Grammar Warning

Post by VegettoEX » Wed Jan 11, 2006 10:25 pm

Heyas, everyone:

Especially since the podcast began, we've been getting more and more newcomers to the board. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this, and I'm ever-so-excited to see so many people flocking to the board. I love having a place that intelligent fans can get together and discuss something they share such a huge love for.

At the same time, there's been more and more of these newcomers that simply aren't reading the rules for the forum.

Please note that you are expected to type properly, and in English. If you do not agree to these rules, you are more than welcome to simply not post here.

And we're going to enforce these rules, and harder than ever before.

It's a necessary evil in order to maintain the atmosphere the board has had since its inception. There's going to be more posts that say "Please type properly; you agree to... (blah blah blah)."

At this point in time, I am *not* interested in taking on any additional moderators. If and when I choose to do so, it will be at my own discretion, and will not be made public when and to whom this decision applies.

(In a nutshell, don't ask me to be a moderator. It's not that the decision doesn't affect you, it's just that I don't need anyone to ask me if they can be a moderator :P)

At the same time, if you happen to see someone with 1 or 2 posts that's not typing properly, don't be afraid to remind them of the rules in my absence. It's perfectly OK. Just don't EVERYONE get on their case, and don't try and act like an administrator ^_~.

If you choose to see these decisions as us being all "high-and-mighty", so be it; we can accept that just well. We've been around for nearly a decade and don't need to prove anything to anyone. Daizenshuu EX (and its various outlets, including the chat and forum) is a place for fans to gather and discuss in an environment that can be easily read, easily understood, and fun to be in.

Again, you agree to follow these rules when you sign up and post. If you do not agree with these rules, I will be more than happy to close down your account at your request.

Thanks, everyone! Continue with the fun!

Forum rules are generally the same everywhere. I think that's why people don't even read them anymore... It's hard to blame them. Our rules are just unique (yet excellent). it's not only a grammar problem, but also signature images, oversized avatars... et cetera.

I can't help but feel that a better solution exists (than correcting every newbie) that would lead to less trouble in the long run. Slapping the rules onto the phbBB code itself might help. Maybe some of these people are getting links to the forum itself... they'd never see the rules. Wouldn't that explain the occasional "There's a site, too?" responses?

My personal advice to the newbies is to lurk first before posting. Just for a short time. Sure, we want more contributors... but if they watch long enough, the rules will come naturally to them. It's pretty noticeable when everybody else in the discussion is using flawless grammar. For that, we should make sure to set a good example.

Another situation where some lurking would help... I know I wouldn't write everything in small sized pink italics if everybody else stuck to the standard black. It doesn't necessarily make you a conformist... it's more like deciding not to wear pants on your walk to the park. We'll jail you.

I've seen a lot of MP3 sites that have a password or a certain way to get to their downloads page that incorporates reading the rules. An example of it is making a certain word in the rules somewhere a link. Basically with these methods, if you want the link to the page, it forces you to read through them. Perhaps something along those lines might work for the sign-up page?
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I don't want to really *hide* the forum, either. It's an extremely important and fun part of the site, and I wouldn't want to have incredibly fantastic people pass it up because they didn't see a link to it right away.

It isn't necessarily about hiding the site. It just seems we're hiring more police officers to stop people who skipped drivers ed, so to speak.

I would like to raise the argument of ESL, (English as a Second Language,) countries. Some people may not be able to type in English as well as others, esspecially when dealing with people from such countries. It is perfectly resonable that it is not always the lack of intellegence that is behind poorly typed posts IMO.

All of this in due respect, of course.
Best. Slip 'n' slide. EVER!

I think a couple of really good improvements (just to weed out the easy questions and whatnot) would be things like put a link to daizex.com at the top of every page right under the banner (see here for an example). Just a simpl, easy, quick link back to the main site would mean there's no excuse not to check there before asking a question.

Other things like actually dissalowing pictures in signatures and limiting the signature text length. Or limiting the amount of formating in posts (either alltogether or for those of fewer posts). But the prolem there is the actual posters thinking that this looks good.

Another possibility, though I hope someone can think of a way of fine-tuning this, is to leave an announcement thread at the top of every board entitled "Re-emphasis of the Rules." It could simply be a copy+paste of the rules page.

We're always *extremely* forgiving to those from other countries. I was debating whether or not to even include it in this above post, but I decided it wasn't all that important. We're not out to be jackasses, and we totally understand that not all people in the world speak English. Hell, the show in question comes from a country where they speak Japanese :).

At the same time:

- Those from other countries that DON'T speak English tend to put more effort into their English in order to get it right, as opposed to those who DO speak English and just don't care... it's really funny...

- This is an English-speaking board, and we need to be able to administer and moderator in our own native tongue.

Hopefully that all makes sense.

Does that mean that there will be some people posting in Japanese, Spanish, German, etc.?
Even I became a loser when I made one of these...

There have been instances of posts in other languages. They are typically removed immediately. If we can't read your language, we can't administrate effectively, and thusly cannot allow it.

If it's someone using another language as PART of their general post that's already in English (such as citing another language's script, or a quote from the Japanese original, etc.), we obviously don't mind that :P.

Bumping to say...

Pay. Fucking. Attention.

I'm going to start banning left and right. Follow the rules on typing properly, or you're gone.

Eep. I know this is a bit late, but . . . are you talking about people who should know better, like current members, or is it the constant influx of new people you're referring to instead? Or is it a combination and we're all of us just getting on your nerves?

I know I'm typing properly, so I'm not particularly worried. But my point is that if you ever do have a particular issue with me that I hope you'll let me know, rather than let my offenses build up until they make you angry enough to make posts like this.

I more-or-less know how the ban system works . . . but that's always subject to change, isn't it? :D

I guess I am not sure exactly what your guidelines are for banning EX. I mean everyone goofs up a little bit here and there. Are you only going to ban those with posts like: gOOkUU issss SSSow KEEwll!!!! :?:

I don't know if this is there in the rules or not but just a slight suggestion. I know how you get angry when you don't see proper typing EX, but there are people who might make mistakes, unknowingly. I would like to suggest a warning first and then if they still continue, a ban is warranted. But, if this is how you are already working, then it's fine with me. :)
Just that you should realise that not everybody is used to typing like writing and not everybody has been to forums with these rules. To be honest, this is the first forum that I have been to that stresses on this grammar constraint. I issue my fullest support on this issue though :)

Also, one more suggestion. Wouldn't it be better if you made a warn list or something to give the members a reminder about the warnings and the grammar rule?

Just wanting to clarify again, if you are already doing these techniques, then it's all fine. :) Just trying to help. ^_^

People are warned first.

However, let me be upfront and say that if you're not willing to read the rules before you post, I'm not willing to put up with your bullshit.

Can you link me up to the penny arcade grammer image?

I have been trying to find it, and I know I saw it around here some where.
