Why are people so harsh to GT?

Post by goku 333 » Wed Nov 01, 2006 4:02 pm

It seems like most of the Dragonball fandom really dislikes GT. I think that we need to cut GT some slack (please hear me out before you have a massive go at me).

First of all I do have to say, YES GT is not as good as Dragonball or DBZ. I myself have seen al 64 episodes, and when I first started watching it I thought to myself “This is the biggest bunch of crap I have ever seen”. Things like turning Goku into a kid and changing the colours on Shenron just seemed like recycled ideas. But for me the show became really enjoyable in the Super 17 saga, funny enough I hate Super 17 and how two androids who look exactly the same can fuse into something completely different. But it was everything else about it: I love movie 12 and it was so cool seeing everyone come back from the dead again (which really is another recycled idea, but it was an interesting one), I loved seeing every one fight again even if it was for a short wile.

But the best bit about it was defiantly the last 10 episodes or so, when both Goku and Vegeta turned SSJ4, when Omega Shenron absorbed all the Dragonballs and Goku and Vegeta Fused into SSJ4 Gogeta and kicked the crap out of him with super cool moves. That was defiantly the best moment in GT it was in my opinion what we were used to seeing in DB/Z and if the show would have been more like that and les chasing random dancing people around the universe it would of gone on much longer.

So cut Dragonball GT some slack, well certain bits of it!

"Phantom?" Do you mean "fandom?"

Anyhoo, there's already a current topic on GT, right here

*nods* But I think I'll give my two cents here anyway. I guess we could all give GT some slack, but the fact is 75% of it is complete.... FILLER... CRAP!!! I don't mind the other 25% but the rest can go to hell. *shudders*

75% + 15%=90%. So what is the other 10%? :)

In my opinion, GT tried to merge the lightheartedness of the original, and the over the top action of Z. Honestly, I think it just got stale after a while. Like when gum looses its flavor.

It's funny, but like 90% of the people here in Canada who hate GT (that I've spoken to I mean), never even saw the original "DB" (which I always loved).

So for them it must have been quite a shock to go from DBZ to DB again. But the only way to really apreciate GT is to have seen the first 2 series first (you just "get" all the jokes. <there are so many in jokes and classic nods to the past DB. Even more than nods to DBZ i'd say>)

GT is just lame. So many things are wrong...How does an android come back from hell? He was never alive! Plus Goten and Trunks sensed him...You can't sense androids. *insert sweatdrop and swift anime fall*

I also think part of the GT hate stems from the lack of Toriyama involvement. So that to them it holds as much water as an animated fanfic.

Before I start, why is it that people are starting threads from other threads with basically the same statements being said? I'm very confused.. :? Anyway, quoting oneself seems pretty stupid, so I'll link you to what I put in another thread. If you are too lazy to read what I put, I basically noted that one of the more obvious reasons GT isn't favored among DB fans is because it isn't canon.

Thank God for us aspiring FanFiction authors, eh? I also always say that one of the nice things about GT is that all those plotholes and inconsistencies are just begging to be filled and corrected within the world of fanfiction. It's the series most open for the fans.

I've never had much of an issue with Dragon Ball GT. I've barely watched much of the series, save the Shadow Dragons arc, which was pretty good =D

I do think most of the hate stems from the lack of Toriyama involvement, and the plot holes and inconsistencies. But hey, nothing's perfect (That's why there are such things as 'fans')

Um....then wouldnt that make all DBZ fans hate every single movie?

+ 2 : Don't even start the canon argument. It's so incredibly stupid it's not even funny.

(there is no "official DB canon", except for Fan boys out there trying to justify their opinions in the most vague way possible.) Damn, the IDEA of canon is extremely flawed from the get go and if people like George lucas or the Star Trek/Paramount guys had never made a big deal of "what's canon or not" , no one would be trying to copy the idea into every single show ever created.

Can you believe that people spend hours arguing if the "GBA Sonic" games are CANON???? Come on people, this brings "not having a life" to a new low. (And people actually convince themselves of the validity of a "Sonic canon" ....when no creator in the history of that franchise ever meant for the events to be set up in an official timeline while having every game try it's hardest to not contradict the "narrative" of the first 3 Sonics.

Give me a break.

that's actually 1 of the things that DBZ didnt have. Over there everything is so detailed and specific that it leaves almost nothing for fans to discuss.

IE: You KNOW that Goku is WAAYYYY stronger than Vegeta by the end of Buu, so there's no point in arguing "who would win?"

You KNOW exactly the ranking of fighters and how strong they are.

While in GT- (mostly because of lazy writting IMO) But you can actually argue that Super 17 can potentially be the strongest Villain in DB history (had he survived the Goku fight, and if the Shadow Dragons wouldve have been summoned, Super 17 would have been MUCH stronger than any Dragon and at about the level of The last dragon (when he absorbs the balls). <<<plus I'm sure Yi Xing Long would have thrown a few large Ki shots at him , making him about 100X stronger than before>>>

- Also the way SSJ4 is shown, it aparently isnt TOO much stronger than SSJ3 <not too dramatic a charge>. I always thought that it was just a more stable version............etc etc etc

etc etc

Says "Vegeta 4" on a DragonBall Z forum...

Seriously, fuck off. Some people want to understand what is, and is not, part of the official record of events in a fictional story. It's not pathetic, it's a hobby. Shitting on someone because you don't like their hoddy is pathetic.

I'm so confused right now its not even funny. Vegeta4, I'm not sure about Star Wars, but there is a pretty solid view of canon in the DragonWorld. With that being said, I think Sonic is fun. I hope that helps. :o

One of the more pointless things I ever posted, yet in this thread doesn't look that bad. Think about that.

That sounds more like a statement on Z, rather than GT.

But really, none of GT is "filler" in the same sense as the other two Dragonball series. "Filler" refers to the 'extra stuffs' padded into the anime to keep it from catching up to the manga. With GT, there is no manga to "catch up" with, so..... filler is impossible.

Changing tracks, I agree with the comment that much of the GT bashing comes from the "Toriyama didn't write it" mentality. If he had written it, and it was pretty much the same, there would be far less bashing going with it. Any one of GT's so-called 'plot holes' are quickly dismissed with "bah, it's GT", and yet, any plot holes from the other DB series get tons of threads on them... just look at how many threads there are on how many timelines there are(or that other nonsense, like taking a trip to the moon, gets ignored).

As tired as this topic is, I, in my infinite hubris, am going to respond yet again as if people care.

My hate of GT has nothing to do with the fact that Toriyama was not significantly involved (though I have my suspicions that if he had been, it wouldn't have sucked as bad) and it has nothing to do with the fact that it has blaring inconsistencies, because in the interest of entertainment who really cares? I hate this show because it is a lifeless, plotless, piece of crap. If I had only been interested in the fighting aspect of the series I MIGHT almost have been placated by the action later on in the series, but frankly, the action sucked as well: The techniques were uninventive and there was far to much repetition for my taste.

I might have felt a little better towards it if the series had just ended after the first 16 episodes with the crew finding all the dragonballs and saving the earth, but no, they had to go and try to make real villains at which they failed miserably in everything from design to motivation. I couldn't bring myself to even care about the outcomes of the fights.

I couldn't even get attached to the characters anymore! Gokuh was reduced to some obnoxious retard who could only ask hen his next meal would be (in other words, his quirks were totally exaggerated) and of course we get Pan! The emotional little brat who degrades what little dignity the women of Dragonball might have had with her whining, weeping, and contemptuous overconfidence.

To anyone who says you need to watch the original Dragonball to appreciate GT, I say WRONG! It's a comparison between the two that makes GT seem so crappy.

I will say that I did enjoy the last episode and even cried over it but still, that only says that the best part of GT was went it ended.

Thats a little harsh, I understand what your saying but he is entitled to his own opinion and shouldn't be downsized for it.
