If FUNimation were to release this special and title it the same as the Japanese title I would expect them to use “Heya” in the beginning of the title as apposed to the much more popular translation “Yo”, and here’s why:

*Note: This is not based off of or a result of Kanzentai’s preference of “Heya” over “Yo”.

Dragonball Z episode 121 “Ossu!! Hisashiburi… Kaettekita Son Gokū" was translated into “Heya!! It’s been a while… Son Goku and Friends Return” by FUNimation. 'Os' is roughly a slang version of hello, similar to 'yo', 'hi' or 'hey'. “Ossu” is simply adding a syllable to the end of that slang word, and since there is nothing you can really add to 'yo' or 'hi', 'hey' seems to be the most logical translation, with “Heya” being the translation of “Ossu”.

Note that I am not an expert on Japanese or translating, so if any sees anything wrong with this analysis please let me know.

I should note that on Kanzentai, the preference of "Heya" is more of my preference than anything else. Herms may have a differing opinion on how he'd translate it, so I won't throw him under the bus. "Yo", "Hey", "Heya", etc. are all good translations of the expression. I just like "Heya" because I think it sounds more like something Goku would say if he said it in English.

I know that "os" is not a real word in the Japanese dictionary, but it is still used (especially by Goku) and still has a meaning and definition, just not a proper one. It's very similar to the word "wuzzup" and how it isn't aproper word yet it is commonly used; and how a few years back "aint" was not in the dictionary yet was an accepted word that meant "is not/will not". All in all, "Ossu/Os" is a word, just a slang word.

I understand that the word is "Ossu", but in most dialects, including English and Japanese, words are often slurred and only partially pronounced such as "ight" for "alright" and "wussup" for "what is up" and "gonna" for "going to" and "os" for "ossu" in redneck/hick societies of each culture.

Yeah, I don't have any real preference for how to translate it. "Yo", "Hey", "Heya", or any other informal English greeting are all fine.

The '-su' sound in Japanese has a tendency to be a bit less voiced than the spelling would suggest (Which is rather apparent with polite verbs that end in -masu or the word 'desu'). I get what you're saying, but considering that the same pronunciation of the syllable appears in the sorts of things you'd say to your superiors... ^^.
(That considered, though, Goku does tend to screw around with pronunciations. )

Yeah, they're both used. But the "kanji version" of the word would be "osu". Even if the kanji were an afterthought.
And there's no "os".

The problem is, however much it SOUNDS like it's 'os', it's absolutely impossible to render 'os' in Japanese. Well, unless they use alphabet, and that sort of nullifies the whole point. The 's' MUST come with a vowel, that's how it works. Like many have said, when Japanese people use 'desu' it's virtually always pronounced 'des(s)'; I've never really heard anyone say 'des-oo' except maybe some old-fashioned Kyoto speech, perhaps, and first-week students. People don't really seem to be able to get their heads around the difference between 'osu' and 'ossu', either ^^;
