Haha, I was reading the earlier posts about DBZ compared to NARUTO and BLEACH. Uh, weren't Kishimoto-Sensei and Taito-Sensei HUGE Toriyama-Sensei fans and have SAID that they were inspired by Dragonball and it influenced the way of their manga? (Also, Oda-Sensei!! (^^) )

Just ask him for examples of shows he thinks don't have repeatable villains, that don't have repeatable plot points, that has vastly different 'super attacks'. Whatever his answer, show him that they are just as repeatable as Dragon Ball.

People usually shut up about "how terrible DBZ is" when you tell them the same about their shows.

Well...his favorite anime is One Piece (yes, the japanese version). Anything I could say about that show?

Don't start fighting with your friend. Just ignore him, as long as you appreciate Dragonball and everything, you shouldn't care.

I was just about to say the same thing myself.

Tho' I am a huge OP fan, muhself...

If all else fails, show him the raw power of DragonBall by nailing him with Goku's Jan-ken.

Also, Oda-Sensei and Toriyama-Sensei are doing that joint manga for 少年ジャンプ!!

Well, my initial respense would be to let it slide (te each his own, etc), but if the guy's got all these factoids going around to prove how much it sucks, then (as mentioned) you should say that pretty much everything is repetetive. You can go back through history and be able to find the same core story of "good guy eventually wins no matter what."

But people always like to know how the good guy wins. It's always the actual details that attract (or repel) your attention.

*reads* Hmm....thank god this guy doesn't know about Dragon Ball AF, eh?
How many other anime have the main character grow up, have a child, get a grandchild!? The story isn't just a bunch of youthful people with powers saving the day. They die! They stay dead! And unlike a lot of other anime, when they come back to life, it's a legitimate long-existing way (the dragonballs) which is used. Unlike others where all of a sudden, some never-before-mentioned ability can bring someone back -_-;
Yeah, but in Dragon Ball, they come back to life in like 5 episodes. [/exaggerating]. Other anime characters actually stay dead for quite a long while. But I see your point.

I usually think that people who dislike Dragonball are ignorant people who do not realize it's set a lot of standards and raised the bar in many things regarding the anime universe.

As I usually think and say in my head, you can dislike the show, but give some respect to it.

You can also remind him that Dragon Ball had a better dub.

Honestly, It's not worth your time to try to "cure" someone's ignorance. If you are dealing with someone who doesn't like the show than that's fine; it's their opinion. But if you see they have nothing to back that up with but have the time to write a paper titled "DBZ Sucks", then you should know by now that you are wasting your breath. Seriously.

I wish to add in opinion! :D

(These numbers are to seperate my points, not to answer the numbered questions)

1) Relax, if DBZ really sucked so bad, Toriyama wouldn't have been all but forced at gun point to stretch it out to the degree it was. So really, it isn't Dragonball's fault... it's the fans from years ago who couldn't get enough of it.

2) It wasn't always all action, and obviously this story was adapted to please people who said 'We want to see more of what was at the Tournament!'. Thus, it went from 'Comedic parody of Journey to the West' to 'It's over 9000!'

3) The characters aren't identical, especially the ones who listed. Piccolo and Vegeta may have started in a similar fashion (Only in that they both wanted to kill Goku) but their stories actually panned out completely different. All Piccolo needed was a friend, and afterwards he took over the wise and formerly powerful role that was Kami. Vegeta, however, went on to have an obsession with becoming more powerful, had a family, and remained moderately angry to the end of the story. Besides... Vegeta is short and Piccolo is tall...
And how can you think Goku and Gohan are the same? Even for being Father and Son, those two never really seemed all that similar. Let's face it, Goku is an idiot who only went places for the chance to hit something harder than he's ever hit something before. Gohan, however, is the scholar who only saved the day after he was forced to, and eventually gave up fighting.

My only problem is that far too many of the characters are quickly left behind in the dust and are suddenly of no use to anyone.

4) As for all the super attacks being basically the same... that's just a stereotype brought about by Sparking!... :P

I know there are many anime technically better than Dragon ball. But the reason why I and so many world wide love it so much is because it has a : "charm" that many shows dont have.

For example, things that have nothing to do with the main story but make you love the characters even more. There are so many special and classic character moments that it makes me love this show until I die.

The whole gun point thing has been overused & raped so many times it's not even funny anymore. I just don't think that's true, I believe Shueisha was really behind the force that drove Toriyama to continue the series. Shueisha being driven by the fans support & love for the series, they saw it as a financial & economic benefit for their company. Dragon Ball is a pop culture icon now.

I really hope nobody takes that gunpoint thing literally. I see it as a funny "not-so urban" legend (not that violence is funny..eh, who am I kidding). If anything, he was probably stuck with a contract or something. And in the end, wouldn't Mr.T file a police report or something? I'm not sure about you guys but if my life and the lives of my family were in danger due to crazy fanboys, my next coarse of action wouldn't be to draw some more manga.. :P

Er... right, suffice to say... I didn't mean the gun point comment literally... In fact, I said "all but" gun point.. meaning.. no gun point.. :?
