays = no revenue.

Wow, Kanzenshuu was DDoS'd. That's unexpected to the say the least.

Congrats on getting that all sorted in a timely fashion. Definitely not an easy thing to deal with.

I don't even know what that is but I'm assuming it isn't good. is it hackers?

I wouldn't really call it hacking since it takes zero effort to do nor does it really 'hack' into anything. It's essentially a flood of connections to the site.

I think the best analogy would be to imagine you're working at an office and someone calls and asks you what '2+2' is. Since only one person is calling, that's not an issue. Now imagine if 15 people are calling with the same question, you can go as fast you can and get through it all but it takes a lot longer for people waiting their turn.

Now imagine 50 people are calling you. As you answer, even MORE people are calling and suddenly there's hundreds on hundreds waiting. You try your best to get to all the callers but eventually you reach your limit and can't answer anything. You're just too swamped.

When a server is getting more requests than it can handle, it clogs up and essentially crumbles. So, in the case of Kanzenshuu, someone will have been using a swarm of PCs to send an insane amount of traffic to the site to the point in which it simply couldn't function any longer.

Heath will have spent the past few days trying to isolate and block all the false connections. To actually allow the site to 'breathe', he will have disabled all incoming connections to the site.

Not an easy feat by any means so definitely a huge congrats on getting it sorted in such a timely manner and not going crazy while doing it!

Wow! What purpose is there in doing something like that? :? I don't want to point fingers because it's not right and probably against the rules, but I wonder if it could have been that person that posted porn on here but got banned? But I'm just glad Kanzenshuu is back. Sorry Hujio that you had to do all that work buddy.

No other purpose than being an asshole. In our case, it's an inconvenience not being able to visit a place we all enjoy. In the case of Kanzenshuu's staff, it's a blow financially for this month. Like Mike said; no views = no ad revenue.

Very unfortunate that it happened. You'll see sites that are targeted by this kinda thing often implementing DDoS protection like CloudFlare that will identify whether a user is legitimate or not before allowing or disallowing access to the site. For 90% of sites, it's not even a concern and so there's no real need to pay for such things.

Here's hoping it was just a one time issue and such measures won't be necessary.

So happy the site is back up and running. The past few nights I've been waking up in cold sweats from not getting my daily dose of Kanzenshuu.

I was without Kanzenshuu, I had like panic attacks, I tried to use twitter as a replacement, and it was interesting seeing the haul Julian brought in. I got real bumbed though, and I actually did have withdrawal symptoms. It wasn't fun to say the least, I hope it's not the weird person who posted odd things here. He probably had his big brother (assuming he is 12), do all these nasty things to DragonBall heaven. :(

I'm happy that it was sorted out, and I can continue to post/lurk whenever I want. It's crazy I never knew being without a specific website would affect me so much.

While I can't talk too much since I was also having some withdrawals (especially with all kinds of things like Boo Kai, Minus, and impending US BoG release going on), but if you guys think a few days without this forum/site was bad...before the FUNimation Forums came back, they were down and MIA for like...months. I don't remember an exact timeframe, but it was at least three or four months if not more I think. Now that was hell. :P

Glad to have the site and forum back though. If it really was something that someone orchestrated, that sucks, and hopefully you guys don't have to deal with this kind of thing again.

Was extremely happy to see the site back up. It was a scary couple of days.

Wouldn't have any idea on how to run a website, so I really appreciate the amount of time and effort you guys dedicate to Kanzenshuu.

Luckily everything's up and running in time for Dragon Ball Kai's glorious return.

So glad that you guys are back. We're all so grateful for the insane amount of work you all put into this site. Things are still a bit glitchy for me, though. Load times around the site and forum are extremely slow and I'll often get a 503 - "Service Temporarily Unavailable" error page while I'm waiting for things to slowly load.
