Good podcast, I liked the topic for this podcast very much, I would like to hear about more about the different types of fans you have met.

Really great Podcast. I can't really pick out one single defining moment, but I liked all of the sexual referances. And the Kamehameha Dump.

Two questions for Julian: 1a: Why did you change your avatar? 1b: How long did you have that Sanji avatar? 2: Why does Julian sound so different live?

I think it's because his voice is usually coming out of EX's computer speakers, and Julian is talking with a microphone connected to his computer, but I could be wrong.

This is by far the best podcast yet. It sounded great, and I liked that there was a great deal of meat to the conversation. Please consider doing more in depth discussions like this in the future.

Mike, you made a point that I’m always bringing up to people. I work as a reporter for a daily paper here in Georgia, and I’m always getting into conversations with the sports guys as to who the bigger nerd is. I’ve used the argument that someone dressing up in a Federation outfit is no different than someone painting themselves for a game. Of course, they tell me the difference is that painting the body for a game is a show of support. I tell them nerd is as nerd does.

I think stuff like science fiction, comic books, and anime get a bad rap, because historically, it’s attracted what could be described as social misfits. I’m not trying to be derogatory in the least, but people that feel that they don’t belong in any mainstream setting are the ones drawn to genre entertainment. Anime is just the most recent example of this. Genre entertainment tends to be the only place to get extraordinary characters, extraordinary stories and best of all, a strong mythology. Law and Order may be great shows, but you don’t get the rich worlds that you do with shows like Buffy, Alias, Battlestar Galactica and Lost.

However, I think that with the continued homogenization of pop-culture, it’s becoming OK to be a hardcore fan of a genre entertainment. You mentioned Buffy the Vampire Slayer as being the catalyst, and I also agree that the internet combined with more channels on TV to choose from have helped to explode not only established fandom, but to breed new sources as well. Save for the truly obsessed fanboy, I’ve noticed that being “geek chic” is in right now.

And as far as DragonBall goes, I never received any animosity from anyone until the last few months. At AWA, someone got seriously belligerent that I would not only be into the show, but that I would have dropped $30 on the Daizenshuu. It really blew my mind.

Oh, well, great show and keep up the good work.

First of all, Mike, thank you VERY MUCH for the Linkin Park analogy. That made me feel a LOT better. Actually, I've often used that as a similiar example with how you've described DBZ as "It's fun to love AND make fun of!" I'll still use Linkin Park's "Crawling" as the typical 'emo theme song' for certain jokes and what-not, but that doesn't mean I don't love their music.

I heavily agree with the "the fanboys turned me off!" bullshit. I've seen that happen SO much with Inuyasha. People don't see that Inuyasha has some really good traits to it that's made it as popular as it is, and YES it has its problems, just like shows like Dragonball have, but people let other peoples' opinions sway them TOO much, and then the interest will totally die (sometimes before they even SEE something). But I'm glad this episode was made. The whole discussion describes so many of the retarted things I've come across with through being into anime for the past years.

Nice with the random thank you to FUNimation at the end, Julian XD; Can't wait for the Sparking! NEO review.

Hearing about fandoms reminds me of when I told a friend of mine from Japan about the Digi-Poké War. His response, "People argued about that?"

Now that I think of it, I liked the Dragon Ball commercials that CN used to do like the King Piccolo saga and the whole Old Man Roshi getting off the toilet.

Heh, I'm going to personally ask Sean "what the hell!?". Speaking of the topic on hand I remember watching the short lived Dragonball dub in 1996 and that's what got me hooked. When DBZ returned through Ocean group on YTV here in Canada I got a case of nostalga. The rest is history... Still I have also gotten hooked on Naruto which is also a Shonen manga/anime. I geuss I'm just a big kid.

Great podcast as usual!

That is freaking GOLD XD; Well let's not forget that before he got casted as Goku, the only other 'acting' job he ever got was in a puppet show for a friend of his :B I met him for a sec at the recent AnimeNEXT actually, he was really nice. Tech-savvy too, he did the dubbing studio panel with Mike Sinterniklaas and Catilin Glass. Lotta fun.

Oh and in regards to the podcast, I stupidly forgot one really important comment. In regards to why people wouldn't instantly go searching for the original if they know what they're watching is an adaptation. Personally, I seem to relate to English dubs a lot easier. I definitely don't DISlike Japanese episodes at all, I watch plenty and enjoy them just as well, but my usual routine is if there's a dub of a show, I'll usually seek that out and watch that first and foremost. Unless it's a show that is so DRASTICALLY altered from its original format (I don't count DBZ for this because the dub and I go way back), or if its a show I know'll NEVER come to America, I'll go and seek out the Japanese episodes. Otherwise, I buy all of my episodes on DVD and then will watch them in English. In fact, I got into Naruto and Bleach mostly through when they premiered on Cartoon Network. Plus I'm also a fan of english voice actors. I know all of that seems out of place for regular anime fans, but yeah ^^;

Same goes for me, but anime I watch generally have welldone dubs. The only anime I watch with subs is Dragon Ball and my Engrish Sonic X DVDs (Hey, 4kids doesn't put out Japanese with subs and the dub is censored, has changed dialouge, and most if not all music is changed, I feel okay buying bootlegs of it, but not for other shows.)

Exactly. If they'd MAKE uncut DVDs then I'd have all the reason to go out and buy them...but no. Let's restrict people from what they want!...fansubs AWAY. I wouldn't look for fansubs of a show I know is already out, or is in the middle of coming out, because I can easily just see it then.
