Episode #0186! VegettoEX and Meri finally get around to reviewing "DragonBall Evolution" for the PSP. Is this game truly as horrific as you have been led to believe, or are there possibly some redeemding qualities? Home release news from around the world, more "Kai" voice replacements, August's tons of releases, and your great e-mails round out the episode! Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the interesting *one-hundred-eighty-six* episodes, now.

Sorry it's a day late. Well... I'm not entirely sorry. We had a nice, long, relaxing weekend :D. I wasn't even planning on putting this up tonight, but I'm working from home tomorrow... don't need to sleep just yet... ended up doing all the work on the show and site to get it online...

Don't even need to listen to the podcast to answer that: yes, it's awful. :?

I was under the impression it ran on the Budokai engine. Surely it can't be that bad. From a gameplay standpoint I mean.

I remember seeing an MST3K'd video of the first 10 minutes of story mode for this game back when it was first coming out; the "sock puppet" thing is dead on. And (intentionally? unintentionally?) hilarious.

Oh, and I do recall that in this game, someone on the board was able to identify Chatku as being voiced by Yuri Lowenthal. There is no credit to him of this on his ANN page, and I don't blame him at all, all thing considered. @_@

(I still don't feel we're in the clear live-action-wise for sure until fall when we find out the supposed sequel's fate.)
On hiatus.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Lowenthal. Can't tell who anyone else is, though. And I doubt the recording was union, either...

Mike, I think Satou Satomi (Cargo) might have a problem with you giving her the shaft on both the main site and the podcast. I should have told you earlier after I read your update on the main site, but I was saving it for my own update... which I never got around to doing.

Too bad I can't listen to the podcast. Would be cool, though.

Good episode. I actually bought the DBE PSP game when it came out. I think Mike did a good review of the game, but one thing I'd like to go a bit more into is the concept art. It was cool to see storyboards, especially for the Goku vs Piccolo fight. Apparently, the original idea was for a more faithful, PG-13 end to the battle. Also, did anyone else think the concept designs for the characters were awful? They made me appreciate what I got in the movie. Goku should not look like some badass martial artist with a sword.

Is the Funi Rep thing still going to happen? No offense to VegettoEX, but my anticipation for that episode is making the content of any others before it seem fairly easy to forget in comparison.

This was an okay episode. I'm not sure I agree with the idea that "Hardcore" doesn't mean "Japanese-version fans" in the context provided. Granted, there's plenty in the set for die-hard dub fans as well, considering that wanting excellent video quality is not the monopoly of the Japanese version fanbase, but within the context of a set that mirrors Japanese packaging while using Japanese as the default language track and was meant to be known by fans who follow Japanese DVD releases, it's hard to say that "Hardcore" does not translate to at least "A fan who knows about and heavily follows the Japanese version of the show and the domestic releases within its country of origin."

It isn't something to take personally, and I don't mean anything as an insult to anybody by any means. It's just that the marketing and features seem very heavily slanted towards Japanese version fans.

It's fine for dub fans though, I think. As all fans of the Japanese version who've bought a Funi DVD know, it's not the end of the world to buy a product that is not exactly MARKETED toward you, even though it has features you want. You can hope that your preferred BGM track(s) makes it into the menu.

I'm not quite sure why/how people don't understand that this isn't really up to me. I asked. They said yes. They said they'll let me know when. They're still in contact. They aren't ready to be thrown under the bus just yet.

Not trying to be rude in my response, but sheesh, y'all! Lay off me with all the posts and e-mails about it, please! ^^

And this is why it's important, folks, to actually read the Japanese text on a website beyond just skimming it to see... "yep, I see 'Dende' and 'Cargo' listed, so ANN was right."

Personally if you're primarily a dub watcher, I can't see how you can fall into the "Hardcore Fan" category. Simply because what you're watching isn't how the anime was intended to be viewed.

The culmination of changes in script, musical scores, certain VA deliveries and context intent make the Funi dub not really DB/Z but a different show altogether.

I mean say hyperthetically they made a 40th Anniversary Edition Star Wars release.

On this release they replaced John Williams score with "modern" synthesised beats, replaced James Earl Jones' Darth Vader with Joan Rivers voice and almost completely revised the script.

Would this really be a Star Wars film to you? Ofcourse not.

Would you want to be bunched in with the audience who prefer this revision? Hell No!!!

Yet this is what Funi essentially did to Dragonball Z, and this is what the majority of English speaking audiences flock to.

I prefer not to be placed in the same category as these "Casual Fans". These fans should know that the term "Hardcore Fan" is a term they have no claim to.

My opinion anyway.

Shouldn't the opposite of "hardcore fan" be "softcore fan"?

Yeah but then it's awkard when someone approaches in the middle of a conversation about your fandom status.

Jake: I'm more of a hardcore person myself

Jake's Friend: I'm more leaning towards softcore personally

Weird Old Lady: You dirty little bastards and your porn movies!!!

I've always preferred "easycore", myself.

Where does the manga fit in to the whole "hardcore" fan thing? For some reason it's nearly always the anime that's involved in topics like this.

That's because manga fans have more sense.
