DB Box Set

Post by Great Saiyaman » Mon Sep 25, 2006 3:35 pm

This was reported over on MFG:
JerrodDRagon has just sent me some very interesting news: Apparently, FUNimation will be releasing a new DVD box set called the "DragonBall Complete Collection Part 1". This DVD set will contain the first 6 sagas of the original Dragonball series -- uncut, and re-dubbed in English by FUNimation. This new box set is scheduled to hit stores October 11th of this year.

Yes, finally Dragonball season one will be released on DVD! But to get it you will have to buy the whole box set. The box set is 12 discs which have the first 6 sagas from Dragonball. There’s over 2000, (yes 2000) minutes of video on these DVD's -- but that’s not all you get. Also included in the box set are:

- TV Spots
- Character Profiles
- Bonus Full Length Feature "Curse of the Blood Rubies"

Back in 1995, FUNimation acquired the rights to broadcast Dragonball in North America. However after only 13 episodes, the series was dropped due to bad ratings. In 2000, these episodes were released on DVD by KidMark. Since then, FUNimation has gone back and re-dubbed these 13 episodes, but has yet to release them on DVD (in North America) because KidMark still maintains the rights to the episodes. Because of this, it's very surprising to see a new box set coming out containing these episodes. Could it be possible this box set will only hit stores out of North America?

When you really get down to it, the only bad thing about these DVDs is the price; Which from JerrodDRagon's observations, can range from $76-100 (but for 83 episodes it may be worth it).
Thoughts? Also, I have a question.....does this mean all of the eps were re-dubbed or just the Saga Of Goku?

-edit- Damnit! I just realized I missed my 'Columbus post'. I was looking forward to it (goes back and edits post 1492).

Hmm, very interesting. Man I constantly feel as if I'm being screwed over by FUNimation. Hopefully they've acquired the rights to distribute the first 13 episodes. Other than that, this is awesome news.

So no US/Region 1 release? :(

Are they joking? $100 for 83 episodes of any series is a friggin' steal!

I'm skeptical, wouldn't we have heard about this earlier? October 11th isn't that far away.

If it is true though, i regret just ordering the tournament and red ribbon sagas just two days ago. Argh.

I'm skeptical about this set. It's stated that it'll be released next month on the 11th, a Wednesday. We should have heard about this earlier and it should be scheduled to be released on a Tuesday, not a Wednesday.

The 11th could be when this set is officially announced for pre-order, it could be a Madman release for Down Under (and we just haven't heard about it until now), or it could be hoax. I'll be excited if this does turn out to be true but until then, I'm going to have to remain skeptical.

Same goes. What's the credibility of this source? Where did the image come from?

I've been hearing rumblings about a Madman multiple-set-collection for a few months now, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's it. Furthermore, FUNimation's banking on some type of huge DBZ announcement in the near future... it doesn't make any sense to do something like this right now.

Then again, being FUNimation, that means it's the perfect time to announce something like this.

I can't imagine them releasing Dragonball "season" sets before they released The DBZ sets, the DBZ ones are going to be the most profitable for them.
Plus the Dragonball sets are already fairly affordable and have enough episodes crammed onto each disc. I don't really see them going back and repackaging them again.

Well I can definitely see them doing this if they want to release their re-dub of episodes 1-13 and possibly movie 1 because Funimation knows WE WANT THESE. If by any chance this happens to be Dragon Box footage with Daimao's subtitles, fans'll by these so quick they won't be able to make enough.

From the looks of the image, it looks pretty similar to the Madman releases. I don't really see FUNi leaving so mach blank background space... especially if it's orange :?.

Well, FUNi re-dubbed eps 1-13, since they didn't match with the later episodes. So, I wouldn't get why they would re-re-dub episode 14 and on...

I dont know what to think of it. My gut tells me its just a rumor, but hey you never know right? That would be cool. I don't like the box art though, but it might just be an early concept.

I hope this is a rumour. I spent $150 on most of the series already, I don't feel like shelling out more just to get the first 13 episodes. :(

Edit: What I mean is that I'd rather them release them in the same way they did with the other "sagas".

Eh? This sounds very suspicious, although I'll be ecstatic if it is true. Oct. 11th is only 16 days away, and Funimation would've said something about this since it is a pretty big sale item. I'm guessing that we will get something like this sooner or later, anyways didn't Funimation say that they were going to make a big Dragonball announcement at the beginning of next year? This could possibly be what they were going to announce.

EDIT: Found it! It is listed on the Australian DB/Z/GT website. Just click on Dragonball, then release info, then the bottom listing on the menu on the right side of the screen. Hopefully we, in America, will get the same release.

Well, now that it's "confirmed" that this is a Madman release, I guess it's safe to say that we're most likely not getting the release in the US.

But if you scroll down (er, i guess highlight the text forcing it down), you'll se that the set goes all the way up to the end of the Baba Saga. Not too shabby!

Just as a side thing, would the discs be playable on a region free DVD player? Just curious.

I don't know. Just use F11 to make your browser full screen. You can see everything then.
