Dragon Ball Z more violent than Dragon Ball?
The instances I remember when Dragon Ball Z was actually violent:
1] Goku and Raditz bloody hole thanks to Piccolo's Mankankosappo
2] Kuririn gets impaled by Freeza
3] Cell strips the life out of an old rich guy
4] Videl is brutally assaulted during the tournament as if she were a punch bag
5] Mr. Satan's dog is shot down
I'm not counting Yamucha's death, Gohan's "child abuse" or Chaozu's suicide attack because they weren't really all that bad at all.
Whereas in Dragon Ball they had some really gross violent stuff going on, such as is:
1] Dracula Man sucking blood straight from Kuririn's head
2] Oopa's dad being killed with a spear
3] Commander Red is shot in the head
4] Tao Pai Pai's kills General Blue
5] Tao Pai Pai's kills an innocent tailor
6] Colonel Violent sacrifices two colleagues so just that she can escape death
7] Goku rips through Piccolo Daimao's stomach
8] Chichi decapitates a dinosaur
9] General Blue attempted to attract Obatchaman (not violent, but very creepy)
So just because a show has characters punching, kicking and sending beams whichever direction it doesn't automatically make it necessary violent.

Don't forget:
- Vegeta's arm is snapped by #18.
- Freeza beats the life out of Vegeta before mercilessly killing him.
I think they both have their fair share of violence; they're just very different. Z's darker tone and grander fights tend to make that violence far more relentless and mature-feeling.

Without sitting down and actually doing the research, I feel like there was a decrease in frequency for violent acts from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z. What the Z era did have though, was generally more violent than what came before.

And there is also Oozaru Vegeta breaking Goku.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

DBZ has Freeza literally ripping off Nail's arm. But then again Piccolo ripped his own arm off in DragonBall.

Both were pretty violent in my opinion. I felt the Namek Saga was the most violent saga in my opinion. GT is the tamest show out of the three in my opinion.

The only violent moment I can think of in GT, was when bebi bursts out of myuu's back.
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

Another to the Z List:
1. Vegeta kneeing Burta in the neck
2. Ginyu piercing the right side of his chest.
3. Dr. Gero squeezing the head of a somewhat younger old man off.
4. Dr. Gero piercing Yamcha's belly.
5. Tenshinhan being chocked by #17
6. Cell stomping #16's head.
7. Gohan kicking Cell at the back of his head, and actually managing to crack it.
8. Gohan oblirating Cell with his Kamehameha.
9. The dead corpses around Babidi Spaceship.
10. Spopobitchi exploding.
11. Majin Boo clapping Kaioshin's head.
EDIT: I also forgot Gohan's slughtering of the Cell Juniors.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

- Rildo blowing up Dolltaki's head
- Bebi coming out Myuu's back
- Goku getting crush by Bebi's Oozaru hands
- Vegeta getting stab by Super Yi Xing Long's spikes
Other then those, GT is the tamest show out of the three shows. I view DB and DBZ uncut rated PG-13 and GT rated PG.

I remember an example of bloodless carnage in the General Blue Saga with the aforementioned Blue's troops getting killed by that trap in the cave. There was no blood at all.

Yeah, I remember that one, forgot to mention it. They didn't even show where it pierced (well, until a later flashback, at least).dbboxkaifan wrote:There wasn't blood on the spear either that killed Oopa's father, which was thrown by Tao Pai Pai.Valerius Dover wrote:I remember an example of bloodless carnage in the General Blue Saga with the aforementioned Blue's troops getting killed by that trap in the cave. I think the dead family round Babidi's ship is one of the mosre gruesome things in the manga. We clearly see a dead child and the woman is cut clean in half laying in a pool of her own blood.

Piccolo JR vs Son Goku anyone? That has one of the most violent beat downs in all of anime. Just brutal.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada
Re: Dragon Ball Z more violent than Dragon Ball?
Its a trick of the animation..... :/
Of course Dragon Ball is just as violent, it's just hard to tell with the animation style now.
Think of it this way. In shows like Naruto and Bleach, the characters obviously aren't DBZ level and can't blow up planets with their strongest attacks, but when they use an energy attack the animation makes it look like an extremely huge nuke, when the animation of some energy blasts in DBZ just have small dust clouds sometimes.....even though they could blow up multiple planets. LOL XD

Re: Dragon Ball Z more violent than Dragon Ball?
Dragon Ball Z is definitely more violent. Not that that's good or bad, though. Although it does remind me of something funny, when someone was trying to argue that Dragon Ball is the more violent one (and unlike Z wasn't made for kids yadda yadda) and when talking about the Goku vs Piccolo battle, said:
"And this isn't Dragon Ball Z, where energy blasts only leave scuff marks. This is Dragon Ball, and Goku's got a friggin' hole in his shoulder"
Which is absolutely hilarious because that is the only time in Dragon Ball that ki blasts were shown being that violent, and it's Dragon Ball Z that has people constantly getting holes punched through them or blown away completely by ki attacks.

I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
