More Toriyama rough sketches

So Hujio sent me an extra copy of Akira Toriyama--The World that he had sitting around, and I noticed that on pp.91-92 it has a few rough sketches of DragonBall characters, similiar to the ones showcased in Daizenshuu 4. So I made Hujio scan them so we could share them with the world.

This bunch is my favorite. Look at that fat Freeza! He looks quite similiar to Dodoria. It makes me wonder if Toriyama came up with Dodoria from this discarded design for Freeza. Or maybe he had already thought up Dodoria, and he rejected this design for Freeza precisely because they look so similiar? Hmmm...

Awww...don't you just love little Piccolo?

That's the first thing I noticed, too.

Neat stuff Herms. Little Piccolo is awesome.

Toriyama draws them so round when they're that small.

I love stuff like this! Behind the scenes artwork's always interested me. (I wish there existed some preliminary drawings for Vegeta's design).

The dodoria!Freeza is interesting, but I'm glad he wasn't used as he doesn't seem very intimidating. ^^;
(In addition to Dodoria, he actually makes me think of Abo and Cado. )

That toddler or child Piccolo is SO cute. X3

Dang, what it that in Goku's hand? A club?! Anyway, thanks for posting these; are there any more in this book, or any of the other Toriyama artbooks?

Since this is a Toryiama artbook, there are rough sketches of characters from a bunch of his other series. I just scanned the DragonBall related ones. I'm not sure if there are any other sketches in some of his other artbooks, I'd have to look. Anyway...

I love seeing early designs and concepts for well known characters... especially crazy ones like Freeza here.

That Chibi Piccolo design would've been soooo good if Toriyama used it for the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai... Everyone would understimate the little guy, and the ability to make him giant would be even better... plus it would make sense as he was 3 years old compared to Dende.

Nah, I think the Piccolo/Goku was perfect the way it was. My favourite fight of the series.

Aha, Bussani, that's great! I considered looking for a picture, but I thought it would take too long to find a picture that fits as well as the one you posted.

I don't think it could have had the sense of equality in terms of power that the battle had, if he was much smaller.

Yes there are! These are from "Akira Toriyama - The World Special", which is a different artbook than "Akira Toriyama - The World", where the other sketches Herms posted are from. I hope these aren't too big for some people.
