Are you tired of Dragon Ball fighting games?
Maybe the majority don't feel the same way, but I've been disappointed for the last 10-15 years that 90% of the many Dragon Ball games out there are fighting games. It's gotten to the point that I feel developers are simply trying to cash in on a quick buck by making fighting game after fighting game after fighting game. Personally I'd like to see more RPG games. Or something that has a great emphasis on the narrative instead of the mindless fighting. I know the story overtime got overdone with fighting more than anything else, but I don't think that means the video game market based off the source material has to have the same fate. Perhaps it has to do with games like Attack of the Saiyans not selling as well. That was just one game though and it was for the DS. Personally I thought it wasn't bad. Or maybe developers feel there isn't much to tell except the same stories (I think that could be easily rectified though as there are instances in the canonical timeline that provide grounds for new stories). It would be interesting if we had a console game in that manner. Unless I missed one.

You can't have a Dragon Ball game without fighting. If it isn't a fighter, it can still work, but you have to keep it true to DB. Most people don't buy the games because they're looking for a really fun video game to play because it's considered one of the best out there. Most buy them to recreate the DB experience. I think that could be done in an RPG. I think it could be done in a variety of genres, but really where could they take it?
I thought DBZ Sagas was better than it gets credit for. It had a number of flaws, don't get me wrong, but I thought it was a good concept. I'd love to see something like that, but of course more polished and just better overall.

Re: Are you tired of Dragon Ball fighting games?
I honestly don't really understand why basically all console Dragon Ball games (excluding Sagas, which was also developed stateside, so it barely counts) have to be dedicated fighting games. Since the series revival and the video game licensing, they've had twelve years to give us something that isn't a fighting game. An RPG, an adventure game, an action game... or a combination therein.
Sadly, Battle of Z seemed to be the closest we've gotten.

Yes, very much so.
Mostly because everything after Tenkaichi 2-3 to me has been decent in one aspect, and mediocre to below average in other aspects. Or in some cases, decent at nothing (Battle of Z).

I don't see why you can't have both though. You shouldn't have to cater to just Dragon Ball fans. You should create an experience that everyone can enjoy regardless if they're a huge fan of the franchise or not. I don't believe these constant fighting games have done that at all. It's just the same thing with a new title slapped on it every two or three years. A new experience hasn't been brought to the table for a while.CM101Play wrote:You can't have a Dragon Ball game without fighting. An RPG? You've to much expectations, how much budget do you think DBZ get?

All the handhelds though, bro. And aside from that, they kinda tried it already with Sagas, didn't they?Zenkashuu wrote:An RPG? You've too much expectations, how much budget do you think DBZ gets?

So-so. Though, like others said, DB(mostly Z and GT though) is about fighting. I sorta wished that Battle of Z was like Sagas cuz of the concept of it. Maybe if it was like that, it would've sold well and they would never call Dimps back.

I'm pretty sure that there was no doubt in mind that Sagas was a good concept. It's the execution that failed, so much that it ruined any chance of developers making an action-adventure DBZ game.CM101Play wrote:I thought DBZ Sagas was better than it gets credit for. Re: Are you tired of Dragon Ball fighting games?
Every time they stray from it being a fighting game, it sells like crap.
Db Advanced Adventure, Sagas, Attack of the Saiyans... The Legacy of Goku series is the only one to do well, and even then shitty-ass LoG1 sold the most because it came out in 2002 when the franchise was having a renaissance.

Yes, sagas was a great concept and despite it not coming together full circle achieving a fluid game I was still able to enjoy it for what it was. The potential just wasn't realized but you made a good point that the concept was there.DBZAOTA482 wrote:I'm pretty sure that there was no doubt in mind that Sagas was a good concept. You can make a quality game without a high budget. It's more about the actual substance of the game than the actual form of it. We've had games in the past without high budgets become extremely successful.Zenkashuu wrote:An RPG? You've to much expectations, how much budget do you think DBZ get?
The Dragon Ball fighting games will probably continue to sell moderately, but unless the franchise changes gears that is the best to be expected. Moderate sales. Hopefully someday Namco Bandai will change it's tune.

Re: Are you tired of Dragon Ball fighting games?
I am seriously tired of the Dragon Ball fighting games. Before Xenoverse was released, I was truly holding out hope that it was something different, but I wasn't holding my breath. What's so frustrating is that DBO had so much promise. I'm not even a huge fan of MMOs, but one based on Dragon Ball Universe was a dream. I played in spite of the game's flaws, not being able to read the quests, and mostly having to play solo because us foreigners were pretty sporadic. And yet I still had a great time with the game and dreamed of a US release. To this day, I cannot understand how they managed to screw that game up. In the right hands, an MMO based on DBZ can make a TON of money.
People are paying subscriptions for DBZ BYOND games for goodness sake! I have a 9 year old stepson who is obsessed with DBZ Kai, and it's amazing how we are both able to enjoy a show together that I watched waaaay back in high school. It's extremely frustrating to see them hash out the same old games. I'm not one of those people that is so hyped up about Dimps making this game because it's just another fighting game. I'm not saying it won't be fun, but let's do something different. DBO had an original story that Akira Toriyama worked on himself, how do you not capitalize off that!
I'm a huge basketball fan, and Dragon Ball as a franchise reminds me of a team with all the talent in the world that will never win anything.
If only SOE could get the rights and make a DB MMO, but unfortunately that would never happen. Instead, we'll just probably get Dragon Ball Worldly Limit Super Battle for the PS9....

Re: Are you tired of Dragon Ball fighting games?
It's not so much that people are tired of fighting games but more so that the developers are making customers feel tired of them due to how they play out as.
If we had Dimps back in 2010-present we'd have awesome fighting games but instead Bandai Namco hired Spike and Artdink do to them as if they're competent to satisfy the needs of the fanbase.

Past is past, development costs are higher nowadays and moreover, Namco is not the same big company. Their beloved bady, Tekken (TT2), hit low sales. Heck, even the rushed SCV matched its sales.Ness wrote:You can make a quality game without a high budget. It's more about the actual substance of the game than the actual form of it. Re: Are you tired of Dragon Ball fighting games?
Tekken probably sold over 2 million copies that's not low. They don't give the games the budget because the sales have dropped because there's no reason to buy the games coming out now.

Yes and no. I still like fighting games, and I can understand why we get so many of them for Dragon Ball - I mean, one of the main focuses of the franchises is fighting after all - but it would be nice to get more games of other genres. I'm still waiting for something 'different' to get it right, like Sagas tried to be and failed. I would also sell my soul for LEGO DBZ: The Video Game. ...Well, at least a fraction of my soul. ...I'd sell somebody's soul for it.
