I think one of the biggest mistakes from the get go when Funi replaced the Ocean cast was that the new actors all tried to sound exactly like the old ones. I understand why they thought they should, but in my experience having been an actress, when people do that, unless you're really gifted at imitation(like Corey Burton), which the majority of performers aren't, it always backfires. Simply because you're not a clone of the previous actor. As a matter of fact it's one of the basics you learn in theatre school. Yes watch previous performances of the part you're playing just to get some input or a better grasp of the character, but never then try and be an exact imitation. Make the role your own, while simultaneously nailing the character's nature and personality.
I've seen it with other anime too. The actress they brought in for Usagi in the Sailor Moon dub in season 3 tried to mimic the previous actress and she just ended up sounding like a bad caricature that you wanted to strangle by her odangos. >> Replacement actors and their directors need to concentrate on getting the acting and characterization part right and not worry about consistency of how the voice sounds. Trust me, kids won't be as upset as they think. Heck, I remember watching cartoons as a kid and when they changed an actor, I simply reacted with, "Oh hey it's a different voice. Oh this ep looks good!" So ya I simply went on my merry way with continuing to watch the series.
Also the fact that Funi cast the show by putting an ad in the local regular paper, wouldn't have helped attract the best talent either. :/ If that doesn't scream, "totally clueless, unprofessional, Mickey Mouse operation", I don't know what does. >>

Exactly, which is why I don't really consider any of them voice actors, Billy West is a voice actor, Maurice LaMarche is a voice actor, Chris Sabat is someone that was in the right place at the right time, where the standard work is held to is considerably less than throughout the rest of the industry.Jerseymilk wrote: Also the fact that Funi cast the show by putting an ad in the local regular paper, wouldn't have helped attract the best talent either. :/ If that doesn't scream, "totally clueless, unprofessional, Mickey Mouse operation", I don't know what does. >>

I was just about to say the same thing. If you had a good voice actor, and good direction, one guy playing half the cast isn't that bad.Captain Awesome wrote:Exactly, which is why I don't really consider any of them voice actors, Billy West is a voice actor, Maurice LaMarche is a voice actor, Chris Sabat is someone that was in the right place at the right time, where the standard work is held to is considerably less than throughout the rest of the industry.Jerseymilk wrote:Also the fact that Funi cast the show by putting an ad in the local regular paper, wouldn't have helped attract the best talent either. :/ If that doesn't scream, "totally clueless, unprofessional, Mickey Mouse operation", I don't know what does. >>

Frank Welker played 7 out of the original 10 Decepticons.
(Soundwave, Skywarp, Ravage, Laserbeak, Rumble, Frenzy, and Megatron)
Kunzait_83: Didn't say Nozawa's ACTING as Bardock was bad, technically it was very good. But the VOICE just doesn't fit, rather like--believe it or not--Linda Young's Freeza. As she's gotten used to the character, she's done some technical very good performances, but the voice just--doesn't--work (compare to when she uses the same voice as Genkai in YYH and it's perfect).
And I'm not disagreeing about Funi's massacre of the Bardock special, but that doesn't reduce Strait's individual performance.
It's Perfect Cell for Wakamoto, BTW. I haven't seen any of the pre-Cell Game episodes of the Cell Saga in the Japanese, and if Wakamoto sounds like he did in BT3, I almost don't want to.
But honestly, Wakamoto's Perfect Cell sounded like...like...a Japanese Looten Plunder.

Trunks & Goten forever
Hmm, while I would say that since that's your opinion and since this is an opinion thread, I wouldn't say that Nozawa's Bardock was anywhere near Linda Young's Freeza for the fact that Young's Freeza just comes off sounding way too different from the character that needed to be portrayed while Nozawa still portrayed the character in a way that did justice. Also, in the original when he's being held down by a lot of Freeza's men when he screams,Thanos6 wrote:Kunzait_83: Didn't say Nozawa's ACTING as Bardock was bad, technically it was very good. "FREEZA!! SHOW YOURSELF!!!! I WON'T LET YOU GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!!"
That was probably the best performance Nozawa has had with any character I've heard from her and I'm actually more comfortable with her as Bardock and Tullece than Goku, Gohan and Goten in all honesty.
Strait's performance would've been a lot better in my view, if they just left the, "He's a fucking bastard" in the dub. Too many times Bardock too nice to Goku in the dub when in the sub he just didn't give a shit. Then again there are a lot of times when people are too nice in the dub when the sub has people being bastards, :I'm looking at you Movie 9 dub:

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Compared to the french dub, the English is OKey. I mean, if anybody has headr of the french dub, they'd know what I'm talking about. The Freeza saga was the worst era for the new English dub, because not only the voice of Freeza, but because the rest sounded really weak, bruce falconer for that speciific saga made it sound a lot less siriou, and piccolo's "yes" spech. DBZ Digitally REMASTERED Season 3 is the only DVDBox i watched in english because they did not change a single line. Even the new Brolly Blue-ray movie they changed ome lines that were unnecerary, but Season Three, not ONE thing.

I honestly thought that DBZ - "The ultimate Uncut Special Edition" was the best age for the Eglish Era. The strong dub, the sireas music, the qulaity, and the 5.1 + extras of the DVDs. I was really upset when they cancelled the realese. I was really lloking foward to the namek saga.Picolo Said YES! YES ICAN DO IT! YES! YES! IFEEL IN-CRED-IBAL! I.. CAN DO THIS... I CAN WIN! YEAHHHHHH! (After that, I had to watchthe Jaoanese version.

I'm not going to even attempt to bold-red clean up that last post. It is absolutely unacceptable, and when combined with your recent attitude, is very close to crossing the line of continued posting allowance.

I wasn't referring to dialogue I was referring to Bardocks attitude toward everybody else in the dub as opposed to the sub. In regards to Goku and Bardock's relationship, it seemed like the dub wanted to come off as he the only reason he couldn't see and be with Goku was because he didn't have the time rather than, fucking hating his kid for being so weak. Bardock's response to Seipha/Fasha after she asked him to see Goku says it all.VegettoEX wrote:What, pray tell, version of this TV special are you watching...?Vekurotto wrote:Strait's performance would've been a lot better in my view, if they just left the, "He's a fucking bastard" in the dub.
Dub: Visit him huh? How nice, father/son bonding. Why should I? They'll just send him away?
Sub: To see the lowest class warrior without any promise at all? What kind of fool would make that trip?
Right off the bat the dub made it seem like Bardock was one of those "busy fathers" and if he had time he'd see Goku but he can't whereas sub, establishes he doesn't even care about Goku's existence. And both qualities are revisited in both versions.
Then there was the "message" to Goku where Bardock says in the sub to carry out his will and avenge the Saiyans gets changed to how he wishes he could've held him and been with him.

I do think Strait did a good job but I just didn't feel the same way as I did with Nozawa since, the lines, oh the lines changed every quality about him.

The Saiyans aren't man eaters, but they don't like weaklings, and they aren't exactly friendly people either. That's why he was allowed to live and sent to Earth in the first place. They thought, "Well he's weak and doesn't deserve to be with us, but on Earth he'll be the strongest one there and fetch us a nice prize for Freeza-sama when he get older and remembers his mission."Rocketman wrote:I think Goku's very survival disputes that. EDIT: Oh and, the Saiyans weren't in charge of who lived and died, that was Freeza's men.

Not so much directly kill him, but place him on a mountain to die (or survive) IIRC. Somewhat similar to how the Saiyans sent Goku away to a weak planet; if they weren't in planet trade, it is possible that he would have faced the same fate as a weak spartan child.Rocketman wrote:I think Goku's very survival disputes that.
