Shin Budokai's NA Cover...erm...yeah...(Bad Atari Covers)

Post by Chaos Saiyajin » Mon Feb 06, 2006 6:37 pm

 After just seeing Shin Budokai's NA cover on Daizex's main page, I've gotten the feeling that Atari's covers have been getting progressively worse since Budokai 2. Budokai had an awesome cover if you ask me, but 2's was just too busy, 3's sucked more than watching Alex Trebek have sex with a horse, and the American cover of Sparking! isn't winning any rewards either...

So what the hell is going on? Apparently Atari's trying to give out all the topless Goku fan service they can lately, I'm guessing to drawn in more female fans... Why must we see so much male nudity in DBZ? Give me J#18 anyday! If they must put a shirtless man on the front, put either Trunks or Gohan, that's what the women want! :P
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

While as a female fan I am amused/entertained by the shirtless Goku, I do agree that a cover more like that of the first Budoukai would be better-fitting for this game. Perhaps one that has some of the main heroes battling Janemba or something action movie-esque like that.

I get your point Chaos Saiyajin. Here's what I thought of Atari's covers:

Budokai 1:Kicked so much ass!

Budokai 2:Kind of okay...kind of.

Budokai 3:Meh.

Sparking!:Pretty good actually. But nothing compared to the Japanese cover.

Shin Budokai:That is so pathetic it makes me want to cry :(

And I agree that if they want to attract more female fans (like me) then they should put a shirtless Trunks or Gohan on the front.

As a guy, I personally have no problem with a shirtless Goku on the cover. Goku loses his shirt in pretty much every major battle anyway. It's just the context of the image that scares me. Goku appear naked. Unless you look real closely at the bottom you won't notice the top of his pants. What's weird is that even his arm band is covered by the Atari logo.

Whose eyes are those on top anyway. The cover would be ten times better if they removed the eyes, moved the logo to the top and raised the image of Goku so that we could see his full, clothed self.

Oh well its not like it matters anyway. I'm not going to buy a $300 piece of junk for one game anyway. 8)

Is there something wrong with us getting the Japanese covers? Why can't we? Some sort of licensing snafu?

And what does this county have with male-semi nudity? It reminds me of a debate with the old Mortal Kombat games; Sheeva, a (at the time) fugly Shokan (read: half-human, half-dragon, four-armed creature), who wore a skimpy one-piece bathing suit, was seen as sexist. Yet approximately 90% of the game's males were shirtless, including Goro and Kintaro, uber-buff members of the same race who only wore loincloths.

So why is a man wearing nearly nothing more acceptable than a woman?
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

The same reason it's "more wrong" to hit a girl, than to hit a guy.

Sexist! That's what it is. I believe in equality among the sexes! *Runs over and punches little sister*

And I think those are Broly's eyes.

Budokai 1's box-cover-art-thingie was the best; but, I don't mind the black background.
Even I became a loser when I made one of these...

That Amazon image better be a mock-up. If we're really getting that sorry excuse for a cover Atarti offically hates us.

The American one is alright but compared to the Japanese one, it does look that good. To me, the American cover looks like Atari chose a random picture of Goku to use, while for the Japanese one it looks like they took the time to draw an image specifically for it. In all honesty I hope the Japanese cover is used for the European one (I believe they've done that in the past).

Sweet! I'm guessing Broli's doing his ultimate attack in one of the screenshots. I think that it actually looks better than Budokai 3, but then again, the screens are pretty small...They're good nonetheless.

While I normally don't mind the presence of a shirtless male DBZ character, Goku looks like some kinda sleazy porn star on that cover. O_O

The Japanese cover is stunning, though!

Hmm... I never really felt any distaste for the American covers until I saw the rest of the worlds'.

Budokai - By far the U.K.'s version. The U.S.'s is pretty bad, although the Japan one is cool in its simplicity.
Budokai 2 - I like the U.S.'s quite a bit, although the German one is interesting with the orange background.
Budokai 3 - Japan's by far. Everyone else's just plain sucks.
Sparking! - Eh, the Japanese cover edges out ours just by a bit, to be honest. I really like ours for some reason.

I appreciate Kula taking the time to make that comparison shot for us. I personally like the following covers best:

Budokai - UK Gamecube
Budokai 2 - That German one is just badass
Budokai 3 - Japanese / USA Greatest Hits cover is the best by far
Tenkaichi Budokai - I honestly like the USA one the best.

Wow, I've never seen them side-by-side like that...
I think I like the japanese and US covers for Budoukai 1, and the UK cover for Budoukai 2 the best.

For some reason, Vegeta on the German Budokai 2 looks fat. 0_o

I like the background on the UK PS2 Budokai cover, except for the other random art.

I like all versions of the Budokai 2 art, I only like the two UK covers of Budokai 3.

And none of the art for Budokai Tenkaichi.

Gawd damn. That Japanese cover really is something else.

We need more like that, even if all it does is look nice on the shelf.

I'm interested to know what Goku and Vegeta are doing in the bottom left screenshot (in the image with 4 small ones). The movement looks suspiciously like Sparking!'s movement.
