Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
As much as I enjoy this fiction...it feels a bit pointless to have an official holiday.
Though a few days ago I abruptly heard "May the 4th" stated in the context of another joke ir explanation of some unrelated...thinking back, it was very subtly clever. I totally missed that it was an official day.
This also fits with the new questionnaire with the 5&9
At first I was surprised, but then I saw all the other official days they've made for other pop culture stuff. This is cute. He's my favorite db character, this is nice. :3

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I'm just about done with the concept of reboots and making shows that were products of their time and impactful "new and sexy" and in line with modern tastes and sensibilities. Let stuff stay in their era and give today's kids their own shit to watch.
I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.
If anyone's confused about this, May 9th works as a pun on Goku's name in Japanese, so during the Piccolo arc when Toriyama needed to pick a specific date for when Piccolo took the throne, that's the date he went with. Which leads to this weird "doubled up" thing where May 9th is associated both with Goku (being a pun on his name) and with Piccolo (the date in the series where his older self takes the throne, is defeated by Goku, and reborn as the Junior version featured in the rest of the series).
Here's my post on Goku day with additional photographs from the sources that Anime News Network linked to, and news about the 30th Anniversary logo and celebration. It's going viral, with over 7,000 Likes in 2 hours. Apparently the people out there like Goku.
Herms, according to this wikipedia article, "The Japanese consider nine to be unlucky because in Japanese the word for nine sounds similar to the word for "pain" or "distress" (苦, kyū)."
Do you think that has anything to do with why Toriyama chose this day?

I think the "pun on Goku's name" thing pretty much covers it. Number puns are a big thing in Japanese, and while 4 and 9 are both traditionally considered unlucky, if they tried to avoid them both when making puns they'd obviously be limiting themselves an awful lot.
I'm gonna celebrate Goku Day by eating lots of food and training like crazy.
