Episode #0050! VegettoEX, Meri, and Julian compare the rivalry of Goku and Vegeta to other DB rivalries, and those within many other series (Ranma, Gundam, One Piece, Naruto, etc.). Gaming and music news, DBZ ABCs, your e-mails, and more round out the episode! Referenced sites: Whee! Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the monumental *fifty* episodes, now.

w00t. Here we go. All up for you. I've got a couple more images to go (one more for the Top 5 list, and two more for the "Welcome" comparisons), but I've gotta go... so this will do for now :P. Let us know your thoughts on the topic! I really want these threads to be actual relevant conversations related to the episode's content.

Oh yeah... Julian's audio sucks this episode. We know. It's been fixed for the future. No worries.

w0rd.

GREAT topic...! I've been wanting to hear about the rivalries. You know when you guys were talking about Naruto and Luffy, and how they wanted to be the Hokage and Pirate King respectively... I never realized it before, but Goku never had any kind of specific goal like that did he?

Mmmm Freeza. LOL... I was laughing so hard.

Whoa first post.

Well kinda little introduction before I say this. I've been listening to your podcast since about episode 20-ish. And I fell in love with it. I've actually had these podcasts on my PSP so I can listen to them at school and such.

Anyways, I really enjoyed this one (What I've listened to so far; 33:23) and I was freaking out about Julian's Char and Amuro rivalry. Once Mike said it was a rivalry older than the ones mentioned, I thought, " What's older than Ranma.. with a distinct good guy bad guy rivalry...". Then Gundam shot into my mind and when I heard him say it I kinda freaked out.

I'm really likin' the cross-show analogies as I've always discussed them with my friends and I really like hearing others discussion on cross-show topics. And this rivalry one worked especially well.

And as I'm typing this I'm listening to this and I LOVE the 'Majin Sasuke vs Naruto' analogy :P

Kinda average-ish episode in my opinion. Though I always like discussions comparing other series, even if I'm not really in the know about some of them (the whole Gundam thing and Ranma...). And yeah, I was totally thinking Majin Sasuke when I was reading that part of Naruto .

Sorry to bring this one up, but another rivalry is Gary and Ash (again, sorry). You've got the dopey kid going up against the spoiled grandson, I haven't really seen the series in a while, so I'll just leave it at that. But the manga version of the series did a pretty good job of inderting the whole rivalry between the two.

Let's hope the anniversary episope (as well as the one before that, I guess) will rock. And one more thing: I was kinda hoping you'd put up the better animated Vegeta/Goku fight when Vegeta was flashbacking during the Chibi Buu fight, but whatever.

And as for my favorite rivalry, I especially liked the Roshi/Crane-Hermit one, since it was the basis for the entire Tenshinhan Saga. The whole passing of grudges from master to pupil was kinda interesting, too.

EDIT: Sorry in advance for the image, but I think this best sums up the Naruto comparison.

Hey guys,
Just listening to the pod-cast, and wanted to bring this point up before i forget later in. On the subject of goku not killing his oponents in the series, and only in movies; we have to remember that was not the case in the original draognball series.
Goku did kill quite a number of people when he was a child, from higher ranking members of the Red Ribbon army to Piccolo Daimao's henchmen.
"Oh dear...."

Hey guy's awsome podcast as ussual and i know a rivalry that is very good. It's from a old old old manga/anime you might have heard about it maybe not, but if you had its called ashita no joe. The two rivals would be yabuki joe and tooru rikiishi. well if you know it good, but for all our readers out there they might not know or have even heard of this classic boxing manga. So lets see ill try to make it short and sweet..... If thats possible hahahaha. Joe and Rikiishi start off in a jeveniel detention center of sorts. Joe not wanting to learn boxing, but when he meets rikiishi he has the burning of a warrior inside him. They hate each other at first they fight. They respect each other. Rikiishi gets sent to the outside world. Joe's sad, start's to get very depressed no competion. Joe get's out as well and starts to train to fight rikiishi. Problem arises due to the weight class joe being a bantam weight fighter rikiishi being a a heavyweight no fight..... awww Rikiishi then pulls out all the stops and gets his weight down to bantam weight. the two fight Rikiishi wins but due to the fight Rikiishi dies. Joe blames himself and just looses the will to fight.

So here it goes my point the two started out like not hating one another. then hate happens, then respect. I know it might not make sense or maybe it does but if anyone wants to hear more or better explenation just say hey.

Side note this was the first and only anime and manga that has a funeral for a character an acctual one.

Episode 129 in the Piccolo Jr. Saga. Basically Goku time travels with Popo's help during his training at Kami's Palace.

Just got the podcast and I'm really liking this topic. The Roshi/Crane screenshot is something that I have never seen before, which makes it one of my favorite top 5's so far. And for the record, anything with a South Park reference is okay imo.

Great podcast as always. Two weeks until the one year anniversary and Wii!

Sensei's talk of the Amuro and Char rivalry made me giddy, but he did get a few things wrong. To review...

Lt. Commander Char Aznable attacked Amuro's home colony in search of the Federation's new MS. Amuro used the Gundam to destroy two Zaku MS and then he helped guide the White Base out of the colony port and there he and Char faced off for the first time. The 'rivalry' was really just a pride-wounded Char trying to hunt down the White Base and beat the 'White MS' because, well, he was prideful of his piloting, I believe. It wasn't until the third movie/late into the TV series where Amuro accidently stabbed Lalah Sune when she moved her Elmeth Mobile Armor in the way of the RX-78-2 Gundam's beam saber. From there on Amuro hated Char for puttin' Lalah in the middle of the war (well, more like the end of the war) and so Amuro blames Char for her death whiel Char just blames Amuro for actually killin' her. Seven years later Char--incognito as Quatro Bajeena--meets with Amuro on Earth as he and Zeta Gundam's protagonist, Kamille Bidan, try to return to space after the AEUG (Julian-sensei, pronounce it ay-oog!! ) dropped from space to attack the Titans HQ, Jaburo. Char tells Amuro that he came to Earth to laugh at Amuro because he hides from the new war because of his fear of space. Char believes Amuro fear space not because of the weightlessness that Amuro claims to fear, but because he fears seeing Lalah's spirit. After reclaiming his mojo, Amuro pilots for the Earth AEUG division Karaba in a Dijeh MS based heavily on the AEUG's Rick Dias, which is based on the Principality of Zeon's Rick Dom, a space model based on the Dom unit that Zeon fielded during the One Year War (OYW), most notably pilot by the Zeon ace pilots the Black Tri-Stars, best known for capturing (then Lt. General) General Revil in the early parts of the OYW. Anywho, Char and Kamille return to Earth again during an attack on Kilimanjaro and Amuro and Char must painfully watch on as they see Kamille mourn over the death of his version of Lalah Sune, Four Marasume a Cyber-Newtype (normal people or regular Newtypes who are genetically altered to be artificial Newtypes) when Kamille's rival, Lt. Jerid Messa of the Titans, kills her, his own comrade. Jerk.

About another 6-7 years later, Char returns to the Earth sphere *ell-bent on dropping Axis, a large asteroid once used as the remnants of Zeon's base, onto Earth. Here, Amuro and his Nu Gundam (Nu as in the Greek symbol) face off against Char's Sazabi MS. After a fierce battle Amuro wins, and with Char's escape pod in hand, he attempts to use the Nu Gundam to push back a falling Axis from sending the Earth into a nuclear winter. With the help of the Federation's GM III MS, Londo Bell's Jegan, and oddly enough Neo Zeon II's Gara Doga MS, Amuro's Nu Gundam's Pscho Frame collects enough will power from all the pilots and Earth is saved from Axis. The Explosion of the Psycho Frame kills Amuro and Char at last ending a 13 year rivalry between the two and the Zeon and Federation.

Mr. Mike, if you wish to jump onto the Gundam bandwagon, I suggest starting with the movies MSG The Movie I, MSG The Movie II: Soldiers of Sorrow, and Movie III Encounters in Space. Sadly only subbed versions are available these days as the original dub (starring Michael Lindsey and Steven Jay Blum in the two starring roles) is harder then heck to find.

On the subject of the Podcast, fun episode, I loved it. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway... great podcast - everything I was going to say was said, basically. I feel... unneeded :(

I liked the Podcast, but I think you guys have Son Goku figured wrong. Yes, the reason he lets Vegeta go is, in more or less his own words, "it would be a waste of such a strong fighter". But I don't believe Goku is completely stupid to the rivalry. He knows Vegeta wants to fight him and prove he is better; I'd say if I had to finger one word on Goku's feelings about the rivalry is that it's flattering. I believe strongly that Son-kun is much wiser than you folks give him credit for. But that's a discussion for another time; It seems to me that throughout the series Goku is aware that the battle in the Buu arc is inevitable, not just because Goku wants to test himself, but he knows Vegeta's pride. To say Goku is innocent to Vegeta's will to defeat him is underestimating him and flat out ignoring a good chunk of their interaction with each other between their two battles with each other (Saiyajin arc and Buu arc, respectively).

Great podcast! Although it sounds like a generic anime podcast discussing rivalries in different anime. Nevertheless, most parts are still about Dragon Ball, so I shouldn't complain.

Who's idea was it to say the lines from South Park at the end? Or did it just popped out of nowhere? I think the mention of Nintendo Wii gave everybody the urge to say something from that hilarious episode.

Wow! More comparisons, i love it! While i dont give a crap about Gundam I'm a big fan of Ranma 1/2, One Piece and Naruto. I especially enjoyed when you dicussed stuff from Ranma 1/2 as i feel that show doesnt get as much attention as it deserve. And i wasent excpecting you to talk about One Piece since there isnt really any rivalrys there (Tashigi and Zoro is probably as near a rivalry you're going to get in One Piece). But i really liked it when you did!

I was excpecting you to talk abou Light and L's rivalry from Death Note since you have said in previous episodes that you're obsesed with Death Note. Still, I'm happy you didnt since i only watch the anime and havent had a chance to read the manga.... What? Dont look at me like that! I know i should buy the manga but i have just used up most of my manga-money (As i like to call it) on Fullmetal Alchemist manga.

Yay for South Park references! And yay for Meri and Julian explaining Goku and Vegetas rivalry in the start of the podcast. That was really funny!

Until like this other guy showed up and told him what was what. And that was really confusing for all partys involved! ~ Meri
Currently playing: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii), Jump Ultimate Stars (DS).

The closest I can think of is in DB movie 2 while Goku's racing Kuririn to Devil's Castle, he shouts "I'm gonna become even stronger than the Turtle Hermit!", echoing a similarity to "I'm gonna become King of the Pirates!" and "Someday, I'm gonna become Hokage!". But yeah, other than that one instance, I can't really think of any goals Goku truly had in a selfish sense, other than training Uub so they could have an all-out battle, and even that was at the end of DBZ. Luffy and Naruto are so selfish. :P
