Beckett Dragon Ball Z 2002

Post by desirecampbell » Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:08 am

So I stumbled across this the other day -

Image

I giggled, but was unsure about picking it up. Did I really want this in my house? So, I decided to flip through, see if there was anything worth keeping. And then, first page, bam!

Image

Greg Werner you say? I wonder what great things he has to tell us?

Power Levels. Nothing we haven't seen before. Yes he says 12,000,000 and 15,000,000 - but we can't hold that against him now. Seeing Greg say "there's no disputing these power levels" does make me giggle, though.

What is GT? Again, nothing we don't know already. It's mostly episode airdates and figure releases. And a seemingly random list of GT character names. Seriously, is there any rhyme or reason to the order here?

Image

Movies 4 and 5 reviews. Kind of interesting to see what one of the most influential Dragon Ball fans thought of a couple movies ten years ago.

Image Image

The problem with Greg is that even in a magazine with the quality of Beckett he still doesn't look foolish. Most of the information he gives is just that - good factual information. And there's nothing funny there.

But this is Beckett my friends, don't lose hope yet!

Other great stuff from this issue: All the character descriptions. This article is just a bunch of terrible drawings of characters and ridiculous descriptions.

Are you bad enough... at photoshop?

And this little gem of fan art.

I... I don't even know what to say.

I owned that very issue back in the sixth grade.

To be fair, "Vegeta kills him" more or less sums up #19. On the other hand, even Rocketman would probably admit there's a bit more to Tenshinhan than "the second tallest Z soldier."

Ah well, I always bought them too. Even though my English was still very poor at the time. XD

Pretty funny to see these again now. I actually have every Beckett Dragon Ball Z Quarterly stuffed in a cabinet somewhere in my house, or at least I did last time I checked. When I'm home for the summer, maybe I'll give them all a once over and see if there's anything else worth scanning.

Oh, and I literally chuckled at the fact that it took six different people to write that "Action Figure Theatre."

I used to buy this magazine every month at the comic book store. Oh, the memories. Those horrible, horrible memories. The only thing I could remember about this magazine were those awkwardly drawn covers and pin-ups poster.

But seriously, that is amazing. I still have a Beckett poster hanging in my room with a picture of SS(J)4 Goku...although the poster has the caption "Dragon Ball Z". I freaking love these. The nostalgia factor is through the roof.

The only copy of Beckett I own I think I bought only because it had this shiny "animated" Goku and Vegeta on the cover. You know like those stickers that if you'd move them around slightly it'd look like the image is morphing into something else?

It has an "interview" with both characters inside it and I'm vaguely curious to go look and see how it held up.

Oh man. Big Momma's right, nostalgia through the roof. I really frickin wish my parents never got rid of these. Strangely enough, I still have all my old Beckett Pokemon and Digimon mags though. Quick check on google/eBay... and wow, Beckett DB mags aren't easy to find (at a reasonable price). The most I would pay for an issue is $5, but I honestly would buy a ton of these

Recoome, Roshi and Mr.Satan got the worst of it as far as bad art goes.

Tien; The second tallest Z soldier
This is easily the most distinctive thing about Tenshinhan. When I first saw Tenshinhan, I was like "Fuck! That guy is, like, second tallest or something!"
Yamcha; Goku's friend who owns a cat
(un)True story: As Yamucha makes no money and the hideout is Pu'reh's, technically the cat owns him.
Yamucha Densetsu - APRIL 8th Update - Goku is Yamucha and Yamucha is Goku
Further evidence to support the Yamucha-Goten lineage! Features badly Photoshopped images from Google search

Also, that Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta is totally some kid's fan art, and that's hilarious.

I always thought Beckett was a fun magazine. I own every issue or close to the entire run. A blast to look back at the early days of DragonBall.

What on earth would possess a person to buy this? I had this exact issue given to me back in the day, I think I just threw it out.
