Anyone like Brian Drummond (Ocean) as Vegeta?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Anyone like Brian Drummond (Ocean) as Vegeta?

Post by GI_Judd2287 » Tue Sep 19, 2006 10:38 am

I was looking at some YouTube videos and I stumbled upon this little gem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QSb02uwOAE . It brought me back to the old days of DBZ when I didn't know what would happen next and actually thought of Vegeta as a threat. Drummond does the perfect Vegeta, IMO.

I always assumed Ocean got new VA's, but I was shocked to learn they kept most of the same people. I never thought I'd hear Drummond giving Vegeta's farewell speech during the Buu saga.

Because it was my first impression of Vegeta, I've always 'accepted' that that was Vegeta's voice. Sabat's rougher voice actually seemed to make Vegeta sound older, which I also accepted.

I don't particularly like his voice - but I can't get it out of my head now.

*side note* Anyone else feel uncomfortable when Vegeta got a little too 'creepy math teacher' on Gohan there?

I loved Brian Drummond's Vegeta voice in the Ocean Group DBZ dub, he impoved even more once the dub started airing only in U.K... and his quotes in "Spirt Bomb Triumphant" were the best of his character :D

Yes, which is part of why that's a great scene.

Vegeta's all 'we're the last of the Saiyans, we gotta watch out for each other', you start thinking 'well, maybe he's not that evil... a bit creepy, but some spark of honor' and then BAM knees a little kid in the gut.

I liked it better.

It was my first introduction to Vegeta so maybe that's why I liked it?

I don't know, I liked him to a point. I doubt that he would've been as good later on in the series, but maybe I could be wrong, I'll just have to see some clips to make up my mind on that. I certainly enjoyed his voice in the Saiyan Saga and I'm not really looking forward towards hearing the re-dubbing. Vegeta really does have a creepy/insane feeling added to him thanks to Brian Drummond whereas Sabat kinda looses that feeling.

He's the only English Vegeta I can tolerate, and I pretty much enjoy his performance for all I've heard it (which is just 2 seasons), but he isn't perfect...but very good. Ryo will always be the best.

Drummond's actual voice for Vegeta isn't accurate to the original by any means, but his characterization/personality is bang on. I believe a lot of that has to do with the fact that when he got the role, he researched Vegeta's background and read up on everything that happened to him throughout the entire series. This gave him a better idea of the character and also how to plan out his performance accordingly.

To answer your question no, I hated his voice. It really made Vegeta look more like a spoiled brat than an actual saiyan warrior. I don't know if they 'questionable' script attributed to this but in the end, for english voices anyway, Chris Sabat does the best Vegeta voice.

I found a Brian Drummond clip of where Majin Vegeta sacrifices himself against Buu. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Qjjnx03qQ&NR

Pretty well done from a performance standpoint, but the mood is killed by the horrible music. :x

Technically, Vegeta was a spoiled brat, what with being a Prince who thought because of his status of being an Elite Saiyan that he was better than everyone and was used to getting his way. >_>

Haha, I remember how cute Majin Buu sounded in the Ocean dub (we also had Ocean for the Buu saga and such on TV here).

And I also really like Brian as Vegeta. But Ryo's the very best, of course. But most people share that opinion. 8)

To see Brian Drummond at his best, check out this Ocean Group DBZ episode entitled "The Long Awaited Fight" in 2 parts...

Note: Do you notice how Ocean put the sound effects over the music the right way, which compared to Funimation that put the music over the sound effects ^^;

Wow, Hercule's voice is so much better in the Funi dub. =[

I liked Brian Drummond's performance but I accept Chirs Sabat as a worthy succesor. Sabat makes Vegeta sound a little older but he still has that evil streak. Brian pulls off a more... "creepy but cool" sounding voice to Vegeta. It was hard for me to choose but I like Sabat's Vegeta the best. This is despite hearing Drummond's Vegeta first... :? I just hope Sabat can pull off that "YOU WILL FEEL MY WRAAAAATH!!!!!" line just as good (and I'm sure he will) . And of course I repect Ryo's voice as "the" Vegeta since he was the original and he is one of my favourites of the original cast.

So to answer the question.... yes but to an extent. I prefer Chris's rendition of Vegeta as I feel he can pull off the good and evil sides of Vegeta unlike Brian. Still I haven't seen much of the post-Frieza Drummond episodes yet.

LOL...yeah Satan's voice in that clip was terrible.

As for Drummond later on in the series, I don't know, I guess I'm just used to Sabat's voice. In my opinion, Drummond didn't do the "sentimental" Vegeta very well, maybe he did better for other lines, but the one in the first clip wasn't really good. I love his scream though, it is just as good or little better then Sabat's. I guess if Drummond can go just a little bit deeper in his voice (not as deep as Sabat's though), I'll probably like him better.

I like the English cast we have now, but the Ocean group was the DBZ I was exposed to first. (Toonami's "Dragonball Reset". What year was that, anyway?)

Drummond made Vegeta my favorite character. Instantly. I tuned in every day, I was so into it. But the episodes were running in sequence, of course, and when the Ocean episodes ran out? . . . holy freaking Mother of God, was I pissed. I got used to it (Sabat's great), but at the time all I could think of was how horrible Vegeta sounded with that different voice. Drummond just sounded so cool, and what was coming out of Vegeta's mouth now sounded like a bad Drummond impression.

I knew Ocean had continued with their own version of the dub, but I never thought I'd actually get to hear anything beyond Namek. What a glorious/horrible thing YouTube can be! If only for nostalgia's sake, I wish they would release this version on DVD. Isn't there one company in the UK that'll do that?!

Are you referring to the re-dub? Because I think they changed that line to something along the lines of "When I find you, I'LL KILL YOOOUUUUU!!"

Heh... knowing the Ocean dub I can see why they changed it. Though that isin't much of a change. I actually thought the switch of English dubs at first as kinda weird but I learned to like Sabat's impression very quickly. Drummond does sound more "evil" as Vegeta at first but I can easily see Sabat doing that kind of voice. It's really jut a different interpretation of a single character by different actors.... think "James Bond". Ryo Horikawa is definitley the "Sean Connery" of Vegeta however... 8)
