GT Time and Bra and Pan

Post by Chaos Saiyajin » Mon Dec 05, 2005 6:31 pm

I have a question that's been bothering me for awhile now. How many years passed between Dragonball Z and GT? I've always accepted a ten-year period, but lately I've been reading five years was the time period between Z and GT.

Also, I've got a question about the ages of Pan and Bra. I've always thought that the two were both 4 at the end of Z and 14 in GT. I've also heard that Bra is older by a few years. Is this right? Or are Bra and Pan the same age?
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

The Daizenshuu and GT Perfect File state it's a five year difference. According to Daizenshuu, Pan is a year older than Bra, making her 10 years old in GT, and Bra's 9. The 10 year time different for Z and GT is fan speculation only.

I always thought teenaged characters looked like kids in DB, and kids looked tiny. So Pan must be in her teens, Bra must be about nineteen or twenty, the same goes with other characters such as Goten, who must be 24 by the time of GT (I'm not accurate with ages).

... Bra looks old for her age, but nowhere near 20-ish. ._.;;;;;;; Actually, Goten is about 22, so that much is right. (He was born in 767, GT started in 789)

And rightfully so: Pan looks like she's in her early teens and Bra looks 16-19ish. I can see why Toriyama draw Pan as he did, since being told she's 10 isn't far-fetched for me, but Bra looks much more mature than her.

This is the first (and main) plot hole of GT that pushes it out of continuity for me. The show is set 5 years after Z, Pan is 9 and Bra is 10 (GT made bra older instead of younger, as she was in Z).

The back of FUNi's first Lost-Episodes DVD states it's been 10 years, I take that statment over the Daizenshuu's, as the Daizenshuus have evidently had other quirks in their armor besides GT things. So yeah, I take that as more official (from my point of view).
14 years later

The Daizenshuu don't say jack about GT. The GT Perfect files do. And they, just like the series, were created by Toei. Even if you DO say it's been 10 years, that STILL doesn't work. Goten, Trunks, and Uub are far too young, as is Pan, for it to have been 10 years.

Actually, it's possible for Bra to be one year older than Pan. The daizenshuu's chronology may say she was born in 780 while Pan was born in 779, but Bra's bio states 778.

Either way, though, still not the teenager shown in GT. :?

The plot hole that did it for me was the beginning of the series: DBs from before Kami defused from Piccolo still around? I think not. It kills the purpose of the Namek saga even if it could work.

Well, no, it kills Goku needing to go to New Namek to get Dende so they'd all have DBs. Once Kami and Piccolo fused in the Android Saga the Black Star DBs would have been restored. Thing is... I'm sure that if Pilaf can learn of and find them that SOMEONE else would have noticed them prior to GT and hidden them deep in the Lookout or something....

Pilaf being alive can be considered a plothole, Uub looking like he's no older than 15 (if the show is, in fact 10 years later) is one, Pan and Bra's ages/appearances, Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu having bodies in Hell, Cooler and 19 being in Hell, and those are just off the top of my head (I've not even seen all the series).

I take the back of an American DVD case saying it's been 10 years with a grain of salt. Toriyama atleast has SOME say in the Daizenshuu and Perfect Files. American DVDs is some bored guy at FUNi.

(And I'm sure I'm gonna get proven wrong in many ways.)

The people that made GT (Toei and such and FUNImation)
changed the date twice to three times.
Toei, added 5 Years Goten:22 Trunks:23 Bulla:10 Pan:9/10
FUNImation,added 10 Years Goten:27 Trunks:28 Pan:13/14 Bulla:14/15
Another company also changed the date.
For America 10 years passed.

You don't need to push enter after every sentance. :?

This is what I've gotten so far:
Toei
Pan-9/10
Bra-10/11
FUNi
Pan-14/15
Bra-15/16

I really don't think that Pan and Bra are teenagers. I mean, if you look back at Toriyama's designs for Bulma at 16 and Chi-Chi at 19, they look...well...like teenagers. :? Since Toriyama did character designs for GT, I assume he drew them as Toei asked: as ten/eleven year-olds. If Toriyama-sensei had drawn them as teenagers, I think Bra would look more like Bulma when she was 16, and Pan would look a lot more like Videl at that age.

Exactly. Bra might look like she's older than 9 or 10, but it might just be the way she dresses. Trunks doesn't look near-thirty.

But then again...

If Goku's 12, and Pan's taller... maybe she is 15. :?

I have two younger siblings, and my youngest is taller than the middle. I wouldn't go by height in that respect.

But of course, Goku stayed the same height until the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai in DB. Pan could've just inherited height from Videl's side of the family...Or Gohan's...Gyu Mao is pretty damn tall. :P

I'm ashamed to concur - damn you little sister!

Anyway - I just wanted to bring up any proff for either side of the argument.

-Pan and Bra are dissimilar to other teenaged Toriyama characters.
-Pan is taller than Goku, but that alone can't prove she's older.
-Trunks and Goten sure arn't near-thirty.

Now that it's all out - I think we can safely say GT is 5 years after Z.

Unless there's something I've missed.

It's more noticable in the manga, but Goku and Krillin did gain a few inches between the Baba saga and the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai. Not that much, but enough where you notice.

Would Vegeta's statements about Saiya-jin's aging slower possibly pose a problem? Just thinking this could explain why Goku is short and why Goten and Trunks could be coming to 30.

Actually that DOES pose another problem with the Pan/Bra thing: Bra is only half-saiyan, not 1/4th-Saiyan like Pan, so she should appear even younger than Pan does.

EDIT: Woopsy! Fixed!
