Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

How do you think the series would have played out differently if at all?
Would Bardock be just as evil as Raditz? Or would he be all nice and compassionate towards his
son he never really knew
This question has been in my mind for a while now.

I don't think Bardock was really all that much like Raditz to begin with, but I'm sure he'd treat Goku better than the brother did. Going off the TV Special, he had visions of his son's new life on Earth, and by the final one, it was obvious that he developed a bit of a soft spot for him when you compared it to the way he viewed him as nothing but low-class garbage before going off to Meat.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

It started off logical enough for a universe where Bardock didn't get his visions or killed, but then it took such a bad fanfic turn... gah. They need better writers.
I'm available, as are countless other fans who are better than most these what-if scenarios seem to imply...

The third TV Animation daizenshuu mentions that the original plan for the Bardock TV special was for Goku to fight his father. Fortunately, wiser heads prevailed and we ended up with something much more interesting.

Hmm, really? Would have been interesting to see how they handled it I guess, but I do agree with you completely. What we got is so much better than anything I imagine they could have come up with to explain that.

Bardock might have a great chance of reforming since like others have said, he had a vision of Goku's new life on Earth and seemingly would respect that since Goku was standing up for what was right (which was kicking Frieza's butt).

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I'm just about done with the concept of reboots and making shows that were products of their time and impactful "new and sexy" and in line with modern tastes and sensibilities. Let stuff stay in their era and give today's kids their own shit to watch.
I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about
your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

After fighting for his own planet and it's freedom, I think Bardock would've respect Gokuh's wish for his own planet's safety. I think Bardock would've ultimately joined the cast of Dragon Ball in the fight against Freeza. Because of this, out of all the Saiyans I feel Bardock (as DBZAOTA482 just said) would've been able to reform the quickest.
That would actually be a rather interesting take on the Namek arc, actually.

I think that Bardock, unwilling to interfere with the future, would just spy on Gokuu without actually meeting him. He might come into contact with him eventually, perhaps instinctively attempting to save his life in danger against Vegeta and/or Freeza but forgetting about the repercussions (like Marty when he saved his father from being knocked down by his grandfather’s car). And in that case, he’d be somewhat compassionate and maybe help Gokuu against Vegeta and/or Freeza. That’d be cool to see. Maybe Bardock sacrificing his life to save Gokuu, leading to Gokuu’s transformation into a Super Saiyan.

I wonder what a conversation between him and Trunks would be like.
