The "Mirage Saiya-jin" name snafu

Post by The S » Wed Dec 27, 2006 12:31 am

Way back, years ago, I discovered a site (I think it was SSJ4Kain's for those of you who know him), that gave the names of the two "Mirage Saiya-jin" as Pumpkin and Brock. And that was what I had referenced them as, despite the confusion of others, until the day it was revealed that their names were actually K/Collifum and Saegi.

However, recently, I came across this site:
http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/nes/ ... mies.shtml

Lo and behold, Pumpkin and Brock.

Not only that, but there was also an Onion (pallette swapped Pumpkin) - who went OOZARU!

Of course, each of the vegetables that these Saiya-jin were based on were also used by other Saiya-jin later on (Pumbkin, Broli, and Onio respectively).

EDIT: I changed the title to better suit the discussion.

Whoa, so these random Saiyan filler guys have actual names? Can this be taken as any kind of official source?

More original enemy names
from the "Dragon Ball Z"
Famicom video games.

... Huh? How was that revealed?

Well, there were lots of palette swaps in these games, so I don't even know if you could tell that these are the Saiyans shown in the anime for sure. Besides, you get to fight them before Raditz, apparently...

I'm simply stated that this is where the names they were previously referenced as came from.

I think it was mentioned on these boards some time ago. It's on Wikipedia currently.

(Hears groans from everyone)

I know, I know. But the names don't seem to have been challenged and they were added some time ago.

Well, it's impossible to challenge something with a complete lack of evidence. Then again, there's the challenge right there.

If those two were honestly given names that were to apply to them outside of a single video game, they would have been referenced that way in the recent guide books.

Lots of shit is made up for the games, I wouldn't consider it official, though. In Daizenshuu 7 on page 110 they're simply referred to as Maboroshi no Saiya-jin, Illusion Saiya-jin. In the credits they're just called "Saiya-jin".

サイヤ人 - Saiya-jin - Gouri Daisuke - 郷里大輔
  " - " " - Kishino Yukimasa - 岸野幸正

Unless they were given names in the script (which would have most likely been used in the credits), I'd just consider them bunk. Especially since these names turned up later in the series.

Well, I've asked that it be sourced in the list of Saiya-jin talk page.

Either way, I still feel good about finding the Brock/Onion/Pumpkin thing.

Good find! True or not, at least we have names to call both of them as individuals. Even though its just from a game... at least its something.

I always felt stupid calling them Brock and Pumpkin because everybody was like "WtF?". Now at least I have a source for their names...

(Unlike Collifum and Saegi)

Well, it's actually "Brocco" ("burokko" in kana, anyway)...
And again, are they really supposed to be the ones in the anime, or are they just random "palette swapped" Saiyans?

Kollifum
An anime-filler Saiyan, Kollifum is a tall, muscular Saiyan with long brown hair and greyish skin. In the Saiyan Saga, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, Kuririn and Chaozu use the Pendulum Room to travel to the past and fight two Saiyans to prepare for the arrivals of Nappa and Vegeta. Kollifum, along with Saegi, encounters the four warriors until they are ultimately defeated after putting up a valiant but futile fight.

His name is a pun on "cauliflower".

Saegi
An anime-filler Saiyan, Saegi is a short, bald Saiyan with navy blue hair around his head and two scratches on his face. In the Saiyan Saga, Tien, Yamcha, Krillin and Chiaotzu use the Pendulum Room to travel through time and face two Saiyans from the past. Saegi, along with his friend Kollifum, battles the four warriors until they are all ultimately defeated after putting up a valiant but futile fight.

His name is a pun on "sage".

Those names sound pretty good. Any actual source? For that?

I tried several possible kana spellings for "kollifum" on Google Japan, and I wasn't exactly shocked to find absolutely nothing.
I'm pretty sure these names are fan-made.

Brocco does make more sense considering the pun, and calling him "Brock" makes it sound like a dubbed Pokemon character.

But I think these guys are supposed to represent the Saiya-jin from the anime. Onion is possibly the only one actually pallete swapped (his base form from Pumpkin, his Oozaru from Vegeta's).

Why not the other way around?

I'm sticking with Onion being the pallete swap, since he has an Oozaru form, and Pumpkin doesn't; flawed logic, I know, but it's better than nothing.
