Any airtime left...? (DB Airing in Canada)

Post by Mattias » Thu Nov 24, 2005 4:27 pm

Just a general question to anyone and everyone. It seems that up here in Canada, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are nowhere to be seen on TV. I believe that GT is still airing Friday nights, but I'm not so sure. I could check the schedule that's up at YTV.com, but I'm too lazy.

I'm just curious, is this lack of airtime happening anywhere else, right now?

I haven't seen a Dragon Ball Z episode on TV for over a year now.

If this is the case elsewhere, could this mean that there are simply other programs simply demanding more airtime, or that Dragon Ball has lost its worth on the tube? Perhaps both?

CN moved Dragonball Z from weekday nights about a month ago and replaced it with Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Now it's been airing on Saturday nights in Toonami. But lately, Toonami's been playing movies and other crap and DBZ hasn't been on. I guess that it's just that DBZ's popularity is sort of dropping. I say that CN and YTV should start showing DB from the beginning and go all the way through the final episode of GT.

I mean Toonami could show two DBZ episodes a week, but they leave that shitty Yu-Gi-Oh wannabe, Duel Masters, on the air. Don't they realize that no one wants to watch that shit? I think Toonami and CN are switching emphasis to Naruto and making it what DBZ once was on Toonami.
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

I just checked YTV.com and apparently they arn't showing DBZ or DB anymore. I was sure DB was on every friday, though. They've got a ton of other anime I've never heard of: like "Battle B*Daman" (be 'da man, maybe?), "Zatch Bell", "D.I.C.E.", "Mew Mew Power". Plus two Yugioh, Pokemon, and Gindam shows - each!
How can they NOT show DBZ?

Battle B*Daman- Beyblade ripoff(not that Beyblade isn't crap too), and it's pronounced "Bee-Dah-mon"
Zatch Bell- actually quite an interesting concept and show. I believe the manga is also available through Viz
D.I.C.E.- childish Gundam rip-off
Mew Mew Power is really Tokyo Mew Mew, a magically girl/sentai show that die hard fans are pretty upset over it's American version.
The second Yugi-Oh is a spin-off series, not even involving the same characters. And I think Pokemomn will forever remain on tv....

I suppose it's like others have said. DB, especially Z has been aired so many times and it's popularity is waning. Plus with Yugi-Oh and Pokemon there are still new episodes to air here. With Gundam, it's always new series. DB just doesn't have anything new left except for the remaining movies.

I haven't seen any DBZ on Toonami here in the UK. I think they've stopped showing it.

Hey! I live in Hamilton too.
Yeah, I THINK right now, they only show DragonBall GT on Friday night.
Up until a while ago, they were still showing DragonBall as well, early weekday mornings. They may still have it on, but if it is, it's REALLY early in the morning.

Why are they doing this? Well, all three series have already completed its run and then some on YTV some time ago, so they're probably just cutting it out to make room for new shows.

I'm kind of pissed at them taking off DragonBall - it was the second anime I'd ever seen (after AstroBoy), hell, I didn't even know what anime was at that point. I watched the whole first season and then they stopped showing it. When they first aired DBZ I was like, "hey, that huy looks familiar." It took six or seven episodes before I made the connection.

Original DB and DBZ are currently being featured on "On-Demand" digital cable, though they're edit-dub only, the dub original DB episodes alone are worth checking them out. I absolutely loved "Boss Rabbit". Regarding being on an actual station for daily/weekly airings, I wish Toonami would bring it back all the way from the start of original DragonBall and run it all the way to the end of GT, and considering they have DBZ movies (Ocean version) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and the first 2 TV specials purchased, they could run those if they wanted as well. I'd love to watch all of original DragonBall on toonami once more, despite having the entire series on DVD (save for the first 13 episodes), something's just exhilarating watching it on television.

I live in the UK and quite a while ago Toonami broadcast a few of the Dragon Ball movies, then suddenly stopped showing Dragon Ball/Z/GT all together! It's such ashame, although the episodes were the horrible "Blue Waters" (or Ocean Waters?) version. Now all Toonami has are some childish, poorly animated programmes of strange robots and stuff....

I think DBZ is gonna see something of a resting period now that the series has been shown in its entirety, though I imagine movies 7-13 will find airtimes eventually. Then when we least expect it, I wouldn't be surprised if it returned to a daily timeslot out of the blue to shock the hell out of us.

Or maybe it's migrating to that FUNimation channel that's nearing launch. Is DBZ still on the International Channel?

I think DragonBall was my second anime too. It was over a decade ago, I think. Or around a decade. They showed those first set of Pilaf episodes on TV, but that's as far as they went.

As it was mine. Well, third. I also remember watching Astro Boy, but I sure as hell don't remember anything about it except for the cool running animation during the end credits.

My second anime? Sailor Moon. Yes, stab me now.

I haven't seen much of Dragon Ball GT, and I don't think I'll ever get the desire to actually sit down and watch all of it. The character designs look horribly off (they seem to be much shorter than before), not to mention that the music is absolutely terrible (I'm talking about the original version, here).

Dragon Ball Z I can understand having it taken off the airlines, since it used to air every single day on YTV. Immense syndication eventually leads to immense fatigue. Not to mention ridiculous filler and shoddy animation to make the series go on longer than it should have. Regardless, I still have not seen all of Dragon Ball, and really need to get my hands on the last portion of it (when Goku took on Piccolo during the Tenkaichi Budokai). It had some really killer animation sequences.

Sailor Moon owns and you know it.

Dragon Ball was one of my first anime. I used to watch it and Sailor Moon in Fox Kids, though oddly, all I can really remember from DB is when they were in that trailer in the Yamcha arc (*shrug*), and I oddly clearly remember the Evil Endymion arc from Sailor Moon. My memory is odd in that time of life.

For some reason, I hated DBZ when it aired on Cartoon Network. Then I... actually watched it and it became a guilty pleasure. Now I'm bugging friends to watch it.

Dude, you really haven't seen much of GT, have you. GT's music was awesome, and while the series had obvious flaws, it had truly beyond belief moments of it. The Blackstar Dragonball hunt through the galaxy provided the viewer with a new grand (no pun intended) outlook on the DragonBall universe that had never been seen in the series before (with the major exceptions of the Namek arc and final Kid Buu battle). The battle against Bebi was pretty damn awesome once Goku had his tail regrown, Piccolo's death scene was truly impressive and hit me hard when he said his goodbyes to Gohan, the Super 17 saga gave us a nifty look on most of the villans from all three DragonBall series's returning from the dead, not to mention the final 4 episodes of the series were truly phenominal. One final thing about GT, the Goku Jr. TV special was an awesome prequal to the final 8 minutes of the series, and was done in STEREO.

Sorry for the rambling, just thought I should get that off my chest as I honestly did enjoy the GT series very much. Like lost-in-thought once said, it's all personal preference when it comes to DragonBall. GT's just always getting a bad rap because all Toriyama had to do with it were some character designs for the first half of the series, it frankly pisses me off, and by the way, listen to the music in the final episode when Goku absorbs the Dragonballs, I dare you not to get choked up at that.

Oh, come on Mattias. GT is pretty good. It's a fun show to watch. Don't let the different look of the show and some different music sway you from watching the show. Plus, it's only 64 episodes. Not too long and not too short.

No, GT got a bad wrap because it rehashed plots:

1) The premise is a poor rehash of the fact that Kami+Piccolo were once fused.

2) The Blackstar Hunt wasn't something we were never introduced to, it was a rehash of the early DB saga: Gill your Oolong/Puar character, Pan your girl/Yamcha character, Trunks your teenage male/Bulma character, and Goku was turned into a kid so he resume his kid Goku role.

3) Bebi was a rehash of the early Saiyan and Android sagas, with the day being saved by a rehash of 2 Z sagas: the introduction of a Saiyan Transformation.

4) Super 17 was a rehash of Imperfect Cell and the late Planet M2 arcs, as well as movie 12: Myuu wants revenge on Goku+co, a creation of Dr Gero needs to merge somehow with #17, and the dead villains ever faced by the Z-crew are attacking Earth.

5) I've yet to see all of the last arc, but it already contains a rehash of the Buu saga: Evil Buu was a Buu who got stronger by absorbing another Buu, while the last dragon's power derived from a Dragonball, so he got stronger by absorbing the other Dragonballs. It also rehashed the end of the Cell Games: Goku sacrifices himself.

6) The GT special was indeed something we never saw before in anything DB: a complete lack of martial arts. It did however, rehash Goku's illness theme through Pan, and brought back SSJ as the only means of saving the day.

That's not to say I hated GT, I just didn't find it anywhere near as interesting as the rest of Dragonball.

Yes, DB and DBZ has had their collective run on television, and while I think they deserve to be aired at least once a week because of the wonderful ratings they once bequeathed unto Cartoon Network, the DVD releases might make executives think reruns are unnecessary.

Cartoon Network does seem to be pushing Naruto as the new Dragonball Z, but... well... it just isn't Dragonball Z. Very few of the Dragonball fans I know care for it and the otaku who despise Dragonball Z somehow relentlessly loathe Naruto even more, which I didn't think was feasible (and these folks have quite excellent taste, prefering instead recycled half-assed junk with feathers and robots and idiot teenage girls... uh, I mean... certain other animes). I caught Naruto once and didn't like it, having spotted an episode that was entirely mundane filler. I like the manga, but I just don't feel like this series warrants my waiting through all that pointless added-in crap. And the voices killed me. Killed me dead. I can tolerate some bad voice acting, but something about this show...

I've always found GT's quality questionable in spite of all the arguments I have heard, but if a network were to air Dragonball and Dragonball Z, they might as well finish the entire series.

XD;; I think what Maitoferreti meant is she's a fan of DB AND Naruto. To fandom, it seems like you can't be a fan of both, but she and I (...) pull it off.
