"Selypa" -> "Fasha" in FUNimation Dub

Post by unstable_person99 » Fri Jan 20, 2006 8:03 pm

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but it's been bothering me for a while. Selypa, the female member of Bardock's team had her name changed to "Fasha" in the FUNi dub of the Bardock Special. What I want to know is why the f*ck they did that anyway! I mean there's nothing inappropriate or sinful about the character's name.

My guess is that the name was hard to pronounce with an American tongue. I, myself, have to think about it sometimes before using the name.

Is it really that surprising? Is it really worth cursing about? Furthermore, are you not upset about the rest of his team's name-changes?

Perspective, please.

I'd forgotten about the others also. I think Selypia is such an easily recognizable character (being the only female Saiya-jin we ever really see) that she's the first to be noticed if a name was changed.

I remember the musclar Saiya-jin being called "Tora" but I'd always thought that was the correct name. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure it means "tiger".

His name was "Toma" (Tomato).

Kind of ambiguous, as the tomato is a fruit. But, indeed, the reason for changing the names of Selypar, Toma, Totapo, and Pumbkin were changed to Fasha, Tora, Borgos, and Shugesh (respectively), is totally beyond me. The FUNimation names are obviously not vegetable pun-related, nor do they seem to have any pun attached to them at all. They merely seem to be names pulled out of their collective posterior.

The Pumpkin name does sound kind of corny in English though.

Tomato's are vegetables. XP

But ya, the name changes are wierd as hell. Seripa, Toma, Toteppo, and Panbukin aren't that odd, hard to pronounce, or sound like anything that could be mis-understood as a bad word. At least they didn't change Bardock's name...

It's actually "Panbukin".

Sounding it out, yeah. But it's literal spelling is Pumbkin. Panbukin doesn't exactly show the pun off the word Pumpkin, whereas Pumbkin has an upside-down P. XP

This is nothing really new. FUNimation simply wanted to play out the whole alien stuff and seemed to like changing things into alien sounding names just for the sake of it.

I agree. In fact, I think the changed names are weirder and harder to pronounce than the original ones. I'm not saying they're hard, but hardER/more awkward..

Whenever I hear the name Fasha, I can't help but think of Austin Powers, where Goldmember kept talking about about "Austin's Fasha." (His Ferger? What's a Ferger?)

I'm not sure I want Dragonball to be reminding me of Austin Powers. :P

Now you're sounding like those guys who were comparing Mini-Moon to Austin Powers. But the Bardock special was released 2 years before Goldmember.

Whatchoo talkin' 'bout? Tomatoes are a fruit.

And with Panbukin, I almost always call him Pumbkin. It makes more sense.

I am not bothered by the name changes much, it's not as if they are all characters in the series, just in the special, and Bardock kept his name so that's all that matters.

Ah yeah, and I could have sworn Tomatoes are actually fruits. They grown from a plant, and vegetables grow under the ground, most people just call them vegetables because they are eaten with other vegetables and salad and stuff. Just because another human states that they are officaily to be known as vegetables, the point remains, they only call them that because they are eaten with other vegetables.

Information on that wilkipedia isn't always correct.

Ok, Xyex was kidding. Also, wikipedia stated that it was a fruit. :P

Yeah, the point of my post was to point out that there's no definition for "vegetable", all vegetables are either fruits or roots or leaves. Cucumbers are fruits, potatoes are roots, lettuce is leaves.
