RE: still watching speed subs.

When Herms, Emma, and Adamant -- three people who understand the language -- are telling you that speed subs are terrible, and that you should wait for DragonTeam, I'd say it's probably worth listening to them. If you're relying on subs, you probably don't speak Japanese. Maybe it's wise to listen to those who do?

The Fact Checker exists because of speed subs. Most of the lines that get pulled week after week are in there because a group screwed them up somewhere. Funnily enough, most of the corrected lines in the checker are from DragonTeam's translation. As I said, there's one good translation right now. Be patient, and use it.

The other groups don't care about accuracy. They shit out a translation so people will flock to their ad-infested website, simply because they were first. They've been offered help by competent translators, but they turned it down because it would mean waiting a few extra hours. They just don't care.

I think the best way to watch it now, until we get official subs is to watch it raw and then just read the summary in the new episode thread. What I usually do, though, is read the summary FIRST and then, when I watch the episode I kinda know what they are talking about and, since DB is more about situational comedy rather than outright jokes, stuff like that doesn't really get lost. I might change though to the first way I described it, after we get to new NEW stuff (as in, not covered by the manga, because I am thinking of dropping it), though I am still on the fence about it, since I will still watch the NEPs anyway, so I will know half the content already anyway.

Then, if later down the road I have to check something regarding the episode I would probably watch an accurate sub. However, most of the important stuff is covered in this thread, so that doesn't happen often.

Open up the new episode thread and read the summary, which is usually up by the time I come here at brunch time and then just watch the subbed episode in the evening and you can just tell from the summary, if something's wrong and interesting lines tend to get translated by Herms on twitter, before he and others put in a big effort to get the important stuff in here.

I've kept myself to this thread, and have not gone outside this thread to spread the questionable lines from fansubs ever since early on, when Super just began and a silly fansub talked nonsense about SS Goku not being enough to defeat Freeza.
And again this thread just is for setting things straight in regards to what is said, as the OP specifically welcomes us to just ask away.

Hmm, evidently there is some to that. I just don't know to what extent. I don't recall us mentioning specific fansubs and where to watch them, just acknowledging that they are out there and some are really bad, but are released within 12 hours, while others are excellent, but take a little while longer to get released.
So I don't know, it's a bit hard to avoid that subject matter, when this thread is here to question those dubious subs' translations in the first place.

What does the staff say to this?

Significance: Establishes everything. This also marks the first mention of the "eighth solar calendar" in the anime. Assuming things play out the same way, the divine calendar from chapter 7 should be mentioned soon. Perhaps these two calendars work together somehow?

Vados: "We spent all that time gathering up an entire six wish orbs, and if we lose, they will..."
Champa: "You saw how that guy moved, right? The sluggish reaction from that 'Goku' fellow! Their team will be made up of guys on his level, so it'll be an easy win. Universe 7's Earth and delicious foods will all belong to Universe 6!"

Significance: Like in the manga, Champa underestimates Goku and Vegeta because of their sluggish movements, caused by Whis' heavy training suits. Later, Champa is shown to be certain that his yet-to-be-made team will win.

Context: Bulma is asked if she could make something to find the Super Dragon Balls.

Bulma: "If I modify the Dragon Radar and strengthen its sensitivity, it should be possible, I think. But... We have a much easier way, don't we? We can gather the Earth's Dragon Balls and have Shenlong tell us where the Super Dragon Balls are."
Vegeta: "I see."
Goku: "That's it!"

Significance: This anime-only scene indicates that Shenlong is active again, meaning at least one year has passed since Freeza was revived (and by extension, at least 8 months have passed since Freeza's defeat). Since Pan has already been born, Bra needs to show up pretty quickly, or things are going to get awkward.

Vados: "This juice is made entirely from the Niga-Niga vegetables of Planet Yargo."

Significance: "Niga-Niga" likely comes from the word Nigai, meaning bitter, hence Champa's reaction after drinking it. Any similarity to any other words is an awkward coincidence. Yargo (ヤーゴ/yaago) probably comes from gōya (ゴーヤ), which is Okinawan for "Bitter Melon" (にがうり/nigauri in Japanese). Some groups didn't understand the original line, claiming the juice was made up of ordinary "fruits and vegetables".

Context: On the nameless planet, Vados creates an atmosphere.

Champa: "What lovely air!"
Vados: "I tried to replicate the refreshing air of the highlands on Planet Sorert."

Significance: Planet Sorert most likely gets its name from the word "Resort".
ゾリート星/Zoriito-sei, リゾート/rizooto.

This scene shows that Vados can materialize a wide range of things, from food stands to a pleasant atmosphere. While some have taken this to mean she and Whis are "Creation Gods", that role is served by the Kaioshin according to Battle of Gods and Toriyama. Vados' abilities here are really just a fancier version of characters like Piccolo or Kaio's ability to materialize objects.

Bulma: "Hey, Shenlong... Please tell us where in Universe 6 the final Super Dragon Ball is."
Shenlong: "I cannot. The universe is vast. I am not so all-powerful that I can search out a single object that could be anywhere in the universe. Let alone something in a different universe..."
Beerus: "I see. So that is the limit of the Earth's Dragon Balls."
Bulma: "So things won't work out that easily... Well then. I'll go and make that Super Dragon Radar as originally planned."

Significance: Yet another example of Shenlong's limitations. One would think Bulma would save herself the trouble & simply wish for a Super Dragon Radar. Perhaps she just really wanted to make it herself?

Context: Shenlong goes away, after being told to leave by Beerus.

Goku: "I forgot to have him revive Kaiō-sama!"
Bulma: "You can do that next time, right?"

Significance: This is becoming a running joke in Super, although in the manga Kaio didn't really seem concerned with coming back to life.

Whis: "A fighter on the Universe 7 team, picked out by Beerus-sama."

Beerus: "Yeah. He's freakishly strong. Monaka is the absolute strongest person I've ever fought."

Significance: In Battle of Gods, Beerus mentions that Goku is the second strongest person he's ever fought, with a heavy implication that Whis was the strongest. However, in Dragon Ball Super Beerus reveals that this Strongest Person is actually an alien by the name of Monaka.

Goku: "Yo! You're up early. Is that..."
Vegeta: "The Super Dragon Radar."
Goku: "For real?! To think you made it in just one night..."

Significance: Obviously, a day has passed. Also, Bulma works super quickly. While probably not an intentional reference, this scene has a strong Dr. Slump feel to it, since Senbei was always staying up all night to crank out his latest invention.

Bulma: "That God of Destruction Champa sure is stupid. I mean, if the Super Dragon Balls really can grant any wish, then he wouldn't need to hold any martial arts matches. He could just perfectly duplicate the Earth. Or he could wish for delicious food every day."
Beerus: "No matter how smart you may be, your mindset is still that of a human. To us Gods of Destruction, the Super Dragon Balls are nothing more than an excuse to start a fight. Think about it; Universe 6 and Universe 7 are counterparts. If we were to search, we might find Super Dragon Balls in this universe as well."
Beerus: "Gods don't go making wishes. If someone forces me to make a wish, I'll just ask for every single world to be erased! That would be fun enough to give me shivers."
Goku: "If you did that, you wouldn't be able to eat tasty food anymore."
Vegeta: "What fun would there be in a desolate world?"
Beerus: "Good point."

Significance: A few things here:

Beerus and Champa enjoy fighting each other by means of competition. Last episode, we had a food showdown (which is a pastime of theirs in the manga), and now we're getting the upcoming martial arts matches.

In the manga characters initially believe that U6 and U7 contain their own complete sets of Super Dragon Balls, but it is later revealed by Zuno that there is only a single set of seven balls, spread throughout both universes. In this episode characters likewise assume there are two sets of Super DBs, but most likely the anime will follow the manga and eventually reveal that there is really only one set.

While the others think Beerus' remark about erasing all worlds was in jest, Bulma doesn't buy it, which prompts her to call a certain someone...

Bulma: Didn't [Jaco] say that since he helped get rid of the Freeza Army back then, he got his spaceship replaced with the latest model?

Tights: He was really proud of it.

Significance: Jaco was given a fancy new spaceship in recognition of his role in taking care of Freeza. It looks pretty much the same as his old one. Since Jaco did barely anything in the RF arc, the fact that he was rewarded (presumably by the the Galactic Patrol) for his actions implies some Mr.Satan-style deceit. Incidentally, the design of the new space ship is different between the manga and anime.

"Planet Sadla" sounds a lot more Toriyama-esque than "Planet Salad", so chances are "Salad" was just a typo in the manga. Toriyama's names rarely used words as is.

It is possible that Toriyama didn't actually specify a pun, but just made a note that it should be something based on "Planet Salad". Toyotarō may have just gone with that as-is because Toei hadn't rearranged the name yet. We may never know...

Significance: While this wasn't brought up when the rules were actually being decided, according to Vegeta, fusion is against the rules.

Context: Gohan wants to join Universe 7's team.

Gohan: "During my fight with Freeza, I realized that if I truly want to protect the things that matter to me, I need to be strong. Fighting the competitors from Universe 6 is a good opportunity. Please let me participate as well."
Goku: "Alright! Well then, Whis-san will come to pick us up in four days."
Gohan: "In four days?! Four days... I'm sorry, Dad. I can't go after all. There's a conference that day that I absolutely cannot miss."

Significance: While Gohan is initially excited by the opportunity to participate, he's ultimately unable to attend due to professional obligations. This was also the case in Chapter 7 of Toyotaro's manga adaptation.

Context: The group discusses their training plans.

Piccolo: "You're planning to go to the Room of Spirit and Time, right?"
Goku: "I heard Dende's fixin' it."
Piccolo: "Yeah. Though it won't be finished before tomorrow."

Goku: "Vegeta, you're goin', right?"
Vegeta: "Going with you is out of the question."
Goku: "Don't be like that! We have three days, so that means we'll be able to train for three whole years!"

Significance: Previously, you could only spend 48 hours inside of the Room of Spirit and Time before the door vanishes, locking you inside forever. While it isn't spelled out here, the implication is that Dende modified the previous limitations of the room, like he did with Shenlong in the Cell arc. As of now, these new limitations (assuming any remain) are unknown.

Vegeta: "We're already close to the limit of our strength. To be honest, no matter how much more we keep training, we only have very slight room for growth."
Goku: "What're you sayin'? There's that Monaka guy Beerus called the strongest he had fought. Even if we can only grow a little bit, if we don't try, we'll never close the gap between us and him!"

Significance: Apparently, Vegeta believes that he and Goku are reaching the upper-limit of their potential. No reason is given as to why.

Context: Zuno explains the origin of the Super Dragon Balls.

Zuno: The Super Dragon Balls, also called wish orbs, are perfect spheres with a diameter of 37,196.2204km created by the dragon-god Zalama in Year 41 according to the Divine Calendar. Within these seven pale yellow orbs, there are between one and seven red starfish marks. These red starfish marks are Zalama-original constructions that utilize refraction to form a starfish shape regardless of the angle you look at them from, patented in Year 42 according to the Divine Calendar.

Zuno: If you gather up all seven orbs that are scattered across the two universes, and chant "Appear, Divine Dragon, and grant my wish, pretty peas" in the language of the gods, the Divine Dragon will emerge, and grant but a single wish, whatever that wish may be. And once that wish has been granted, the orbs will once again disperse throughout both universes, and wait patiently for the time when they are once again gathered by one who holds an impossible dream. Did you get that?

Mistranslations:
• "Wish orbs" was mistranslated as "the spheres of desire".
• The diameter specified (37,196.2204km) was mistranslated as "they are 47196 years old, 2205KM in diameter"
• Zalama was rendered "Zaraman" for seemingly no reason.
• Zalama patenting his design was omitted.
• The mention of "refraction" was omitted.
• The mention of "the language of the gods" was omitted.
• The "pretty peas" joke was omitted. Instead of saying choudai/please, you say chonmage/topknot, turning it into a low-effort dad joke as Bulma later quips.

Significance: This extremely important explanation reveals that the Super Dragon Balls are spread out across both universes, rather than each Universe having its own set as Beerus suggested last episode.

Galactic Patrol HQ: "Calling all officers. There has been an eat-and-run incident at Galactic Coordinates 6-A-53. The culprit is a wanted repeat offender of eat-and-run crimes, Burpman.""

Mistranslations:
• Eat-and-run (as in, a dine-and-dash) was mistranslated as a generic "theft".
• "Galactic Coordinates 6-A-53" was mistranslated as "6E-53 of the Milky Way".
• Burpman (Geppuman, with geppu meaning "burp") was mistranslated as "Gekkeman".

Galactic Patrol HQ: "We just observed the explosion of Galactic Natural Monument 654 at your present coordinates! Officer Jaco, please report back immediately!"
Jaco: "O-Oh! Burpman destroyed the natural monument! I'm going after him!"

• The "Natural Monument" that Jaco destroys (and pins on Burpman) was mistranslated as "Natural Meteor".

Goku: "What? Didn't you say Saiyans stay young till they're eighty?"
Vegeta: "That was just physically speaking."

Significance: In a recent interview, Toriyama mentioned that Saiyans stay youthful until a "certain age", and then rapidly grow frail. According to Vegeta, that certain age is around 80 years old.

Context: Goku and Vegeta emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time, bearded and smelly.

Goku: "So sorry! In there, your sense of time ends up a bit off. But thanks to that, we got tons of trainin' done."
Bulma: "You stink! You two, go take a shower already!"

This amusing scene was met with a bit of confusion. "I thought a Saiyan's hair doesn't change!"

The line this idea originates from is:

純粋なサイヤ人は 頭髪が 生後から不気味に変化したりはしない···
A pure Saiyan's hair stays the same from birth, and does not go through any weird changes...

The word for "hair" that Vegeta uses (頭髪/tōhatsu) refers to the hair on top of your head specifically. Viz was a bit more liberal with their translation, which might be reponsible for some of the confusion. It's also worth pointing out that Toriyama himself is the one behind Vegeta's mustache in Dragon Ball GT, as well as King Vegeta's goatee.

Boo: "I farted."
Goten: "Don't do that in such a cramped area!"
Mr. Satan: "He truly is Majin Boo."

Significance: The joke here being that Buu is the Japanese sound effect for a fart, a connection joked about in the main series a few times as well.

Significance: Well, this is a fact checker. Consider this fact checked.
Goku wonders if Monaka avoids meat to "stay in shape", meaning in this case to stay the same size.

Kaioshin: "Goku-san. Long time no see."
Goku: "Didn't you say that once you merged, you'd never be able to separate?"
Kaioshin: "We asked the Namekians to use their Dragon Balls to do so. I mean, it did feel rather odd."
Goku: "So that's why I couldn't find your ki no matter how hard I searched."

Significance: Like in the manga, Kaioshin and Kibito separated via the Namekian Dragon Balls. Some are confused as to why Goku couldn't sense him, but that can be easily explained by Kibitoshin "feeling" differently.

Context: Goku approaches two strange-looking people.

Goku: "You guys... Are you the Kaioshins from Universe 6?"
U6 Kaioshin: "Oh... Well, yes."
Goku: "I knew it! Nice meetin' ya!"

Significance: While Goku refers to both (おめえら) as Kaioshins, the March 2016 issue of V-Jump lists the thinner man as the tsukibito/attendant, which is what Kibito is to U7's Kaioshin (and where he gets his name from).

Context: A small boy from Universe 6 approaches Goku and Vegeta, and reveals he is a Saiyan.

Cabba: "I see. So there are Saiyans in your universe, too."
Goku: You don't have a tail... Did you remove it?"
Cabba: What? Tail?"

Significance: In the manga, Cabba claims that the Saiyans of Universe 6 lost their tails over time. In the anime, tails are completely unheard of to him.

Vegeta: "By the way, those clothes of yours... They look a lot like what the Saiyans used to wear before being drafted into the "Freeza Army.
Cabba: "'Freeza'? I'm sorry. I have no idea what you're talking about."

Significance: Reaffirms the idea that twin universes don't house alternate versions of individuals, even if they house the same planets/races. At least as far as we know.

Minute: 17

Vegeta: "Which planet are your Saiyans based at?"
Cabba: "Planet Sadla."
Vegeta: "What?! Planet Sadla still exists?!"
Cabba: "It doesn't in your universe?"
Vegeta: "No. After Planet Sadla was annihilated in a bout of infighting, we stole a different planet which we named Planet Vegeta..."

Significance: In the manga, the Saiyan planet was written as サラダ/Sarada, Salad. In the anime, it was changed to サダラ/Sadara, which is "Salad" rearranged. Whether or not "Planet Salad" will be corrected in the upcoming collected volume remains to be seen.

"Sadal" and "Sadla" are the two most common romanizations floating around, both of which are perfectly acceptable.

Sadal is a straight romanization, and is what Kanzenshuu has gone with:
• Sa·da·ra
• Sa·da·l

Sadla adapts the English word; there's no "da" in Salad when broken up by syllables.
• Sa·la·d
• Sa·d·la

Cabba: "We don't steal planets! Our work generally entails being hired to take out evil-doers."
Goku: "What, you're nice guys? Totally different from what we had."

Significance: Unlike the barbaric planet-conquerers in Universe 7, the Saiyans in Universe 6 are a warrior race of hired heroes.

Context: Majin Buu falls asleep while taking the entrance exam.

Beerus: "What's he doing?! Now we're already down to just four fighters!"
Goku: "There ain't nothin' we can do about it. Once Boo falls asleep, he ain't wakin' up no matter what you do."
Vegeta: "This is why I was against picking him as a fighter."
Goku: "You were the one who suggested doin' a test."

Significance: In the manga, Majin Boo simply failed the test. Here, he falls asleep instead. Like in the manga, he's been disqualified.

Minute: 4
Context Goku is unable to faze Botamo.

Champa: "He's just as pathetic as he looked when I saw him at Beerus' palace."
Cabba: "He and I are both Saiyans, but to think Universes 6 and 7 differ this much..."

Significance: Cabba is surprised at how poorly Goku's faring against Botamo, which implies that he could do better.

Minute: 7

Chichi: "What kind of body does that bear have?!"
Bulma: "That's not all! His legs haven't moved one bit!"
Jaco: "He nullifies all the damage he takes by transferring it into a different dimension."
Bulma: "Really?!"
Jaco: "Probably."
Bulma: "'Probably', huh?"

Significance: Explains – probably – why Botamo is unaffected by Goku's attacks, when Goku is presumably far more powerful than he is. This bit of information was first revealed in lead-up promotional material.

Minute: 13
Context Goku suggests that Frost transforms into his final form.

Frost: "This is my final form."
Champa: "He can transform?!"
Vegeta: "That bastard... What does he mean, 'final form'?! Does he take us for fools?!"
Frost: "Will this do?"
Goku: "Well, okay. It don't look like the one I know, but..."

Significance: Shows that Frost has the same transformation line as Freeza, and that Champa had no idea Frost could transform. Despite Vegeta's reaction, Frost probably does consider this his final form, as he later remarks that he doesn't use his true final form anymore.

Minute: 15
Context The announcer receives new lore updates.

Announcer: "According to the information I just received, the transformation Contestant Frost just underwent is called the Assault Form. In order to stamp out the tragedies of war so prevalant throughout Universe 6, it appears that Contestant Frost leads a peacekeeping force and leaps into hot spots. In these cases, he uses this Assault Form. Contestant Frost devotes himself to postwar recovery efforts and the aid of children, and has won the Universal Peace Prize no less than three times!"

Significance: Similar to the reward Mr. Satan received in Episode 1 (世界平和大賞/World Peace Grand Prize), Frost is said to have won the outer space equivalent three times (宇宙平和賞/Universal Peace Prize). Also, it seems that Frost has named his third form, and is a stand-up guy in general, dedicating himself to protecting innocents.

Minute: 17
Context Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan.

Champa: "What?! Hey, you! Can Saiyans transform?!"
Cabba: "No... I've never seen or heard of anything like this."
Beerus: "Universe 6! This is a Super Saiyan!"

Significance: Champa asks very plainly if Saiyans are able to transform, and Cabba responds with a "no". While he probably does have some way of powering up, he doesn't do so through transformation, unless he flat-out lied, I suppose.

I've been told that some translations went with "I've never seen a gold-haired Super Saiyan", which is, of course, wrong.

Minute: 17

Frost: "The reason I was hiding my true final form was not because I was saving it for later, like you assumed. It's difficult for me to control my power in my final form. For this reason, I once accidentally took the life of an evil-doer whom there was no need to kill. Ever since then, I have kept my final form sealed up, but... Goku-san, I get the feeling that you can handle even this form."

Significance: Like Freeza on Namek, Frost has difficulty controlling his full power.

Minute: 22
Context The next episode preview, after Goku's defeat.

Goku: "What happened?! I ain't got no idea what kind of technique [Frost] used!"

Significance: What happened at the end of Goku and Frost's match is anyone's guess. Not even Goku knows, though he believes that Frost did something to him. My money's on a case of food poisoning.
