The early prints for Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball that I have are uncensored and have plenty of curse words. (nothing serious you know, just more "damns" and stuff like that) And it seemed like they really went out of their way to stick to the original manga in some cases, like when they first started doing Yugioh. They could have stuck to the 4Kids names but they went all out and kept everything. (Jonochi, Honda, Anzu instead of Joey, Tristan, Tea, etc.) Then by the time the GX manga comes out, they stick to all the 4Kids dub names which are atrocious. The first four One Piece graphic novels had "Zoro" but then they changed to "Zolo" because of the 4Kids dub...
I keep hearing that VIZ was really bad and now they've gotten better, but it seems to me at one point they really had it down right and then they just effed it all up later on with all kinds of BS policy changes. To my understanding, they started censoring reprints of manga they used to sell uncensored when it started getting more main stream.
I will say it looks like VIZ is getting back to its roots somewhat, especially now that they've gone to weekly digital publications. Now it would be nice to see them correct some of their mistakes from the past, like a new DBZ translation. (though I honestly never had a problem with the original Dragon Ball translation) They did finally start selling unflopped InuYasha books ... lol
I wasn't really talking about name changes and censorship, more about the way they used a more creative translation as opposed to the more literal translations they use today. But yeah, as Mewzard said, they did go back and forth with their policies a bit, but it seems they've stabilized in recent years - in the right place, thankfully.
And yeah, the Dragon Ball translation isn't
that bad, I personally just favor a more literal style of translating. That and it's got some things here and there that... really shouldn't be there. But personally, I'm much more bothered by the name changes and visual edits.
Besides the whole time and money issue, I'm starting to think Viz doesn't want to re-translate the manga because they don't want to open up a precedent. Because if they did it for Dragon Ball, people would start demanding they'd do it to their other older series (and even the more recent onces, just because they didn't agree with the translation) and they'd rather just be saved both the costs and the hassle.
